I think it also needs another seam in the front,
doesn´t it? In my memory, most bodices have a
front side seam, similar to the one in the back
of the Butterick pattern. Am I wrong? I'd also
raise the neckline in the front and back, making
it less V-shaped, and perhaps make the bodice
pointed in front, like the green dress on the
January print. The pleated bertha goes better
with a pointed bodice, but then, I'm a big fan of pointed bodices...

Thanks for the help. I'm also wondering about
two small details on this pattern. It's designed
to close with hooks and eyes (wonder of wonders,
NOT a zipper) but I wonder if lacing might be
more appropriate to the time period (1840).
Also, the sleeves end with a slit (at least 3-4
inches) closed at the wrist with a button. I
feel that even if the slit is appropriate (and
I'm not sure it is), it's designed too long. (I
won't even bother to discuss the fact that the
skirt is too narrow - they simply didn't use enough petticoats on the model).

I appreciate all the input. I've had exactly the
right fabric for an 1840 dress for years, but
never found a pattern where I really liked the
sleeves AND the bodice. And I've been too lazy
to cobble pieces together from different
patterns. All this dress needs is a pelerine!

I don't know if this will help...
Nineteenth Century Fashion in Detail by Lucy Johnston, P.50 shows a 1827-29
Evening dress with similar skirt fullness as the Butterick's. The Evening
dress shape is the same as the drawing of the pattern and not the cone shape
in the picture. Through the book it appears that as you get into the 1838 -
40 the waistline starts to change to a V. On p.192 The Day dress 1837 has
a natural waistline and not so wide puff sleeves. You could lengthen the
gathered section down and add a 2 cuff to come close to the fullness of the
sleeves of the Day dress in the book.
The day dress does not have side back seams and appears to be closed by
hooks eyes in the back. There is a possibility that the Butterick model is
not wearing the appropriate undergarments. And yes the neckline dips a bit
low but I think that the neckline is suppose to be a bit more off the
shoulders which is perhaps why it looks to deep of a v.

I found the source the designer used for the pattern - it's in Nancy Bradford's
Costume in Detail, page 169 (at least that's the page number in my edition).
There is also a color photo of the dress on page 378.

It's that exact dress, right down to the slit at the bottom of the sleeve. But
it is also clearly a surplice front in both the drawing and the color photo. So
I've no idea why the designer decided on that bizarre asymmetrical bodice front
in the pattern. But the sleeves and everything else seem to be an exact copy of
the dress in Bradford.

I think the color plate may have gotten reversed because the surplice shows as
the left crossing over the right, rather that the right crossing over the left.
I don't know if I've ever seen a fashion plate of the period with the crossing
reversed like that.
