[h-cost] Period Hair, and Accessories

2013-07-31 Thread Simone Bryan
Yes one of my pet peeves is hair coverings, it is like a last thought but
it really is essential to get the proper look. Then there are the correct
or as close as you can get accessories that gives another note to the
whole. I cosider an outfit like a good perfume, it has lots of notes as to
bring forth a worthy scent. So the entire look does not stop at the gown
and underpinnings, although they are a good or great base.

2013-04-16 Thread Simone Bryan
Just wanted to mention, we had a workshop went very well!

We have Tasha Kelly to No Califormia, this past weekend, I have been
wanting to learn the self supporting gown for years, I missed the chance to
do a workshop with Robin Netherton awhile back, So I was over the moon that
I was able to be part of this workshop, we had a blast, food, intelligent
chat, and chocolate, oh! Cheese, who could not have a good day!!

We have been challenged to have our gowns done by SCA West Kingdom's
October Crown.

I just want to say? If you are ever hear about this? Please know it is an

[h-cost] What Am I Sewing?

2013-04-02 Thread Simone Bryan
I am in the design process for Eleanor di Toledo's Gown, I am finishing
Men's clothing for 1560's England/France. I pormised my husband some odd
years ago that I would work to make this garb spiffy, and then neglected
him woefully so I am now in the process of making all of the 1/2 done
things hanging about! LOL Once I am done he will have 6 complete outfits! I
had things all over the place once I collected them I was astounded at the
amount I had began and then lost or lost interest!

[h-cost] Sewing Machines

2013-04-02 Thread Simone Bryan
I have 5 machines now, my DDD from Viking, Viking 205 and Kenmore (my go
to), Janome if I have to fly somewhere, and a Brother XL-5600 I was given.
When the DDD known as Myst is embroidering I need to have a machine I can
still sew with. The Kenmore was a gift from my husband when my very
expensive Singer froze up and stopped working, when I was in the middle of
sewing a gown that was to be worn in less than 3 days...you know the drill!
I have used all manner of machines now from Yuki and Toyota to Brother and
White.

I think anyone who is looking for a machine is like an enagagement ring, to
each thier own! Try out the machines, Some you might not like as much as
others, I love ADORE my kenmore it works awesome! My Pfaff 7570 while
outdated could sew 8 think rolls of canvas and then smiled at me!

I am pondering how I can get the new Pfaff that is all PURPLE!!

Why to have so many? One is lightweight so it can fit in the airlines
perameters, another because it is an embroiderysewing machine that I do
most of my work on I can attest, Sometimes I have people over and it is
good to have more than 1 machine. There is always a need for if the machine
stops working, which has happened to myself, Sometimes I am working on 2
different kits and colors so one machine is set up for that and the other
for the other project.

It depends!

[h-cost] Embroidery Machines

2013-04-02 Thread Simone Bryan
You know? I owned the 7570, it was the best when it came out and then? They
did not innovate for many many years, then they were behind the other
makers. When I heard thae Pfaff might be going out of business back in
2001 or so? I was worried I would not have support, so I purchased my first
Viking. It was not until a couple of years later I found out that Pfaff
was actually bought by the parent comany of Viking. But now I am in deep
like I finally have doubles of each of the hoops, and since they are not
interchangable? I would have to devote more money to get more hoops for the
Pfaff.

However, when you are checking out the machines...Check out the Embroidery
Program because that is the real issue what you like about the program,
speak to the teachers who train and chat them up as well, and of course
play on the machines.

[h-cost] Fabrics Medieval vs Modern

2013-03-10 Thread Simone Bryan
I have been working on that here in the West Kingdom (Northern California)
for many years! I give a class and demonstration on such,
So what specific information are you looking for? Like what fibers are
still used and what materials?

For example, there was a fabric created from Stinging Nettle, we don't
currently have this material that I know ofbut you can use silk gauze
or organza and soft organza. There are many things when working to find
fabrics and fibers that mimic the Medieval look.

Then you need to look at your pocket book, because we can get fabrics that
are like medieval fabrics but they come at a cost, some as much as $86.00
or more per yard/meter!

So What it that you really want?

*De-Lurking for a bit, yes it's been a long time since I posted here*
 ?
 ?
 ?
 ?
 ?
I'm looking for help with creating a fabric swatch book geared to help me
understand what modern fabrics would be closer in look or feel to
recreating historical garments, especially in the medieval period, although
not exclusively.? Personally I do most of my costuming in the 14th century,
but am also asked to help with everything from early Norse or Rus to Tudor
and Elizabethan clothing, and am starting to play with Regency and
Victorian outfits.? I have a lot of books, but find it personally
challenging to translate the written word and pictures into how the fabric
looks and feels in my hand for myself, much less for other people.
 ?
 ?
 ?
Since I'm at a point now where I'm wanting to take the time to hand-sew my
ensembles, and?even considering hand embroidered badge motifs, I'd like to
be a bit more correct on the weights and weaves I'm using for the projects.
Especially since I've got a few pieces of wools that are lovely, but I
don't know if they are the right weight or style for what I want to do.?
For example, picking out what to do with 6 yards of a lovely ultramarine
blue angora blend?wool that feels like velvety plush on one side and the
other side looks like what I think is a twill (very fine diagonal lines),
the 5 yards of a muted blue-green that is lightweight, mostly smooth
feeling, with tightly woven threads or the 5 1/2 yards of heavier dark
purple (grape) wool that is more like the heavier coat wool.
 ?
I'm willing to pay for swatches and postage-please contact me off-list at
 celedraug AT gmail DOT com.
 ?
Thank you (and back to lurking),

[h-cost] Husqvarna Software and Machines

2012-10-31 Thread Simone Bryan
Just to put in the .02 again! I have owned my machines SE and Designer
Diamond and now DDD the Deluxe, for 16 years, I think all total. I work
currently with 5D but I have used 4D and 3D, I consider 5D to be a breeze
in making all sorts of designs, and I do think taking classes is always the
best route, I am lucky I have a wonderful person who is a dealer, and she
adores digitizing and so I am able to bring pieces I want to do and then we
work with them.

I make all sorts of things my Persona is 16th Century, so it has been
difficult to find Blackwork or geometric designs that mimic this period.
and I have been able to achieve them.

Bad part? People checking out my blackwork, which I created set up and then
stitched out via my Machine and having them tell me I could have done it by
hand. So I can do an entire Shift in under an Hour, and I will not be in
splints for the next 4 weeks with pain meds...I do this by machine because
I need to, but I digress.

I have not had an issue digitizing designs I did have issues with getting
to know how to Digitize. That is a learning curve but well worth it,
everytime I make someone's badge or I make emblems of office people are
very, very happy that I have this machine. I am doing some grape leaves
for a project for my Barony.

Again though? I suggest you play with all machines, as I said I am in love
with my Babylock Serger, It is fast and efficient and I am to take my
second class on Friday and I can't wait!! LOL Plus there are
sewing. Digitizing and Serger Clubs, to help you get better and meet others
who share your passion.

[h-cost] Embroidery Machines

2012-10-24 Thread Simone Bryan
I can tell you to first not look at price, and more what you want to do
with the machine, some have very small embroidery hoops, which means as a
new person it is difficult to move the fabric so that you get a clean
flowing embroidery.

With that said, I suggest you spend some time looking, at different
machines, go to Sewing Centers and try out the machines, see which ones
'speak' to you.

I don't regret spending the cash for my machine, and I just bought I hope
my last serger, because I listened to others tell me and I should have
bought the Babylock Serger in the beginning, now I am actually USING my
serger, while the others collected dust.

I use my embroidery machine every single day, for all sorts of things I am
making masks with lace programs right now, and they are Stunning.

So my advice? Take the time and do the research!!

Also this is a grand source for loads of designs, I love the Fleur De Lys
myself!

Now you will also find that the stabilizing and everything behind the
stitching is expensive and I work with this site a lot:
http://www.embstore.com/

Also?? If you have a design feature in your software play with it!! There
are many designs you can digitize yourself!

Good Luck

Well,

Moda is now out of print and QEWU has not been retired as yet, so I would
suggest you get Moda, and then save again for QEWU. So while I think you
would gain some great information with that book as well.

 Hi there,
Actually Moda is in both Italian and English (on the same page!! ). I love
QEWU. If you are just starting out in this field, then I think that is the
 book to start with.

Also QEWU has the great virtue of being in English. I believe Moda is
 still
only in Italian, which means great pictures but you may not always know
 what
  you're looking at.

All other things being equal, I would buy Elizabeth and save up for
Moda next time. Queen Elizabeth's Wardrobe has more of the wonderful
details about who made what and with what tools; it's more of a
snapshot of Elizabethan clothing industry, with an emphasis on Royal

I will be in England during that time! So I will be picking up the newest

it comes out November 3rd or 4th I think?
