[h-cost] 14th century men's coat?

2007-09-07 Thread KLH
I'm looking for examples of 14th century men's coats. I'm not particular
about the geographical area as long as it's European. Western European is
best, but eastern would be fine in a pinch too. Need to make a sleeved coat
for someone, but I want it documentable. Thanks for any suggestions...

RE: [h-cost] Re: h-costume Silk shops

Speaking of silk, I'm going to Thailand next month for a couple of weeks.
Should I bother to go silk shopping? Not sure how much better the prices
would be over Los Angeles...

Hi -

I'm going to be on the west coast (U.S.) next week and am determined to
visit at least one fabric store! So, in San Francisco or in the LA area,
if you could visit one fabric store where you could be assured of a
fantastic bargain on silk, where would it be?

For silk, I'm thinking taffetas, embroidered, etc., things generally
suited to 18th/early 19th century wear.

Thanks.

- Hope

Here is a review from a costumer who recently visited the LA
garment /fabric district. If you go there you won't be limited to
one because they are side to side for a few blocks. I certainly
hope that i am not stepping on any toes by shareing this. It was
posted on another list.

Hi Fabrics, Inc,
at 937 Maple Ave.
Los Angeles, CA 90015

Deja recommended this highly, and she was right on. It has fabrics on
roller-arms on the left, niches with more rollers of fabric on the
right, and rolls standing on end dividing what would be one aisle into
two. The silk (dupioni and other) is at the front, on the left roller
arms.

Fabrics Fabrics (DBA M. M. P., Inc),
at 403 E. 9th St.
Los Angeles, CA 90015

This shop was two shops wide, instead of long and narrow. The silk was
at the front, again with the chenille-accented designs. In the back
on the right side, they
also had a wall of medium weight linen in many lovely colors. These
were quoted at $6/yd (before dickering), and the white handkerchief
weight at $10/yd.

---
Next door is a 99-cent niche.
It has no storefront, just a banner proclaiming the price of all
goods; there was no front wall.
That's where I got the medium weight muslin, $10 for 10 yards.

---
Next door to that is L.A. Fred's Fabric, Inc, Drapery and Upholstery,
411 East 9th St.
Los Angeles, CA 90015

Definitely upscale fabrics. They say they are a silk specialist, and
their store bears them out. Not quite as crowded with fabric as the
others we went into. This is where I found the red silk I had to take
away with me. One person quoted $15, then later someone else quoted
$20.

RE: [h-cost] GFD and cleavage

2006-08-22 Thread KLH
If you take it in across the front, you will be pulling the side seams
forward and end up with them being wonky. Yes, that's a technical term :)

By taking it in under the arms you are pulling from both the front and the
back and thus keep the side seams in their proper position.

snippages

Once you have her breasts taped in place you can alter the cut of
the underarm seams until the fabric is flush with the skin. I do not
remember why I was taught to take in under the arms and not up
front. Robin? Do you have any ideas?

Sorry, I should have stated that if someone is really interested in what I'm
doing, I'll chat with them, but the reaction I posted is for those employees
who don't care and are asking in that bored tone of voice that means they're
only doing it because they have to.

As a part-time employee of Jo-anns, I know they tell us to ask
customers what they are making but I've never seen any salesperson at
my store ask rudely or be rude at all with a customer. I usually don't
ask the question unless I'm genuinely interested in what the customer
is making, which I often am, unless it's obvious she is into quilting,
since I have no interest in that.I see no reason for the customer
to act rudely to me when I ask but sometimes they do anyhow. Curt,
sarcastic comebacks are not called for in my opinion. Why do
salespeople have to be treated as if they are just cogs in the
corporate machine (even though I feel that way often)?

You shouldn't have to pay more than about a buck and a half per yard, even
at retail. In my opinion, $69 for 15 yards is a ripoff...

Basically the only things to avoid as far as visiting an SCA event would be
white belts, unadorned chains, spurs, and coronets/crowns/adorned circlets.
This would apply to both male and female visitors.

Just a note, you may get hassled if your Husband wears a plain gold
chain to an SCA event, in the SCA that is insignia reserved for
Knights.

Thank you for the warning. I think as we are foreign visitors, and
have been specially invited to the event as guests, we may well not
have a problem. However, I will check with my hostess.

RE: [h-cost] Cleaning fur

2006-03-23 Thread klh
Sort of...professional furriers will tumble the fur in a barrel filled with
some sort of media such as walnut shells or sawdust, that has been charged
with a cleaning solution. Then the media is vacuumed out of the fur, and the
fur is steamed and pressed between rollers that line up and fluff the hairs.

I don't know if simple cornmeal will do the trick. Worth a try I guess,
depending on how valuable the fur is.

My mom says you use cornmeal. Rub it into the fur, then brush out. Be sure
to go with the grain and be gentle. It's tedious. She says that is how
professional furriers do it.

A year or so ago, someone mentioned a modern name for a style of chain
necklace that looked similar to the longer one K of A wears in this
portrait:

Does anyone remember what that name was? The modern version wasn't exactly
like the one in the portrait, but it was definitely similar.
