Re: [h-cost] More black ruffs?
I just happened to borrow Strong's English Icon, so I thumbed through it looking for black ruffs. There aren't any all-black ruffs, but there are a few edged in black and a few more that are heavily embroidered with blackwork. I could only find three online: http://www.elizabethan-portraits.com/ThomasHoward1.jpg http://www.elizabethan-portraits.com/FrancisSidney.jpg http://www.uvm.edu/~hag/sca/tudor/blackmary.jpg If you'd like more pictures, email me privately and I'll see if I can get them scanned. [h-cost] Farthingale Calculator
Sorry for the cross-posting, however, for anyone interested, I have updated the Farthingale Calculator to allow you to choose the number of boning rows. Additionally, the calculator has moved. To access it, please go to http://www.margaretroedesigns.com/tools.html. For anyone not familiar with the Farthingale Calculator, I set up a program to determine for you both the circumference of each row of boning and the length from the waist for each row for a farthingale. The length for the first row of boning will be twice the distance between any two rows, to allow the wearer to sit comfortably. Additionally, these calculations do not take in to account a bumroll, if worn under the farthingale. The program doesn't seem to work with certain versions of IE. However, for IE 7 users, there is a solution on the user end to make the program work. If you go to Tools, Internet Options, Security, Custom Level, and set Allow websites to prompt using scripted windows to enable, the program works just fine. Somehow, setting it to temporarily allow this doesn't cut it. Thanks and happy sewing! [h-cost] History of the Parasol
Hi all, I've recently written an article on the history of the parasol through the 16th and early 17th centuries. Over the last 4 or 5 years, reenactors and faire people have repeatedly told me parasols arent period. I've had the evidence to support their use for at least as long, but I finally decided to make a formal article about it. Although I am selling items elsewhere on this site, my goal with this article wasn't to sell more, but to provide reenactors with the evidence to dispel this particular myth. So, I invite anyone interested to have a look. You may check out the article at http://www.margaretroedesigns.com/parasolhist.html. I will be forwarding this article to several lists during the next few days, so I apologize if you receive this several times. I hope you all enjoy, Margaret Roe __ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam?
