Re: [h-cost] Ancient Egyptian beaded dress
For a stage costume, use drinking straws, cut into pieces. They would thread quickly onto string, (put two strings through a straw piece, then split the strings and put through another straw piece with strings on either side, if that makes sense) and you could put pre-made beaded fringe on the bottom for movement. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Sylvia Rognstad Sent: Friday, July 18, 2008 9:56 PM To: Historical Costume Subject: [h-cost] Ancient Egyptian beaded dress Speaking of such, has anyone ever come across any fabric that might work for a stage costume of this? Re: [h-cost] Ancient Egyptian beaded dress
Rather than regular plastic drinking straws, what about using the coffee stirrer type straws? They would be more of the size of the original beads. They could be cut, slit length-wise, painted with plastic friendly spray paint, and then put on the netting. I would suggest using a medium weight natural color linen as a straight sleeveless shift/tunic. Then do the bead net and fasten it down to the undershift. Re: [h-cost] Ancient Egyptian beaded dress
Think macrame for this one. The beads are on cord which is netted together to create the dress, NOT sewn onto a net fabric. Thus you need to make your beaded macrame shell and then line it with something solid (the linen shift). However, if you choose to applique the beads to clothe and then sew up the shift, DO NOT use net fabric. It won't be strong enough to support the weight of the beads. My first encounter with this dress was the article in KMR (a journal re Egyptian archaeology) which discussed the find and the reconstruction. IIRC, the hypothesis there was that this was worn over some form of a linen garment the style of which is presently unknown. Sylvia wrote: I had been thinking of crocheting, but I really don't want to have to macrame a dress either. That's why I asked if anyone had come across a netted fabric that would work. I know that nylon net is way too weak. Yes, my chief concern would be finding a way to attach or hang the beads that was *strong enough.* That many beads are going to be *very* heavy, and I'd be afraid that even sewing them onto linen fabric would not be strong enough. I would guess that the original beads were threaded onto the actual string from which the net was made. If you do find some fishnet (1 inch squares or something like that) I'd suggest threading the beads on something strong and also sewing them individually to the strings of the net (i.e. sew through each bead, not just over the string they are threaded on). Of course, if you aren't particularly looking for durability, this becomes less important and you do have more alternatives (many of which will be less work). I don't know whether Gillian Vogelsang-Eastwood's book on Pharaonic clothing addresses this type of garment, but that might be a good source to check. 0 Chris Laning | [EMAIL PROTECTED] + Davis, California http://paternoster-row.org - http://paternosters.blogspot.com ___ h-costume mailing list h-costume@mail.indra.com http://mail.indra.com/mailman/listinfo/h-costume
