Re: [h-cost] Number of machines
I have five, in total. I have two Viking basic machines, a Daisy and a 310 or 315. That one is over at the Consort's house for the sewing of his armor. I also have a Kenmore quilter's machine that was a gift from my mother*, her old avocado green metal Kenmore, with table, and an ancient electric with the brand name Stradivaro that scares me--it's very fast, and I don't think it understands can't sew through X. And I'm trying to acquire a treadle machine and cabinet from a friend. Not sure where I'm going to put that one, though, the sewing room is kind of full at the moment. Jen/pixel/Margaret *I'd said to my sister that I needed a sewing machine to sew tents, because my first Kenmore (has since been sold to a friend) really wasn't up to it. Then I bought the first Viking. At Xmas, Mom hands me a very large box and says You can open that and then I have to kill you. And she was very very confused when she offered to return the quilter's machine and I wrapped myself around it. How many sewing machines do you *have*, now? Only three... But you won't use them all... Yes I will. ___ h-costume mailing list h-costume@mail.indra.com http://mail.indra.com/mailman/listinfo/h-costume
Re: [h-cost] Number of machines
I collect vintage machines and often will pick up rescues and refurbish, date for awhile then pass them on to someone who needs a machine. I guess I love the old metal jobbers and they are so dependable. The older machines make me think of another time when everyone sewed. They are also in most cases visually elegant. I don't know why, I love them and they provoke a sense of nostalgia in me although I was born in the mid sixties and not the mid thirties. I use my more modern machines for most of my sewing but when I need a strong straight stitch, I get out my 201. I also have a Bernina I will travel with, a smaller Featherweight I take quilt classes with and some others I just use once in a while when I have multiple projects occurring and need a quick run-off without bothering my set-up. I also found out that many of the thrift stores just trash the machines--send them to the scrap yard and sell the cabinets. I don't want a world where these machines are no longer around so I hedge my bets and provide safe, clean, dry sanctuary. Some time ago, I underwent a purge and relocated several machine heads through freecycle. Kathy (Singers 400, 500, 15-91, 201, Bernina 810, Bernette 006D serger, and Janome 9000, CS-100.) Re: [h-cost] Number of machines
I only have four and they are collecting dust. Does collecting dust count? One modern machine is for sewing when I get time. A treadle that I bought to relearn how to use. I opted to use a treadle in home ec. instead of the modern machines. My old Kenmore was retired in 2006. I won't get rid of it for sentimental reasons. I have one electric machine from the 1920s that I have never used. It doesn't have an electric plug. It is more for decoration in my office. I thought of you all yesterday while going to yard sales. There were a lot of old Kenmores in cabinets. I thought about buying one, but knew I had no place to put them. I really don't want to start collecting.
