Re: [h-cost] RE: prices on e-Bay
But, then, a thing is only worth what a person is willing to pay for it, as the old adage goes. Ah, but then again, you have to find the person willing to pay a fair price too... eBay might not be the best place for that since typically, the people shopping there are the ones looking for a bargain... ___ h-costume mailing list h-costume@mail.indra.com http://mail.indra.com/mailman/listinfo/h-costume

I agree, but when you look at the quality of what is /generally/ on sale on eBay, not everyone is going to be able to spot the difference between a beautifully researched, exquisitely sewn garment and something a teenager in Germany (or a room full of badly paid women in any part of the world) is knocking out from cheapola fabric on their overlocker. Sad but very true. Don't even get me started on my latest client's ideas for her bridesmaids - "... but why can't you do crushed velvet capes for the same price as this person in Poland?" **shudder** Katherine, who thinks we need a qBay (q for quality perhaps?) for those who know the difference "A positive attitude may not solve all of your problems, but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effort" - Herm Albright ___ h-costume mailing list h-costume@mail.indra.com http://mail.indra.com/mailman/listinfo/h-costume

Last year I sold the late 18th century waistcoat I'd hand- embroidered -sewn. I originally listed it for $500CDN, which is what it was worth, easily, given it was a reproduction of one in the V&A, a wool-silk ground embroidered in silk and backed and lined with linen. Not even a bid. Did that several times. Then listed it for $175CDN thinking at least I might start a bidding war. Not a chance. Relisted twice and finally it sold to some lucky fellow in California who got it for $175CDN, no counter-bidding. What a steal! Doesn't even begin to cover my time. It took 45 hours just to embroider, and that doesn't take into account time to sew, the materials, nada. I was a fool. And I'll never do that again.
