Thanks, Andy - I will see the actor tomorrow and offer him your suggestion. I think it may be the perfect solution, since we are down to the wire with production. This actor is also a costumer, and he recently worked The Full Monty. He told me their tear-away trousers used lightweight velcro with whopper poppers at the stress points.
I also think trying to make a regulation pair of tight-whiteys stable enough to tear away for more than one performance is a much more tedious job than it's worth.
