Subject: [h-cost] References to silk ribbon embroidery for clothing in regency
tim...Dear Kathleen,
I would like the bib reference so I can inter-loan it at work.
Thanks.
SHaron.
The Kyoto book does show a gown (pp42/3) that I think comes close.?
It certainly has raised embroidery, some of which could be ribbon.?
Some of you might remember that Bjarne was working on this gown, the
last time we heard from him. In the same volume (pp180/1) there is a
reticule that also features similar ribbon embroidery. I also recall
that in In the Russian Style (Onnasis) there is at least one gown in
the Hermitage collection thas has some elaborate border work that looks
like ribbon manipulation.

I tried several years ago to document the use of silk ribbon embroidery in
Regency times and didn't have any luck. It may be that it originated in
the 18th c., then went out of fashion until later, although even the
assertion that it was popular in the 18th century was not well-documented. If
anyone has convincing evidence, I would love to see it.
