Yes, the mutation that gives resistance to malaria becomes sickle cell disease if both sides of your family have the mutation (I work with scientists who have worked on sickle cell research). A google search on 'murraine disease' came up with definitions of a highly infectious viral diseasewith a fever attacking cattle and sometimes sheep, so they still use the same term. RE: [h-cost] sweating sickness
Probably had something to do with the native people having an immunity---for example, if you carry the sickle cell anemia gene, but don't have the disease, it gives you increased resistance against a common African disease (might be malaria, but I don't remember offhand). -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Carol Mitchell Sent: Friday, January 11, 2008 4:36 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: [h-cost] sweating sickness One of the historical fiction novels I read year's ago mentioned that the disease had an uncanny ability to seek out Englishmen in other countries (diet, perhaps?) & also that it seemed to be associated with outbreaks of murrain in cattle.
