Re: [h-cost] Curious about headdress - Arabic?
Turbans are very easy to wrap once you get the right fabric for them, I use two different methods to wrap mine, and you can get a multitude of looks depending on how you twist the fabric as you wrap. I have two turbans, both are a very lightweight cotton (almost gauze) and the shortest one is two and a half meters long - it makes a very skimpy turban. I can see about getting some pictures to show you how I wrap them - folks ask me about this on a regular basis, so its something I should do anyway. :0) Visual is easier to figure out than descriptive I think... Date: Tue, 5 Aug 2008 19:04:59 -0700 I am watching a program on the Koran, and see several types of men's head dress. One with a white cloth and then a black rope circlet of two rounds. It looks like marine rope, but this seems unlikely. Anyone know anything about it? Also, there are some simple turban like head dress, both simply white and blackanyone know how to wrap them? Thanks to all who have responded and Sheridan I would really like to see your process. I remember vaguely reading the article in TI...have to look that up again. I wish I could have recorded and shown you which turban i was particularly interested in. It was white and it almost looked like the fabric had been pleated into neat rows around the head. The red and white, or black and white checkered scarves are called kaffiyeh. The rope bands that hold them in place are called agal. There are many ways to wear the keffiyeh, the color and they way it is wrapped often depend on the wearer's nationality or ethnic origin. They are only worn by men. The simplest way to wear one is to fold it in half to make a triangle, and drape it with the folded edge across the forehead. My father brought one home as a souvenier from working in Saudi Arabia many years ago. The plain black and plain white turbans are made from very long lengths of narrow woven cotton. My husband works with a man who wears one. He graciously allowed me to borrow one for a few days. The cotton was very thin, and I was told the way to wear it was to just start wrapping it around your head until you got it all covered. It was horrendously long, but I forget how many yards. I suppose if you grow up in that culture you learn some tricks to wrapping it so it looks nice. There was an interesting article in an issue of TI last year about how to wrap turbans, with pics.
