[Haifux] WireShark lecture - Some additional details.
Thank you for listening to me again. I hope I didn't bore some people too much. I include, below a list of very useful filters (display and capture). Note1: display filters can be changed on the fly even while capturing, if your machine is fast enough. (here fast depends greatly on WHAT is being captured. capture filters cannot be changed without stop and start. Note2: in the capture panel there is an option update packets in real time. If capturing very fast traffic fails, this can be disabled. I mentioned that real-time-display is a great option, but if all else fails, you can try without it. Note3: coloring rules can be saved. I strongly suggest to use coloring and to save the rules, it helps a lot to understand (at the begining). Look at the links I supplied last time (see below) - its worth it. Last note, and thanks to those who send me traces of their adsl or cables connection : Thank you all. I am going to miluim tomorrow, so, understand my silence. [Haifux] Idea for lecture: connecting to HOT / 012 without a router
I have several people interested in having Kubuntu installed on their computers, however, I will not do it unless I know how to connect them to the Internet first! I can bring my own cable modem, though I doubt that there is HOT service in Taub. Or, I can invite the group to hold a meeting at our home in Nesher, 5-10 minute walk (two minute drive) from the Technion. Just let me know what beers everyone likes beforehand. Seriously, connecting to the Internet without a router in Israel is a known hassle in Linux and the issue needs to be addressed. Our friends at Nezeq and the other ISPs are not making it easy for us, as they require use of Windows-only dialers and restrict access to the modem's built-in http control panels. Re: [Haifux] Idea for lecture: connecting to HOT / 012 without a router
When you connect non-VPNishly, you don't get the IP address from the modem, you get it from HOT's DHCP server. AFAIK it has segments of addresses allotted to it from the providers for such machines, in addition to the 172.x.x.x addresses it gives VPNing machines.
