Folks, FYI, this is the message I posted today to the SSDL mailing list. ___ Haifux mailing list Haifux@haifux.org http://hamakor.org.il/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/haifux
Re: [Haifux] Linux + Hebrew?
At the time i used Windows more regularly, I preferred, whenever possible to use the Hebrew version of the software, including Hebrew OS menus and application menus. This was not a coincidence. The localization of Windows was the best you can think of, and I think we should pay tribute to Microsoft for doing this. The situation is different with Linux: the Hebrew menus are confusing at best. They use inconsistent terminology, and, worse from my perspective, they feature embarrassing Hebrew mistakes and colloquialism. In using Linux in Hebrew, I find these do distracting that I loose focus. Likewise, the tools for preparing Hebrew documents are not as good as those offered by the Microsoft environment. Still, I think we should make the effort of producing preliminary Hebrew documentation for our students. There is plenty of English documentation out there, and there is no hope for us to compete with these - students can find the material in English if they wish to. The difficulty is that they not always have this initial motivation. Our Hebrew documentation should serve in bridging the gap. There was a Hebrew presentation that Shahar made on introducing Linux to students. I hope it will make it into the wiki soon. I also sent out to this list a document I made with 10 tips for beginners in Hebrew. I hope it was posted despite the ban on attachements. On Tue, Feb 3, 2009 at 10:46 AM, Shahar Dag d...@cs.technion.ac.il wrote: Hello I think that the standard behavior should be that all internal documents are in Hebrew (after all this is our language) and all international documents should be in English. I would add 2 useful commands: ls -at will show the files sorted by time. The newest will appear first. The second command that I highly recommend is for those who don't know which command to apply. A highly educative learning tool. For instance man -k directory will print all the commands related to directory that can be applied. A partially output of the above command is: mdel (1) - delete an MSDOS file mdeltree - recursively delete an MSDOS directory and its contents mdeltree (1) - recursively delete an MSDOS directory and its contents mdir (1) - display an MSDOS directory mdu (1) - display the amount of space occupied by an MSDOS directory mkdir(2) - create a directory mkdir(3p) - make a directory mkdirat (2) - create a directory relative to a directory file descriptor mkdtemp (3) - create a unique temporary directory mkfifoat (3) - make a FIFO (named pipe) relative to a directory file descriptor mkfontdir(1) - create an index of X font files in a directory mkfontdir(1x) - create an index of X font files in a directory mklost+found (8) - create a lost+found directory on a mounted Linux second extended file system mknod(3p) - make a directory, a special file, or a regular file rm (1p) - remove directory entries rmdir(2) - delete a directory rmdir(3p) - remove a directory It doesn't require root permissions. I strongly agree with Dotan here, Every single task a Linux user (user, not administrator) or even a programmer will ever want to do, he can do it using GUI alone. I believe that the perception that every Linux user needs to know how to use the command line if he wants to use Linux is an archaic perception that doesn't fit in with todays modern world and the modern Linux distributions available today. I know using the command line is faster and easier and more powerful and everything, I use it myself all the time, but for the windows user's point of view, this is a total contradiction to the user friendliness we try so hard to preach. I know it's hard, but it's something I believe we must do if we ever want the simple windows user to start using Linux. I mean, look at the Technion. I agree with you, but then you give a double standard. It's OK for them to have silk gloves when they use Windows but it's not OK when they use Linux. It's hard enough for them to start using a completely different operating system they have never heard of before after spending their entire life with windows. I don't think they need to be pushed into even deeper water right away. Why not make an Advanced section where all the command line stuff is and if the student wants to learn more he can do that there. I don't think we should force him to learn extra material which his curriculum does not require. As I see it, if the material is that important for the development of the student it should be added to the curriculum and learned in lectures just like all the other materials. Then all the students would have this extra knowledge and not just the tiny minority that actually agrees to hear and even try to use Linux. Just my 2 cents.. Dave. I believe that a 2 way approach should appear in this wiki. The faster way (e.g command line) and the 2nd way which is GUI. Most of the tasks mentioned here can be done via gui as well. We can give them a way to choose what they want. Advanced section as mentioned by Dave is fine. I believe that the perception that every Linux user needs to know how to use the command line if he wants to use Linux is an archaic perception that doesn't fit in with todays modern world and the modern Linux distributions available today. We try to show them how modern Linux is and how pretty Compiz Fusion is, and how KDE 4 is much prettier than windows 7http://www.zdnet.com.au/insight/software/soa/Is-it-Windows-7-or-KDE-4-/0,139023769,339294810,00.htm, but then we open a big ugly black screen that looks like DOS and start showing them all the l33t tricks we picked up in all the years we've been using Linux. These are computer science majors we are talking about, and we can't even convince them to use it! how will we ever be able to convince the regular folks? So please, pretty please, with a cherry on top, stick to GUI apps when you teach a windows user how to use Linux. Dave.
