[Hampshire] Computer-Related Charitable Work
Does anyone on the list get involved with any charity work related to computers? I have a few hours a week I could spare, want to do something rewarding, and since computers are my skill, was looking at doing something where those skills are useful - for example, PC recycling for computers sent to Africa, or getting old people online and giving them some basic tuition. You could consider www.it4communities.org.uk I contacted them a couple of years ago, and nearly did some web design for a charity, but the charity kept changing their mind and generally dithering, so I gave up. It seems like a good idea in principle though. cheers Chris -- Chris Dennis cgden...@btinternet.com Fordingbridge, Hampshire, UK -- Please post to: Hampshire@mailman.lug.org.uk Web Interface: https://mailman.lug.org.uk/mailman/listinfo/hampshire LUG URL: http://www.hantslug.org.uk --

A lot of the smaller rescues get ripped off by IT/WSP providers who see them as easy marks. A lot of dog rescues still have static web sites but could really use a simple to use CMS. Another friend who is non technical is getting involved in re-branding rescue web sites in order to build up a portfolio of design work. Even somethign as simple as configuring email and doing a bit of smartphone shortcut training/config can help so much. I'm surprised no one has mentioned Jamie's Computers yet, http://www.jamies.org.uk/ lifted directly from their website: Jamie's Computers is the computer recycling social enterprise arm of The Society of St James; Southampton's largest homeless charity, providing housing, care and support to homeless and vulnerable people. In the past the LUG has held meetings at their warehouse/offices and last I heard they were very keen to recruit extra volunteers from the LUG. Excuse the thread hi-jacking... On Thu, 23 Jun 2011, Jacqui Caren-home wrote: A lot of dog rescues still have static web sites but could really use a simple to use CMS. Do you have a favourite CMS to use for such things? I want to convert a small (not computer related) static website to a CMS of some kind, but I want something that is both easy for me to maintain and easy to use/update by people who aren't computer experts. It doesn't need much in the way of bells and whistles and things like Drupal just have too steep a learning curve. I've played around with LightNEasy which isn't bad but I'd be interested to know what other light weight/easy to use CMS systems people recommend. Re: [Hampshire] confused ssh newbie
Can you ssh -p from another computer/device on your LAN? (You may need to use your internal IP address to do so.) If so then you at least know SSH is working. If not, then I'd use netcat. is an unprivileged port (1024) so if you shut down sshd you should be able to run nc -v -l -p on the server. Then from another computer/device run nc -v [your ip] Anything you type into one should show up on the other after pressing return (netcat is line buffered). If it doesn't then the debugging info netcat outputs may be useful in diagnosing your issue. What is the output of the following command with sshd running? sudo netstat -pant Kind regards, Benjie. What shell script ? I've not seen it mentioned before ? Is it not handling the ssh parameters correctly ? yes.. sorry Bob :( I guess I got myself muddled. The latest error is what I get after I change the port in ssh_config and the port forwarding in the router. Using the shh -p testermike@.. is the above the correct syntax for a non standard port? The answer to your other question is no (i think:) the server did have guard dog running but I thought it was disabled. I will check. That said wouldn't it block the successful port 22 logins as well? The only other firewall is the NAT functionality in the linksys router. Again that lets port 22 through. Re: [Hampshire] Wireless repeater / bridge
At 19:46 24/04/2011, you wrote: ... it's time to build some wireless access points / repeaters! I have a few laptops kicking about, with wireless cards, so I figured I could dot these about and build a wireless network that way! Stephen, Another approach to extend wireless coverage is to use Wireless Access points. I gave up with Netgear Wireless Extenders and now use Belkin F5D7132UK Wireless Access Points that also double as Range Extenders. Using Powerline Network adapters I can place these WAPS wherever I have a power outlet and set up a Wireless Access point. Unlike Range Extenders, I can use different SSIDs for each WAP - I have three. While discussing Powerline Adapters - I use Devolo - you can add a switch to each adapter to increase the number of wired devices - I have 13. You will read that the Powerline Adapters cannot be used with power extension leads. However, all of mine do so but they will not work via a surge protector. To recap, each of my WAPs connects to a Powerline Adapter via a switch. I have two 5 port and one 8 port switches. Novatech sell a 5 port switch for around £11. One of the WAPs is connected to a 1 watt amplifier and external aerial to give me coverage accross the marina where I live. For good measure, I have a Janus High Power 802.11 b/g/n USB Adapter. This works out of the box with the latest Linux kernel (unlike Windoze) and gives extended range and signal strength when plugged into my notebook or netbook. Were did you pick up the janus i got nothing with a search in froogle.co.uk One result on ebay only. What power is the adaptor? I got one of the Alfa data WiFi antennaes but its limited in the uk to either 100mw 500mw depending on what you read. This is in the windows driver which is all i have installed on an old Thinkpad x30 The problem is the connection is marginal and so i would like to have a high powered adaptor for problematic connections. I tried googling it but it seems no one know a work around apart from buying from china and importing it to the uk.
