However, it's pretty much guaranteed that anything will annoy someone somewhere. and there is an ongoing effort by companies to lower salaries by making it a commodity job. Some companies will pay the lowest rate they can. That's usually reflected in the quality of their staff and hence their business. and don't be so naive to suggest that people of the future will need more computing skills, if anything computing skills will be required less as tooling and AI becomes more sophisticated and automated. 10 years from now we will simply ask a machine to write software for us and only a very small number of people will be in a position to modify that base code. Rubbish. There was an AI program released in the early 80s called The Last One, so named because it would be the last program one would need to buy (it created programs for you). It wasn't. Even if AI advances to the level you suggest within ten years (it won't), why would anyone ask an AI system to write a program? Programs are a means to and end (for most people); it would be more likely that someone would ask such an AI system to ensure that the car is serviced overnight rather than to write a program to ensure it is serviced overnight. As for the quality of AI in ten years' time: speech recognition is an amazingly hard problem to crack, although the last thirty years has seen some modest progress. Having a system *understand* speech is a long way off. Look at how poor computerised translation programs are: the problem is that they don't understand what is being said. They merely use a (complex) algorithm to swap one language for another. The cat is black may be easy to translate into Le chat est noir, but it will be some time before I'm going to stretch my legs becomes Je vais pour une promenade (unless each such phrase is individually coded, but still the AI system doesn't *understand*). Google runs on Linux; Amazon runs on Linux; there is considerable pressure from Government for more Public Sector Linux adoption. It isn't going away any time soon. The majority of my thoughts are saying focus on learning Linux starting with Linux+ with the eventual aim of going for the RHCSE. Why do you want Linux qualifications? It's a serious question. If the company you have decided you want to work for has said they'll only consider those with an appropriate Linux qualification, fair enough - but I suspect you haven't chosen who you want to work for. So start with that. Research the kinds of companies you want to work for. Contact them. Convince them that you are utterly determined to work with Linux, but you currently lack experience and qualifications, and ask their advice. If you can, arrange an informal chat with a manager there. Ask if you can do a week's work experience there. When you know what is required to get the job you want with the company you want, pursue that. I would say that I enjoy Linux more Then don't work with Windows. If you do nothing else, do work that you love. So how did you guys learn Linux? By using it. By setting myself challenges, and solving them. By improving some of the documentation. By breaking it and fixing it. Has anyone else made the transition from Windows? Yes. Sent from my iPhone Not that dedicated to Linux then, are you? First job, then: find out how to stop your iPhone telling everyone you're using one. I'm serious. We get people applying for jobs, and sending CVs in in Word format. Don't impose a more technical solution upon them unless it meets a need they have, and they will be able to support it (or pay someone to). Suggestions: if you go ahead, this is reasonably straightforward to do for those versions of Windows that support logging in via a domain (there are always, it seems, some derivatives of each version of Windows that don't support this). Again, if not all versions of Windows that the client has will support domain logins, do they really want it at all? One way to find out is to ask if they will pay to upgrade those more restrictive versions of Windows. General derision: your first paragraph would be improved with some punctuation. You might know what you're trying to say, but it's your readers who need to understand it. The product is Windows, not windoze. What I would caution, though, is this: before following any advice, either from me or anyone else, make sure you either a) understand what the advice is telling you to do or b) are prepared to lose all your data, system configuration, etc. -- You can have everything in life you want if you help enough other people get what they want - Zig Ziglar.
