This isn't Microsoft we're talking about. The Debian Bullseye release

There's no need to wait from a stability perspective.

Focus follows mouse depends on the window manager. I'm running XFCE, and
there it's Settings, Window Manager, Focus tab, select "focus follows
mouse". I haven't used any other desktop environment for probably over a
decade, but if you're not using XFCE then a Google search will probably

You may already realise this, but any Linux distro can do all of those.
Konqueror is the only one even vaguely related to KDE, and it

Install the debian-security-support package from the version you want LTS
for, and then run 'check-support-status'. That will tell you whether you
have any packages installed that will not be supported by LTS.

Given that Debian supports in-place upgrades, and that they work very
well, I'd be inclined to not bother with LTS and just keep the system up
to date, but I recognise that others may feel differently.

I don't think that's ever been the recommended way (at least since Woody).

Mike, suggestion: edit sources.list and put in the squeeze repositories.
Remove (or move) any /etc/apt/preferences file, and any files
in /etc/apt/preferences.d or /etc/apt/sources.d

Run:

 - apt-get update
 - dpkg --audit

If you get any output from the second command, fix it before proceeding.
Then:

 - apt-get upgrade
 - apt-get dist-upgrade

Repeat all of the above for wheezy, and then again for jessie.

So long as you have no pinning (hence remove preferences file), your
system will not be downgraded.

The above is by no means foolproof; in fact, from where you're starting
from, you probably will have some issues. It will be hard for someone to
support you via email for some of the issues you may encounter.

Keith

Correction: it may nark SOME of the group you identify. However, it's
pretty much guaranteed that anything will annoy someone somewhere.

and there is an ongoing effort by
companies to lower salaries by making it a commodity job.

Some companies will pay the lowest rate they can. That's usually reflected
in the quality of their staff and hence their business.

and don't be so naive to suggest that people of the future will need
more computing skills, if anything computing skills will be required
less as tooling and AI becomes more sophisticated and automated. 10
years from now we will simply ask a machine to write software for us and
only a very small number of people will be in a position to modify that
 base code.

Rubbish. There was an AI program released in the early 80s called The
Last One, so named because it would be the last program one would need to
buy (it created programs for you). It wasn't. Even if AI advances to the
level you suggest within ten years (it won't), why would anyone ask an AI
system to write a program? Programs are a means to and end (for most
people); it would be more likely that someone would ask such an AI system
to ensure that the car is serviced overnight rather than to write a
program to ensure it is serviced overnight.

As for the quality of AI in ten years' time: speech recognition is an
amazingly hard problem to crack, although the last thirty years has seen
some modest progress. Having a system *understand* speech is a long way
off. Look at how poor computerised translation programs are: the problem
is that they don't understand what is being said. They merely use a
(complex) algorithm to swap one language for another. The cat is black
may be easy to translate into Le chat est noir, but it will be some time
before I'm going to stretch my legs becomes Je vais pour une promenade
(unless each such phrase is individually coded, but still the AI system
doesn't *understand*).

Why do you mostly start sentences with lower case letters?

Unstable doesn't receive security updates other than those the maintainer

Testing is a good compromise between stability and the latest versions of

have security updates as well.

Wanting security updates and the very latest versions of applications will

First question to ask them: When you did your last test restore from

Do you guys ever think there will be a day that Linux will be as popular
as Windows in the desktop market.

Does it matter? Google runs on Linux; Amazon runs on Linux; there is
considerable pressure from Government for more Public Sector Linux
adoption. It isn't going away any time soon.

The majority of my thoughts are saying focus on learning Linux starting
with Linux+ with the eventual aim of going for the RHCSE.

Why do you want Linux qualifications? It's a serious question. If the
company you have decided you want to work for has said they'll only
consider those with an appropriate Linux qualification, fair enough - but
I suspect you haven't chosen who you want to work for. So start with that.
Research the kinds of companies you want to work for. Contact them.
Convince them that you are utterly determined to work with Linux, but you
currently lack experience and qualifications, and ask their advice. If you
can, arrange an informal chat with a manager there. Ask if you can do a
week's work experience there. When you know what is required to get the
job you want with the company you want, pursue that.

I would say that I enjoy Linux more

Then don't work with Windows. If you do nothing else, do work that you
love.

So how did you guys learn Linux?

By using it. By setting myself challenges, and solving them. By improving
some of the documentation. By breaking it and fixing it.

Has anyone else made the transition from Windows?

Yes.

 Sent from my iPhone

Not that dedicated to Linux then, are you? First job, then: find out how
to stop your iPhone telling everyone you're using one. I'm serious. We get
people applying for jobs, and sending CVs in in Word format. That doesn't
(yet) automatically rule them out, but it tells us a lot about them before
we've even looked at the CV.

What's my best way forward from here? When I've swapped disks, can I use

Here's how I would do it (so best for me; not necessarily best for

Put both disks in system. Boot from favourite rescue CD. Assume /dev/sda
is your failing disk and /dev/sdb is the new one. Be CERTAIN of this
otherwise you'll lose data.

# Replicate the partition table:
sfdisk -d /dev/sda|sfdisk /dev/sdb

# Make the filesystems on the new disk:
for a in 1 3;do mke2fs -t ext4 /dev/sdb$a;done

# Make the swap partition:
mkswap /dev/sdb5

# Create two mount points:
mkdir /to /from

# Mount the first pair of partitions
mount -r /dev/sda1 /from
mount /dev/sdb1 /to

# Copy, preserving metadata
tar -C /from -cf -|tar -C /to -xvf -

# Unmount
umount /to /from

# Repeat above to copy all data partition (just root and home in your case)

Shut down, remove old disk, leave new disk, boot rescue CD and write boot
block. Lots of ways of doing that, some of which are distro-dependent and
they will vary depending on whether you're using lilo, grub 1 or grub 2.
If you need specific instructions, shout.

On the contrary, one can easily have two DHCP servers or routers on the
same subnet at the same time.

It is advisable for the two DHCP servers to be allocated non-conflicting
_ranges_, but they can be in the same subnet. With most DHCP servers, it
isn't even necessary to have non-conflicting ranges as the DHCP will check
the network for the presence of the proposed address before offering it,
but I wouldn't bet that the DHCP server in embedded devices does that.

Two routers will often be used, although there should be only one default
gateway.

Thoughts: ensure that what you would like to do meets with what the client
wants. Don't impose a more technical solution upon them unless it meets a
need they have, and they will be able to support it (or pay someone to).

Suggestions: if you go ahead, this is reasonably straightforward to do for
those versions of Windows that support logging in via a domain (there are
always, it seems, some derivatives of each version of Windows that don't
support this). Again, if not all versions of Windows that the client has
will support domain logins, do they really want it at all? One way to find
out is to ask if they will pay to upgrade those more restrictive versions
of Windows.

General derision: your first paragraph would be improved with some
punctuation. You might know what you're trying to say, but it's your
readers who need to understand it. The product is Windows, not
windoze. God, if you must refer to him, is a proper noun and is thus
afforded a capital letter.

I hope the thoughts and suggestions are useful.

Is there anything i can do to roll back to my earlier version please?

Restore from the backup you made before upgrading? [:-)]

I don't know how comfortable you are with the command line, but in essence
what it worth trying is:

- boot from a standalone CD (I favour
  http://www.sysresccd.org/SystemRescueCd_Homepage)

- create a mountpoint for your ex-system

- mount the root filesystem, and /var if separate (and you may need
others, too, particularly /proc, which will need to be bind-mounted)

- chroot into the old system

- install the correct kernel

If you're not familiar with messing with the command line, the above may
not make much sense, in which case say so (but also, if that's the case,
reinstallation from scratch may be the quickest way - if that's the case,
you may want to use the system rescue CD to backup /etc and any user data
first).

What I would caution, though, is this: before following any advice, either
from me or anyone else, make sure you either a) understand what the advice
is telling you to do or b) are prepared to lose all your data, system
configuration, etc.

If you want backup I think you're better off having a normal
backup from one set of disks in the computer to the other set (in the

That means that if your computer is stolen, has a disk controller run
amok, or (unlikely) catches fire, you'll lose your original data as well
as your backups. If your backups are important to you, they should be
isolated, ideally geographically, from the source data. If they're not

 my Debian installation

What are the contents of:

/etc/debian_version

and

/etc/apt/sources.list

Do you have any files in /etc/apt/sources.d? If so, what are their
contents?

Re: [Hampshire] Ctrl-Alt-F* doesn't work - what to check?

I'm finally trying to get round
 to sorting out my server.

What's it running?

I'm sure last time I used the server I could
 get to a text-console by pressing Ctrl-Alt-F* - F1, F2 etc, and then
back to the GUI by using Ctrl-Alt-F7. However, I can't seem to do that
 anymore.

What happens when you try?
