[HCDX] MW Logs from this morning

2005-01-02 Thread aurel chiochiu
Hello to all of you !

Despite getting to bed after mid-night last night, I had a nightmare that made
me anxious and made me wake up a little bit after 4:00 AM. It's the first time
I really intensively DXed in months. I got a new one: CHOK in Sarnia over the
CBA pest along with tentative KNX (wich I never heard); this indicates I should
do much more listening before sunrise than I used to do. Here are the logs.
After I sent it, I'll go back to DX for a couple of hours, until the last
skywave signals fade out on the AM band.

530 TURKS AND CAICOS, Radio Vision Cristiana, Caicos JAN 2 1018 - Still
excellent with Spanish gospel music and man announcer. (Chiochiu-QC)

670 CUBA, CMQ, Radio Rebelde, Arroyo Arrenas JAN 2 1021 - Son music at
poor-fair level, // 5025 (fair-good) and 600. (Chiochiu-QC)

1070 CANADA, CHOK, Sarnia, Ont JAN 2 0606 EST - Good end of a 70's mid-tempo
song with some synthesizer, then promo for the morning team on ...information
station, CHOK. Very good signal with not even the faintest trace of CBA for a
minute or so, then CBA did come-back until about 0613 when both stations faded
down ! (Chiochiu-QC)

1070 USA, KNX, Los Angeles, CA JAN 2 0613 - Woman with nx and woman on the
phone; very weak signal, too weak to understand. Equal level with CBA and CHOK
wich both faded down. (Chiochiu-QC)

I'm back to the dials !
73 and good DX,
Bogdan
Equipment: Sanyo MCD-S830 with internal ferrite bar antenna

[HCDX] Switzerland for the outside world (will the internet replace shortwave radio)

2005-01-02 Thread Mike Terry
swissinfo January 2, 2005

Interview with Beat Witschi who became director of swissinfo on January 1,
swissinfo's new director, Beat Witschi, says the internet has the potential
to revolutionise the media and how we access information.

For swissinfo itself, his priorities are to provide more information and
services to the Swiss living abroad, and to better integrate swissinfo's
website into the Swiss Broadcasting Corporation's multimedia operations.

swissinfo: You became director of swissinfo on January 1. How do you see
your role?

Beat Witschi: I helped to create the web platform, swissinfo, which went
online in 1999. Before that we were a shortwave [radio] service.

Now the Swiss Broadcasting Corporation (SBC) - of which we are a part - is
in the process of defining a multimedia strategy for the entire corporation.

swissinfo must play an important role in that strategy. We have an
additional mandate to provide a service to the Swiss living abroad. And so I
want to be sure that the SBC is aware of our role, and that we can assist
the corporation in developing this strategy.

swissinfo: How prepared are you for your new role?

B.W.: I was fortunate enough to work in multimedia when I worked abroad, and
I am bringing this knowledge to bear in my role at swissinfo/Swiss Radio
International.

I also know swissinfo/Swiss Radio International very well because I worked
here for many years as a radio journalist.

The political authorities and the SBC will ultimately decide whether and in
what form we should continue.

swissinfo: What do you intend to change as director of swissinfo?

B.W.: We will certainly try to do more to integrate swissinfo into the SBC.
To that end, we need to develop both the quality and the content of our
nine-language web platform. We need to expand our platform, and to make it
more attractive and better overall.

We also have to offer more to the Swiss abroad in terms of services, and for
this the internet is an excellent medium.

swissinfo: Do you have any concrete objectives for this year and beyond?

B.W.: The focus over the next 12 months is to improve the website. Two years
ago we upgraded all nine language sites, but there is still work to be done
to make swissinfo more interactive, faster and to expand our content.

The medium term will depend on the SBC, which has to decide to what extent
we should be integrated into the corporation.

swissinfo: You mentioned multimedia strategy. Do you think swissinfo will
still exist in its current form three years from now?

B.W.: The website will certainly still exist. I don't know whether we will
have nine languages, but I hope so. This is largely a decision for the
political authorities.

In my opinion, swissinfo is very well positioned. We are cost- efficient and
flexible, we have a good journalistic product, and we use a medium that is
accessible across the world. In general, I am very optimistic that we will
still be here in a few years' time.

We have to look at Switzerland through the eyes of someone living abroad.

swissinfo: Competition from within the SBC and from private operators is
growing. How is swissinfo positioned against competitors?

B.W.: We are answerable both to the political authorities, who want a
service for the Swiss abroad, and to the SBC, which provides funding for us.
Both will ultimately decide whether and in what form we should continue to
operate.

Ideally swissinfo would complement the SBC's existing multimedia offering.
This is what discussions are focused on at the moment.

We want to offer as much content as possible, but we can't do it all
ourselves because we don't have the resources. So we are focused on finding
creative ways to work together [with the SBC].

swissinfo: What makes swissinfo different from other online media in
Switzerland?

B.W.: We provide perspective from abroad, while the domestic Swiss media
serve primarily a local audience, which means their focus tends to be
regional [ie: on German-, French- or Italian-speaking Switzerland].

We have to offer more - namely a national overview. And our journalists have
to look at Switzerland through the eyes of someone living abroad.

They have to decide which are the most important issues, trends and
developments behind the daily headlines. This is our niche, our strength and
also our mandate.

swissinfo: Last October, swissinfo/SRI ceased all radio broadcasts. Where
does that leave the Swiss living abroad who do not have internet access?

B.W.: Naturally it would be ideal if we could communicate through a range of
media - radio, television, internet and mobile phones. But for financial
reasons, we had to decide which medium worked best for us, and that was the
internet.

The advantage is that we can offer much more content than previously. The
drawback is that not everyone has internet access. I think we made the right
decision under the circumstances. With this medium we can offer the best
service to both Swiss living abroad and also to an

[HCDX] needed help for Mexican MW DX

2005-01-02 Thread aurel chiochiu
Hello !

I ended up the DX session shortly before 8 AM, then went to bed until nearly 11
AM. The assumed KNX signal didn't come-back for a positive ID and both CBA and
CHOK were weaker when I went back to DX around 6:20 AM. I got WLLH on 1400
often very strongly and sometimes all alone with El Ritmo program of
Reagge-ton and salsa music, as the only interesting catche.

Just before, I went back to the DX, I checked up the Net and found out that
Barry McLarnon in Ottawa had Tropicana 540 a few weeks ago during an Auroral
evening. I'm so jealus ! I'm really obsessed by his catche. And I always
thought Radio Tropicana on 540 is the best bet for Ecuador in eastern North
America. I was right. I'm so sad I didn't had the idea on November 18 when he
got it, to put the radio high enough to escape from the noise like I did since
a few days ago. I'd really wanted to get it. On the other hand, I had taped an
unID Latin on 760 kHz back in November 2002 with a very weak signal that did
last only around 2 minutes and wich even though I didn't IDed, must have been a
South American not from Venezuela or Colombia; I'm happy I taped such an exotic
station and that my Sanyo MCD-S830 is capable of hunting such weak AM aignals
with just the ferrite bar antenna. Of course, the most important of all is to
be in the right place at the right time. Henrik Klemetz and José Elias Diaz
tried to help me, but couldn't narrow down the station. At that time RCN
Barranquilla, wich used to be a pest was running lower power and wasn't present
at all that evening. By the way I haven't IDed RCN on 760 at all this season. I
wasn't very active, but they were supposed to have a decent signal even in
not-so-good-conditions.

Well, let's get now to the main purpose of this e-mail: what are the best bets
for hearing Mexican stations in Montreal, other than XEWA-540 and XEW-900 wich
I used to get from time to time ? We have a new local station on 1570 since
about an year, so XERF wich was recently reported on several occasions in
eastern North America becomes impossible for me. By the way 1570 is so close to
me, it even splash into 1540 WPTR wich is virtually local-like here in
Pierrefonds-Est; their tx is in Chomédy, Laval, a few kilometers north of me.
So are XEX-730 and XEQ-940 and a few others wich share their frequencies with
local pests such as CKAC. What other channels should I try ? What XEs are good
beats, even in non-auroral condx like we have right now ?

Thank you very much for help !
73, good DX and Happy New Year,
Bogdan in Pierrefonds - Est (Montreal's West Island), QC ---[Start

For some reason or other, KATQ-1070, Plentywood, Montana at 5 kw; normally
daytime only, is still on at 0400 UTC. CW music with slight over-modulation
and really, REALLY bad continuity. Very few ID's. Way over KNX, which is
normally dominant here in Helena.
