Re: [HCDX] XEPE-1700 address

2008-03-02 Thread Terry Palmersheim, KC7LDP
I was expecting this as I have been trying to QSL this station since they went
on the air; either as XEKTT or XETE (I was never sure of their call-letters). I
did a Google search for 'XEPE QSL' and came up with this:
http://finndxer.wordpress.com/2006/11/27/update-on-xepe-1700-reception-report-address/

The bcradio.com web site does not exist and e-mail to the same bounced. So, I
just bit the bullet and used their address given on their website:
http://www.cash1700.com/pages/inner

but addressed it:

3655 Nobel Drive #470
San Diego, CA 92122
Att: Bill Lipis, CE

It seems to have worked! Good Luck!

[HCDX] Historia de Radio Serbia.

2008-03-02 Thread JOSE MIGUEL ROMERO ROMERO
La Historia de Nuestra Radio

http://glassrbije.org/S/index.php?option=com_contenttask=blogcategoryid=21Itemid=46

albanes, griego, italiano, hungaro y chino.
Gracias a ello, Radio Serbia Internacional

[HCDX] Glenn Hauser logs March 1-2

2008-03-02 Thread Glenn Hauser
** CANADA. 6160 with blues interview and music, no doubt CBC Radio One`s
Saturday Night Blues on PST feed from CKZU, 0705 UT Sunday March 2, a 2-hour
show starting at 0605. Odd thing was no trace at all of CKZN at this time,
unlike a few nights earlier when they were equally mixing (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX
LISTENING DIGEST)

** INDONESIA. VOI, 9526, active March 1 at 1357 check in Korean with Indonesian
accent, usual good signal. Also March 2 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** JAPAN [non]. I enjoy the haiku segment on World Interactive when I catch it
from NHK Warido Radio Japan --- and did so Sat March 1 at 1415 via Canada on
11705. Not the usual very strong signal, but adequate. Unfortunately, this
seems to have been the last monthly haiku spot, as toward the end it was
mentioned very casually in passing ``for the last time`` and they did not ask
for more listener input as they normally do. Well, of course, a month from now
it will be April, and R. Japan will have undergone yet more programming changes
and cuts with the new fiscal year. Let`s hope what little English programming
they had left after the cuts last October, will remain even without haiku,
which was something so distinctively Japanese. Sackville could not keep the
transmitter on long enough for us to hear when the day`s next English broadcast
would be, even tho it lasted until 1429:15* (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING
DIGEST)

** RUSSIA. Another check of 6020 on March 2. At 1355 under R. Australia,
typical long Russian tune-up tones with pauses. No hum audible. At 1357-1402 I
was – natch – monitoring 6074 so missed whatever was going on at hourtop on
6020 as RA was closing. At 1403, back to 6020 and did hear talk in unID
language, now with the hum. I could easily believe it is Telugu. At 1422 check
heard a Family Radio musical riff, as it was fading out, so now am pretty sure
it`s really longpath from Samara as scheduled during this hour.

Per http://www.gaisma.com/en/location/samara.html sunset at Samara today was
1820 local = 1420 UT, so quite late enough for 6020 to be propagating darkward.
In fact I was hearing it right at LSS (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** SPAIN. REE is still filling its ``DX program`` with music, and earlier in
the hour on UT Sundays: Radio Waves played two pieces of pop music somehow
related to radio --- I don`t remember the titles --- ending at 0032 UT March 2
on 6055, and I think was already going when I tuned in around 0020 (Glenn
Hauser, DX LISTNEING DIGEST)

** VENEZUELA [non]. All I had time for Sunday March 2 in checking Aló,
Presidente, was to find that at 1428, 13750 was VG // weak 13680 and 11670;
11875 underneath WEWN, not on 11680 again instead. Big open carrier on 17750,
probably WYFR instead. I heard later on BBC news that on this show, HCF
announced tanks positioned on Colombian border because he doesn`t like Colombia
hitting FARC across another border in Ecuador. Oh, boy (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX
LISTENING DIGEST)

UNIDENTIFIED. 6074, 8GAL: was listening closely for it March 1 at 1359 until
1403, but only trace of it for a few seconds was something chirpy which may
have been the CW transmitter malfunxioning. Meanwhile the Spanish 2-way SSB was
back on 6072. For second morning in a row, not audible with V/CQ CW marker when
checked between 1357 and 1402 March 2 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

[HCDX] AFrica: Radio, TV Channels Rapidly Increasing

2008-03-02 Thread Zacharias Liangas
Radio, TV Channels Rapidly Increasing

Biz-Community (Cape Town)
http://allafrica.com/stories/printable/200802290507.html
http://www.bizcommunity.com/Article/196/15/22465.html

NEWS
29 February 2008
Posted to the web 29 February 2008
Cape Town

A rapid increase in the number of radio and TV channels in Africa over the
last three years has piqued interest in the continent by international media
players. A recent report, African Broadcast and Film Markets, published
jointly by Balancing Act and InterMedia, has documented this growth.

The report - a detailed look at the state of broadcasting in 40 African
countries, including 17 in-country audience surveys - provides data and
insights broadcasters, advertisers and governments can use to find and
develop markets, increase their reach and strengthen their impact among
African audiences.

Explosion in number

The report finds that the liberalisation of radio broadcasting in many
countries has led to an explosion in the number of radio stations, particularly
those broadcasting in local languages. Known in East Africa as the
vernaculars, these stations have been a high growth area over the last five
years. The most vivid example of this trend is in Uganda, where there are
now more than 150 radio stations, 69% of which cater to audiences in the
country's 38 different languages.

Television broadcasting outlets have also increased steeply; out of 40
markets surveyed in sub-Saharan Africa, the report finds nearly half (18)
have licensed free-to-air TV channels.

African broadcasting is undergoing a period of major growth as more
countries are liberalising and increasing the number of channels, says
Russell Southwood, author of the report. The level of radio and television
ownership has kept pace, also increasing very rapidly. International media
players are paying close attention to the new opportunities that are opening
up.

Rise in radio listenership

The most striking trend in terms of audiences is the rise in radio
listenership.
There is a huge appetite for FM music radio; consumers also hunger for
entertainment television, says InterMedia analyst Hugh Hope-Stone.

Africans, both sub-Saharan and North African, surround themselves with
music in cars, public transportation, shops and homes. Wherever
deregulation has taken place, multiple FM channels have emerged. Growing
cable and satellite subscriber bases suggests more people are willing and
able to pay for services, he says.

Alongside this interest in music and entertainment television, African
listeners and viewers also hunger for news (see map below). However, the
report finds they tend to trust either the new private broadcasters or NGO-
run radio and TV stations for news more than they do government-run
broadcasters. This is particularly true in North African countries such as
Morocco, Tunisia, Algeria and Egypt, where channels like Al Jazeera attract
large audiences.

Additionally, the report finds that with the introduction of competition into
the
pay TV market, there are an increasing number of people with access to a
wider range of programmes than are currently available on terrestrial
television, particularly sports events, such as the UK Premiership and the
recent Africa Cup of Nations.

Further boost

These services are largely delivered by satellite, although there are now a
small number of IP-TV and cable operators. The majority of pay TV
subscribers are found in Africa's urban areas. This trend towards pay TV is
likely to receive a further boost when a number of operators introduce triple
play- a combination service that includes voice, internet and TV
programming services - later in the year.

The African Broadcast and Film Markets report also includes:

* an overview of the broadcast industry across the continent

* the impact of liberalisation versus state control

* the battle for pay-TV subscribers and potential market size

* the costs of local and international programming

* the digital switchover and high-definition

* the continent's mobile TV roll-out

It also has survey-based analyses of 17 countries: Algeria, Angola, Burundi,
Egypt, Ghana, Kenya, Morocco, Mozambique, Nigeria, Rwanda, Senegal,
South Africa, Tanzania, Togo, Tunisia, Uganda and Zimbabwe.
Details are available at www.balancingact-africa.com/publications.html and

[HCDX] The Shortwave Report 2/29/08 Listen Globally!

2008-03-02 Thread Zacharias Liangas
The Shortwave Report 2/29/08 Listen Globally!
by Dan Roberts
Thursday Feb 28th, 2008 4:49 PM

A weekly 30 minute review of news and opinion, recorded from a
shortwave radio. With times and freqs for listening at home. 2 files-
broadcast and slow-modem streaming. Free to rebroadcast. China,
Netherlands, Cuba, and Russia.

Dear Radio Friend,
The latest Shortwave Report (February 29) is up at the website
http://www.outfarpress.com/outfarpress/shortwave.shtml in both broadcast
quality (13.3MB) and quickdownload or streaming form (4.9MB) (28:59)

This week's show features stories from China Radio International, Radio
Netherlands, Radio Havana Cuba, and the Voice of Russia.
From CHINA- Raul Castro, Cuba's new President, said he will make the
economy stronger and the government more efficient. Sudan's Foreign
Minister thanked China for helping solve the Darfur issue. China has begun
work on the world's first third-generation nuclear power plant.
From NETHERLANDS- The US government has been working on selling
India fighter jets, nuclear fuel, and nuclear technology- the Indian Parliament
has serious reservations about making the deal. In Pakistan General
Musharaf's ruling political party was defeated in recent elections- while the
US government supports the General, human rights groups are working on
impeachment.
From CUBA- On Monday 10,000 Palestinians formed a human chain to
protest Israel's blockade of the Gaza Strip. On Tuesday, Israeli helicopter
gunships killed 7 Palestinians, pushing the death toll to over 200 since
November. 20 years after the worst oil spill in US history, Exxon is at the
Supreme Court appealing the ruling that it pay anything for the
environmental disaster it was responsible for. Cuba held a roundtable radio
broadcast on the topic of The Mass Media and Its Manipulations.
From RUSSIA- Russia restated its strong opposition to the unilateral
proclamation of Kosovo's independence. A commentary on why parts of
Europe fear Kosovo's action. Turkey is working on justifying its deadly
incursion into Iraq to kill off Kurdish rebel fighters- an action that the US
was

I was interviewed for an informative weekly radio show Mediageek, available
at http://radio.mediageek.net

All that plus times and frequencies for listening at home. It's free to
rebroadcast, please notify me if you're airing it and haven't notified me in
the
last month, please mention the website if you only air a portion. If you just
want to listen and have a slow connection, try the streaming version- lower
sound quality but good enough and way easier if you don't have a high-
speed internet connection. If streaming is a problem because of your slow
connection, download the smaller file- it takes 20 minutes or less, and will
play swell in any mp3 player application (RealPlayer, Winamp, Quicktime,
iTunes, etc) you have on your computer.
This program will be aired on Friday afternoon at 4:30pm (PST) on KZYX/Z
Philo CA, you might be able to stream via
There are several other streams that work better-
http://www.freakradio.org Freak Radio Santa Cruz now streams this
program on Friday at 9:00am and Monday at 5:30pm(PST)
The Shortwave Report may be downloaded as a podcast from
http://www.radio4all.net/podcast.php/.xml?series=outFarpress%20presents or
iTunes (search for shortwave in podcasts)
Check out the amazing streams at http://www.radicalradio.org
And Radio For Peace International at http://www.rfpi.org

I hope you'll listen and air this if you're connected with a radio station. I
am
still wondering how to get financially compensated for the 25 hours I put into
this program weekly- any ideas are appreciated. Any stations rebroadcasting
this (or listeners) are welcome to donate for production costs. You can do so
through the website. Many thanks to those that have donated! No Guilt!

[HCDX] SOMALIA: police once again closed Shabelle

2008-03-02 Thread Zacharias Liangas
Press statement Detention of our Shabelle director and ransack of our

Detention of our Shabelle director and ransack of our studio equipments.

Forces from the transitional government of Somalia have forcibly and
violently entered our premises in Mogadishu, whisking away our director
Mukhtar Mohamed Hiraabe under the barrels of guns while also taking some
our main studio equipments.

We condemn this barbaric attack staged on our radio station by some
forces of the transitional government and we call on the government leaders
firstly to assure the safety of our director, Mukhtar Mohamed Hiraabe and
his immediate and unconditional release says in a statement released by
Mr. Abdimaalik Yusuf Mohamud, Chairman of Shabelle Media Network.

Somalia's media is facing danger which will ultimately and surely silence the
freedom of speech in Somalia and the flow of information out the country if
the government doesn't respect the basics of democracy on which it was
formed adds the statement also calling on the government the return of the
equipment taken.

Shabelle Media and media houses in the capital have suffered enough
under deadly raids and shutdowns by the transitional government and many
professional journalists have fled the country after some journalists were
killed by the warring sides.

Somali troops raid three radio stations

By Aweys Yusuf

MOGADISHU (Reuters) - Somali forces closed down three radio stations
during raids in search of suspected Islamist insurgents on Sunday, the
stations' directors said.

Troops moved against the independent stations a day after a gunfight in
Mogadishu's central market between insurgents and government troops
backed by Ethiopian forces killed nine people.

Employees of Horn Afrik, Shabelle and Simba radios said troops took
computers, cameras and radio equipment.

Government troops entered the radio station and said we must stop
working. They said the radio station is closed from now on, Horn Afrik
cameraman Abdi Daqane told Reuters.

We are deeply sorry that Somali journalists are still under government
oppression, he added.

Shabelle radio's news editor, Abdi Ismail Abdi-ud, said the soldiers took two
computers and two sound mixing machines. They briefly detained the
station's acting director, Mukhtar Mohamed Hirabe.

They did not say we are closed but we cannot operate ... I believe the
government is still showing its heavy-handedness on the free media in
Somalia, he said.

It is silencing us because it does not want the radios to report that soldiers
are looting properties in Bakara market.

Simba, another independent station, had to shut down after government
troops seized computers and microphones.

A number of government soldiers penetrated the building of Simba radio,
harassing the reporters and taking three computers, three digital cameras
and the radio's mixer, Simba Radio deputy director Mohamed shiil Hassan
told Reuters.

They accused us of siding with and reporting the activities of the
insurgents, he added.

Somalia has been in chaos since warlords toppled dictator Mohamed Siad
Barre in 1991. The violence has worsened since Somali and Ethiopian
troops ousted Islamists from Mogadishu just over a year ago.

[HCDX] Status of WBIX QSLS

2008-03-02 Thread Jim Pogue
Dear fellow DXers -

Just a note to say that reception reports from the U.S., Canada and Europe
for the highly successful WBIX continue to arrive here via both postal and
E-mail. I have been out of town this past weekend, and will be gone most of
next week. As soon as I am back I will begin working through the growing
piles of reports and hope to start sending out QSLs shortly thereafter.

Thanks for your patience everyone.
