[HCDX] WNTP DX test barely heard in OK
** U S A [and non]. Tried for the postponed WNTP 990 Philadelphia DX test UT March 15, using DX-398 in the yard. Fortunately it had stopped raining a few hours earlier and things had dried off somewhat. First try around 0420 UT yielded nothing, nor expected with day pattern toward SE. Listened intently from 0450 to 0500 during the ND 12.5 kW portion. XET was not much of a problem, close to a right angle, and no sign of CBW, which can boom in when K-indices are low. SWPC says: The mid-latitude K-index at 0300 UTC on 15 March was 2 (18 nT). But aimed toward Philadelphia, there was still a pile of QRM, multiple subaudible heterodynes from all the other stations, almost like a graveyard. However, at 0451 I could hear an occasional tone, but never copy any Morse code ID. At times the tones seemed evenly spaced like a timesignal. Sweeps definitely heard peaking around 0454-0456. So I count this only on the basis of assuming no other station would be transmitting such material. Right at 0500 on came the Cuban National Anthem, from the SE, presumably R. Guamá, Pinar del Rio, as mentioned by Arnie Coro in DXLD 8-031, if that is the only Cuban on the frequency, but not noticed prior to that. No IBOC from KTOK-1000 audible, which wipes out 990 here in the daytime. No doubt those closer to Philly or with better equipment heard the WNTP test more definitely than I did. Many tnx to René Tetro for putting it on (Glenn Hauser, Enid, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST) Looking for last minute shopping deals? Find them fast with Yahoo! Re: [HCDX] Dxers Unlimited´s mid week edition for 11 -12 March 2008
Radio Havana Cuba Dxers Unlimited Dxers Unlimited´s mid week edition for 11-12 March 2008 By Arnie Coro Radio amateur CO2KK Hi amigos radioaficionados ... with our now traditional salute, we are saying hello to radio hobby enthusiasts around the world from sunny Havana, Cuba. I am Arnie Coro, radio amateur CO2KK, inviting youth to join me for about seventeen minutes of on the air and also on the web time, plus the now regular option of reading the scripts of this program by subscribing one of several Internet radio hobby mailing lists. Here is today's show first item...Another week of very little solar activity reported by scientists, who continue to wait for the expected increase in the number of sunspots from the new cycle. So far, the new sunspots are just missing, and the daily solar microwave flux continues to be at extremely low levels. Item two: Just a few days away from the spring equinox here in the Northern Hemisphere, and already we are seeing somewhat better propagation conditions especially just before sunrise and just after sunset local time. Item three: Cuban radio amateurs began the new training program during the weekend, at my local club, the Plaza Radio Club we had a very nice meeting and the group of newcomers to the hobby started to receive their lessons in electronics, rules and regulations, radio wave propagation and communications procedures. The training course is programmed to last until May and the radio amateur operator's tests will take place in June. The Radio Amateurs Academy as this program is known counts with experienced certified instructors selected among the nation's first class operators, the ones that are on the air with the CO, the Charlie Oscar prefix. Cuba has four prefixes for its stations registered at the ITU, that include CL, used or the beginner's license, the CM intermediate class amateurs , CO used for the first class licensees and the T4 prefix that is only assigned to special event stations. More about our wonderful radio hobby here in Cuba and in the world after a short break for station ID... I am Arnie Coro, radio amateur CO2KK in Havana...stay with us amigos... I will be back in a few seconds... .. Yes, you are listening to Radio Havana Cuba, and if the bad weather is keeping you at home, it's good time to start tuning around for new stations. Amateur radio operators that are stranded at home due to bad weather enjoy working DX when there is no other choice but to wait until the weather clears. And now there is yet another incentive to go on the air... the new Clipperton Island DX expedition is on the air, with high hopes of making a good showing as the just finished Ducie Island expedition achieved. Ham radio expeditions to put on the air remote places are a great incentive for Dxers and the dream of any devoted Dxers is always fixed at having the unique opportunity of taking part on one of the real prominent DX expedition. I remember way back in 1965, when a group of Cuban radio amateurs activated for the first time in many years the CO4, the Charlie Oscar 4 prefix , by putting on the air a station at a remote little island to the south east of the Isle of Youth, how a fascinating experience it was for the team , despite the many mosquitoes and one dangerous encounter with a big salt water alligator, a cayman, that enjoyed swimming swiftly between the small little islands , something we discovered many days after going out to swim at the beautiful deserted beach... We made a large number of two way radio contacts using CW and phone, but at that time we had no digital modes equipment and taking to the Avalos key location radioteletype equipment was not possible. Another nice way of enjoying group activities is to take part of a station participating on a ham radio contest, a very demanding activity that will require for you to take a Monday and possibly Tuesday break after the contest weekend!!! More than two and half million radio amateurs around the world enjoy communicating using their own equipment and antennas, sometimes from the most unique locations, like an Antarctic scientific expedition or the cockpit of an airliner cruising at thirty seven thousand feet, something that airline pilots that are also ham operators do more often than what you may think, because as a very good friend of mine that seats on the left hand seat of wide body jets likes to say... cruising at high altitudes over the world's oceans can be really boring, due to the high degree of automation of modern aircraft !!! Aeronautical mobile, from a glider or a wide body jet is equally enjoyable and is one of the more than 80 ways that people enjoy amateur radio!!! .. Yes amigos, we do QSL, we do verify well written and documented reception reports, something that is very easy to do, you will only need to send us an e-mail to arnie at rhc dot cu that includes the date, time, frequen

RA is still annoying us by cutting off the 5-minute Perspective commentary in the middle, such as Thursday March 13 at 1358 on 6020, over to Waltzing Matilda as frequency is about to close, with 5995, 6080 and 7240 coming up. This also happens on 9580 but I was not quick enough to retune to 9590 this time for the rest of the commentary, nor should anyone have to. What we do have to do is go here: http://www.abc.net.au/rn/perspective/default.htm and download the talx, or even read the transcripts. This is a M-F show, but it seems RA only runs it as an expendable filler at 1355 on UT Thursdays (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** CHAD. RNT, 4905, March 13 at 0602 had run music past hourtop, then announcement in non-French, perhaps Arabic but not sure of that. WRTH does not break down their `vernacular` schedule. Constant annoying CODAR (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** CUBA. Removing any doubt about whether Cuba would adopt DST to match Miami, March 13 at 1403, on 12000, RHC with timecheck for 9:03 = UT -5, not 4. This follows their frequency announcement always read live, and never completely correct. Echo once again heard on RHC 6000, March 14 at 0554, implying that two slightly unsynchronized transmitters are running here. Not constant, but when one of them faded a bit the echo could be heard. This and many other anomalies could be confirmed or denied, or explained by Arnie Coro, who surely sees my reports, but apparently does not want to get involved in a discussion with a non-sycophant of RHC who even dares to criticize Cuban jamming (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** GUATEMALA. My previous QSL report of R. Verdad, 4052.5v, has been slightly corrected and updated. If quoting it for publication, please take the latest version which will be in upcoming DXLD 8-034 (Glenn Hauser) ** NIGERIA. DST gets me to monitor 60m an hour earlier late at night, including 4770 FRCN Kaduna. March 13 at 0600 I noted that the 3+1 timesignal was 3 seconds slow compared to WWV; then news in English. March 14 at 0600, it was more like one second slow, after drumming and theme music (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** RUSSIA [and non]. GTRK Petropavlovsk/K, 6075, March 13 at 1400 timesignal was 3.5 seconds behind WWV; standard remark. And no 8GAL on 6074. One minute later at 1401 March 13, checked 6020 for YFR via Samara once AUSTRALIA [q.v.] had closed. Yes, YFR IS and opening listed Telugu, undermodulated. Heavy flutter this time, and about the same flutter on 6225 YFR via Dushanbe, TAJIKISTAN, Harold Camping in English about Hillary; both longpath (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** U S A. Further proof that one must constantly monitor WBCQ to be sure one`s program airs as scheduled: Knowing they had new WOR 1399 the night before for airing on 17495, I did not bother to check Thursday March 13 until 2345 on 7415, and Goddess Irina was still ``singing``! So I phoned them to enquire; seems there was an error on the log, but then the op started WOR 20 minutes late at 2350 and said it would play through to conclusion. The audio was somewhat muffled, apparently having been dubbed onto a cassette in need of cleaning, alignment, or new heads (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ### Never miss a thing.
