[HCDX] EWTN Radio Network Celebrates 20 Years on Air (1282)
EWTN Radio Network Celebrates 20 Years on Air (1282) http://www.ncregister.com/daily-news/ewtn-radio-network-celebrates-20-years-on-air/ by JOSEPH PRONECHEN 03/24/2012 Comments (3) EWTN photo ON THE AIR. Mother Angelica and the late Piet Derksen, a Dutch businessman, devout Catholic and philanthropist who helped Mother Angelica launch EWTN’s worldwide shortwave operation, WEWN, in 1992. EWTN Radio is celebrating its 20th anniversary. – EWTN photo EWTN Global Catholic Radio Network marked a huge milestone on March 7 to celebrate its 20th year on the air: It added its 180th affiliate when Bishop Cirilo Flores of San Diego flipped the switch to launch KCEO 1000 AM. On hand for the festivities were San Diego Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers, his wife, Tiffany, and attorney Charles LiMandri, the co-chairpersons who helped raise the funds for this new station. The occasion included another milestone, too. This affiliate also is Immaculate Heart Radio’s 26th station that broadcasts EWTN radio programming throughout California, Arizona, Nevada, New Mexico and Utah. Immaculate is EWTN’s largest affiliate group. “This is a great event to expand in San Diego,” said Immaculate’s president, Douglas Sherman. “The station reaches almost 4 million people, and a million of these are Catholic. That we can reach that many people full time has huge significance in our service to the Church.” Right after San Diego’s launch, seven more stations, from Delaware to Texas, have either started airing or will air within 45 days, bring the total of EWTN affiliates to 187. Sherman said the radio group’s partnership with EWTN goes back 17 years, when he and son Branigan visited Mother Angelica to obtain her permission to put EWTN (shortwave) programming on an AM/FM station they wanted to start in the Lake Tahoe/Reno, Nev., area. “We were the first in the country to sign a contract with EWTN to provide 24-hour programming,” Sherman noted. “Ave Maria beat us to get on the air in fall 1996, and we started Jan. 2, 1997.” That meeting also gained them something else: Mother Angelica’s prayers. She prayed over father and son. Today, Father Branigan Sherman works for Immaculate. The new station is a major one, as San Diego is the 17th-largest radio market in the country. It boosts a potential listening audience of more than 130 million people for EWTN radio total. EWTN radio is available in 19 of the country’s top 35 radio markets, including San Francisco, Dallas-Fort Worth, Detroit, Seattle, Washington and Boston. This does not count millions more listeners who are reached via shortwave and Sirius Satellite Radio Channel 130. “Basically, from the time John Paul II introduced the idea of the New Evangelization, you can follow the growth of Catholic radio,” pointed out EWTN Radio’s general manager, David Vacheresse. Emphasized Sherman: “None of us in Catholic radio would probably be here today if not for Mother Angelica and her commitment to provide programming up on satellite for anyone who could start (an AM/FM) radio station.” With San Diego launched, Sherman is turning his attention to the only major California city without Catholic radio in English: Los Angeles. Most likely, Rivers will be involved in fundraising there, too. He’s sold on the impact Catholic radio can have. A few years ago, he and Tiffany saw a short video of Immaculate’s impact. “The biggest thing was seeing how many lives are touched,” he said. “Catholics were coming back to the Church. There were those who chose life when they tuned into Catholic radio when going to the abortion clinic. There were so many powerful stories.” Rivers and his wife then wanted to be part of bringing Catholic programming to San Diego. But, says the NFL star, it goes beyond a local station. Rivers heard a fellow speaker at a recent men’s conference he spoke at in Alabama sum up the Catholic journey this way: “We have two jobs: to get to heaven and to take as many people as possible.” “Catholic radio helps get that done,” Rivers said. “It helps nourish our own faith and helps bring others. It’s something as simple as a radio station, yet is impacting millions of people.” The other San Diego station co-chairperson, LiMandri, knows firsthand the impact of Catholic radio. He was lead attorney for the National Organization for Marriage in the Proposition 8 initiative to make the definition of marriage between one woman and one man. He also represented supporters of the Mount Soledad cross, a court case involving the presence of a cross at a veterans’ memorial. “I became aware of the power of radio from those campaigns,” he said. “As you know, the mainstream media is not very cooperative or willing to share the fullness of the truth on these issues, and we’ve had much more success getting our message out through the radio.” Initial results showed “how powerful radio can be doing the Lord’s work. It’s a great way to inform
[HCDX] Adventist World Radio Revisits Sri Lanka
Adventist World Radio Revisits Sri Lanka on 03.15.2012 http://www.radioworld.com/article/adventist-world-radio-revisits-sri-lanka/212362 After a quarter century absence from the radio-broadcasting scene in Sri Lanka, Adventist World Radio is returning to the island on March 25. AWR aired for almost 40 years (starting in 1950) via the Radio Ceylon shortwave service near Colombo, Sri Lanka. It was the first syndicated Christian broadcast from this station. Radio Ceylon then became Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation and in 1988 AWR moved to its own shortwave station, KSDA in Agat, Guam. AWR is returning to Sri Lanka for a three-month stint, lasting until the end of June, and will transmit via the Deutsche Welle station near Trincomalee. AWR says the transfer will allow them to carry out maintenance on curtain antennas 1 and 2, and to install an additional curtain antenna at the Guam site. AWR encourages international radio monitors to submit reception reports on the temporary AWR usage of the Trincomalee shortwave station. Reception reports are welcome via regular mail, together with a suitable form of return postage, or via e-mail. The AWR scheduling for the new Sri Lanka broadcasts can be obtained from the AWR website. ---[Start Commercial]- Order your WRTH 2011: http://www.hard-core-dx.com/redirect2.php?id=wrth2011 ---[End Commercial]--- Hard-Core-DX mailing list Hard-Core-DX@hard-core-dx.com http://montreal.kotalampi.com/mailman/listinfo/hard-core-dx http://www.hard-core-dx.com/ ___ THE INFORMATION IN THIS ARTICLE IS FREE. [HCDX] RNW says farewell
-- So long, RNW: Farewell to the Dutch listener Published: March 28, 2012 - 2:33 pm | By RNW RNW says farewell to their Dutch listeners with a historic 24-hour farewell broadcast. On May 10 and 11 the editors, correspondents, former staff and listeners pay their respect to the end of an era. The program brings together many new wonderful memories and special moments in radio history of 65 years. Once more, the World Service will bring that special feeling of home to all corners of the world, the feeling of the radio as a friend in a foreign land. And RNW continues. In the future, RNW will bring free speech to parts of the world where press freedom is under pressure. For people who are deprived of independent information. We look back at how it all began with music from Radio Oranje and Jetty Paërl. Of course there is attention to the many news, because we have briefed you for many years about what happened in the Netherlands. Like the flood in 1953, but also the murder of Pim Fortuyn which RNW covered in its own way. Of course there is much space for our special programs about culture, language, for expats, seafarers, and truck drivers. The music that RNW made is discussed, and also your memories of the Worldwide will be given space. We have spent years with passion and joy to work for you. In this marathon broadcast, we say farewell to the Dutch broadcasting, but we will also tell you how it will continue after this year with RNW. Reception The 24-hour marathon starts on 10 May at 22:00 and lasts until 11 May 22:00 (Dutch summer time). The radio broadcast can be heard via shortwave in Europe (with summaries on shortwave in the rest of the world), satellite (BVN) and www.wereldomroep.nl (with video). [HCDX] Times Internet in talks with All India Radio to bring IPL commentary on radio channel
Times Internet (TIL), the internet and mobile venture of Times Group, said on Wednesday that it was in talks with All India Radio ( AIR) for broadcasting commentary of all Indian Premier League (IPL) matches. TIL has offered to share revenues equally with the government's radio channel in the tie-up, chief executive officer Rishi Khiani said. TIL is aiming to seal the agreement before the fifth season of the IPL, a T20 format of cricket, which begins on April 4. A TIL-led consortium paid Rs 261.6 crore last year to acquire IPL's global internet, mobile and radio rights, as well as television rights in some territories for four years. TIL also partnered with Google last year to stream IPL matches on Indiatimes and Youtube. Around 72 million people in India watched the fourth season of the IPL online, spending on an average one hour and 15 minutes everyday. For the fifth season, online viewers will get an improved viewing experience on a revamped website with new technology. The new look of the website will feature high-definition streaming of the matches, which will adapt to slow data speeds and bandwidth availability and offer buffer-free viewing. An interactive score card will show important highlights such as wickets and runs scored. With the digital video recording feature, viewers will be able to go back to any point in the match and watch important developments. The video-on-demand feature will offer highlight packages such as fours, sixes and face-offs between players occurred during the match. Sponsors will be able to integrate their advertisements to specialise this page. TIL is creating content to host on the website and has also tied up with seven teams to offer their merchandise on the portal. The company will introduce new pages on news, latest tweets from players, fun facts, player information and interviews, merchandise, statistics, match schedule by team, date and venue. Users will be allowed to use their own cheerleaders who will appear on the page to cheer on key moments during live streaming of the match. Times Internet will also introduce IPL Battleground where viewers can participate in live discussions and support their teams.
