[HCDX] Helpful webpage for homebrew preselectors.
I have found the information on this page very useful in my building of a mediumwave preselector: http://www.geocities.com/amdxlog/index.html The one thing that I found really helpful was learning that the Q of a LC circuit is greatly affected by the impedance of the circuit. I took 20 minutes to wind a few toroids to lower the impedance of my tuner and boy, it is ~much~ sharper now, really cutting down on the slop from nearby channels. This should really help in logging those 9khz splits from Europe and elsewhere. Tonight, St. Kitts on 555 khz was audible with talk on my Palstar R-30 using just a crummy wire under flat conditions. I really feel it has really improved my R-30 into a much stronger DX machine. If you like building your own gear, check it out. Well, I came short of an all nighter, but did manage 0700z and up again at 1130z. Even weaker SS station under. NEW! JW-WI 1500khz XEDF Mexico City, Mexico 10.18.04 0103z VG QSB peaks to S9+20db, lively "La Una" indent at top of the hour. NEW! JW-WI Am real happy with those considering the usual Cuban and Mexican powerhouses were not to be found. RVC on 530khz was rather steady through the night though. I then got up early and with semi-local WLIP, Kenosha 1050khz phased, heard a station quickly fade up loud with the announcer saying "Aloha!" ... then gone. [HCDX] MW antenna thoughts ...
I crawled up from the basement listening post last night and did some antenna comparisons with my box loop that I normally don't use (because it's deaf in the basement). I compared my 3' box loop against a 85' wire that slopes up to the top of a 70 ft oak tree. As has always been stated, vertical antennas are noisy, that's what I found too. Using just the loop on 750khz with WSB nulled, I could hear two different spanish stations weakly just above the noise. I then turned the loop so WSB was peaked, then phased them down with the wire (MFJ1026). The spanish stations were inaudible, only band noise was heard. The wire is awesome on the 60 and 90 meter tropical bands, but on MW, it's not the best performer. I had the gut feeling that the wire would outperform the loop because of the height, but that was wrong. I also hooked up the Palstar MW550P MW tuner that I recently purchased from K3PI to the box loop. With the 12 db of amplification it provides, plus the 10db pre-amp of my modified Icom R71a, signals are simply screaming in now. I had Mexico City's XEX, 730khz, S9+10db on a particularly normal night. This aleviates my fears that I would miss something while using the loop because it might not be sensitive enough. The box loop has plenty of gain now! Due to the natural resonance of the tuner and that of the loop, when tuned up on 730khz, my super-pest local station on 1290 was a mere S9 with both pre-amps on instead of the needle pegging signal it usually puts in, so I have no fear of images despite the large amount of amplification. This could be a powerful combo ... box loop plus Palstar preselector and I intend on putting it through it's paces in the comming months. Tonight, I'll take the loop outside in the yard. I've had better results with it out there in the past and with the pre-amps on it, it should really be a signal getter. As I get my EWE's put back up in the yard, I'll make more comparison's against the amplified loop and report my findings. 73! [HCDX] 555khz St Kitts logged in WI !
I've been chasing them for years but now I got 'em! ZIZ Radio, St Kitts, 555khz, 0451z October 2, 2004 I got very lucky in that the best audio came through right when they were giving a long ID. Heavy slop from Chicago on 560khz. Several mentions of "Zed eye zed radio" with telephone number and address given. Clip: http://members.aol.com/j999w/DX/555khz_ZIZ_StKitts.wav (424kb, 52seconds). Recorded directly to the hard drive of my 233mhz PC using CoolEdit2000 software. This is my noise reduced, filtered clip. I did use the Palstar MW550P tuner with the Icom R71a. It certainly helped as far as being a pre-amp, but unsure whether it really reduced the QRM or not. Antenna was a 15x50 ft unterminated EWE (haven't finished terminating it yet) ... the QRN was a little less on that antenna, so that's why I used it. [HCDX] My new antenna ...
... ROCKS ! I've got this 70 ft high oak tree in the back yard and have always used it for wires, but have struggled getting up past the 40 or 45 ft mark. Well, I finally got smart, went out and bought a new fishing rod, and after a couple of tries using my "Wrist Rocket" (sling shot), I slung a nut/bolt/washers over the TOP of the tree with ease. YEAH ! THAT's what I'm talking about !! I then pulled up some nylon cord, and followed that with a twisted pair of #20 wire, soldered together at the end (was either that or #14 house wire). The wire slopes down to the basement window, then in, through an antenna tuner, then to the radio. First off, it looks awesome. It starts at 2 ft above ground and slopes up at about 45 degrees into the sky (okay, about 70ft). Secondly, it works better! I think the antenna tuner is a big part of the equation which optimizes the antenna for each band I'm listening to. On the AM BCB, now during the day I've got semi-local 1540khz WTKM at S9+30db on my Yaesu FT-767gx. With what was my best antenna, a 55ft piece of hardline hung in a pine tree, it was S9 at best. Last night, signals above 1500khz (the lowest my tuner will go right now) were S9+40db. Unreal. Tuning around last night amonst all the static crashes I heard (tentatively) La Voz del Napo (new for me), 3279.55khz, from Equador at about S9 (crashes to 30db over S9). R. Mauritanie on 4845khz was an incredible S9+40db. CFRX, 6070khz, is S9 in the daytime. Higher up, I'm not sure how it's working yet, but I'm hearing R. Hungary at sign on, 1700z, 15,335khz and I was working Japan and Australia on 20m CW ham band last night with better luck than my dipole. Will do some further testing and A/B comparisons, but so far, this aerial is a winner. [HCDX] Loggings on new radio.
Just bought a used Yaesu FT-767gx ham receiver with general coverage receiving capabilities. It totally ROCKS as a shortwave receiver. The audio is excellent, the selectivity is good, the tuning knob is so smth, it's a joy to use. On the AM BCB band, it is subject to overload during the daytime when the locals are at their highest power, but with the attenuator in, it works fine. Here's a few audio clips of some DX I've heard with it recently (antenna is a 20m vertical dipole, top at 35 ft ... hung in a tree). All are new stations for me. http://members.aol.com/j999w/DX";>http://members.aol.com/j999w/DX One is of Radio Farda from Greece in Farsi on 15,290khz. Listen for the "Radio Farda". Signal was rather weak, so there is some hiss, and I spliced two clips together with a 'pip' in between. 175kb .wav file. The second clip is of what I believe to be the clandestine Radio Free Asia, 13,700khz at the 1800z sign on (according to the ILG database). I ran across this by accident as I was listening to the carrier in USB when they opened up with audio, so I switched to AM. Interval signal, followed by ident in Chinese. 310kb .wav file. The third is of Radio National de Venezuela (according to ILG relayed from Cuba beamed at South America ... hence the weak signal). ILG shows that the station heard underneith could be Voice of Iran. Easy spanish ident on this after the interval signal. Listening in USB on this one. 11875khz, 2200z, . 377kb .wav file All recorded on a 233mhz PC with CoolEdit 2000. I'll post more as I hear them. 73! jw K9RZZ ---[Start Commercial]- World Radio TV Handbook 2004 is out! [HCDX] 720khz loggings with WGN off ...
I'm about 90 miles north of WGN, so they are pretty much impossible to phase or null out, so I was excited about the possibilities to hear something new. I thought conditions were pretty good with 730khz, XEX, Mexico City, running about S9+10db during most of the test. I had S4 line noise on all antennas except my big 55 ft high vertical, so that's what I used with the Icom R71a, recording on cassette. Clips of most of the highlights below can be found at http://members.aol.com/j999w/DX in downloadable Real Audio format. Any help with the unidents would be greatly appreciated since this is probalby my only chance for the next 10 years to get any of these ! No oldies were heard, no Jamaican sounding stations. Highlights: 0836z Unknown Spanish ident during brief carrier drop. Two time pips, "La Una ..." "La noche ... cinco" several mentions of Yucatan. Not sure who that would be. Heavy 100hz heterodyne from who I believe is YNRC Radio Catolica, Nicaragua which has been reported on 720.1khz before. 0910z 100hz het is really loud now, peaking S6. I can hear a woman talking. 0921z Quick "La ...casa" ident. 0937z Man in English with what sounds like "south side ... 4:37 (EST) for the South side". 0950z Religious talk in English. 0955z Quick ident "Radio Oriente', Porlamar" (silent 'r') then into Venezuela national anthem. 1000z Woman in English talking " ... for this holiday season, we have a special gift for you ... free CD ... live performances ... ". I searched the web on this, but found nothing. 1020z mix of two Spanish stations, and some gospel music in short bursts until carrier came back on. Soo, I'm logging: 720khz YVQE Radio Oriente', Porlamar, Venezuela 11.30.03 0955z fair to good with quick ident "Radio Oriente', Porlama" then into national anthem. WGN off. NEW ! [HCDX] Sunday 'porta-bog' log with unident audio clip - HELP !
Once again I went over to the local park with my backpack Palstar R-30 and layed out the 700 ft 'porta-bog' in a field of tall grass. I arrived about 9:45pm and was on the air by 10pm. Conditions towards the Caribbean initally seemed pretty good. WDHP from Fredericksted, US Virgin Islands was in strong, easily dominating 1620khz with CW music. Amazing for being 2,000mi away. As I tuned down the band, I was hearing the usual suspects from the east coast until I hit 970khz. Here, a spanish language station was way on top and I've never logged any spanish on here before! It was some sort of phone in show with some promos at the end. Unfortunately, I didn't catch any ID and the band started closing about 10:30pm cdt, with WDHP gone now too. BY 11:00pm I was packed and heading home (getting cold out!). I have a clip of the unknown spanish station and one of WDHP from last night, here: http://members.aol.com/j999w/DX The unknown is long, 1.3mb in Real Audio (low rate so any Real player will play it) and lasts 10 minutes. [HCDX] Friday night BOG log !
I didn't have much time, but I did manage to sneek out for a short time tonight backpacking the Palstar R-30 to a local park and laying out a beverage on ground (BOG) antenna. This time I brought my MFJ-1026 but had left the coax jumper at home ( Doh ! ), and then while stringing out the wire, my speaker wire pigtail broke 100 ft from the end. Not knowing initially where it had broken, I stopped pulling. so that left me with 100 ft of wire still on the spool, thus I only used 500 ft tonight. This is layed in a field of tall grass. I've got the MFJ-1026 and Palstar R-30 individually wrapped in bubble wrap, then taped together. That fits nicely in the bottom of my normal sized backpack. The plan (when I get the bugs worked out) is to only have to unzip the top of the pack, hook up the wire, turn on the radio, and be DXing. Minimal setup, minimal take down. I've got both the MFJ and Palstar running off the same external 12v rechargable battery, and when I get a simple 12v to 9v converter built, I'll be running my tape recorder off that too. My antenna is a 500 ft spool of stranded 14g wire with 200 ft of speaker wire pigtailed on the end of that (stretches too easily though, and breaks! ). I put the spool on a "T" made from water pipe that makes up my cable winder. I leave a 10 inch piece sticking out the ground so all I have to do is mount the "T" on that, slide the spool on, place a cap to hold on the spool, and walk it out. Winding it up is a snap using a wooden handle with a sawed off screw on the end that I stick in one of the holes on the spool. I can easily wind up the antenna at 100 ft per minute. The wire gets hidden in the woods (pretty heavy to carry each time), the pipe is dissasembled and goes in the pack. Only a short pipe sticking out of the ground stays at the DX site. Anyway, either the band was flat today, or I just got out there too early (7pm). No Mexican or Cubans heard at all, although as I was driving home, XEX was audible on 730khz using the car radio. First impressions with this antenna can be deceiving. At home, with omni directional antennas, the band is alive with interferring stations, channels roaring with a jumble of stations comming in from everywhere. I don't hear that with the BOG. It's deceiving because as you tune across the band, stations that normally are very loud, are quite weak, then suddenly BOOM, you tune across a loud station, but it's not a powerhouse KDKA, or WSM, it's WLOC Monfordville, KY, or WDHP Frederiksted, US Virgin Islands -this antenna is very directional ! Especially at the top end of the band. So here's tonight's log: Palstar R-30, 500ft BOG aimed south east. 1150khz WLOC Monfordville, KY 10.17.03 1920cdt VG with quick ident. [HCDX] My first backpack mediumwave miniDXpedition ! (long)
First off, many thanks for all the opinions on portable receivers. I settled on the Palstar R-30 and quickly found one on eBay ( thanks Rick ! ). At the same time, I picked up an old Realistic VSC-1000 portable tape recorder for $10 also on eBay. The more I use it, the more I like the Palstar R-30. I don't notice any front end overload on MW with my EWE antennas even during the day (my Icom R71a has a little trouble when the locals run day power), and the selectivity with the stock filters is more than adequate. My only disappointment is that it's quite deaf on LW below 500khz. Hopefully someone will come up with a mod for this. For portable operation, I wrapped the receiver in bubble wrap leaving the front and back panels accessible. The local American Science and Surplus store had 4 A-h, 12 volt rechargeable batteries cheap and I'm running one of those instead of the internal AAA batteries. The radio plus recorder fit easily inside my day pack, leaving plenty of room for full sized headphones and a spool of wire. Fully loaded the pack is quite light. Today it weighed 22 lbs because I had 700 ft of wire and some water pipe that was to be used as a cable winder. The goal of tonight's test was more equipment oriented: How long will it take to set up? Will the radio get overloaded? Will I freeze my butt off? So I only spent 40 minutes listening. I drove to a large local park about 5 miles from home, walked about a half mile to a secluded grassy field, and set up next to a tree at the edge of the adjoining woods. Using a rock, I pounded an 18 inch piece of 1/2 inch water pipe on top of which I had a T fitting with two 6 inch pieces of pipe that makes a handy place to put the spool of wire. I took 500 ft of #14 stranded wire with another 200 ft of speaker wire soldered on the end (yup, it fit on the spool). The 700 ft of wire just fit across the field, laying on top of some long grass. I could go longer, but it would cross a gravel access road. I tied the near end to the tree for fear that some 4wd truck would blast across the field, snag the wire, and drag away my radio! I had brought a home-brew matching transformer, but it wasn't working, so I just used the high impedance wire clip on the radio and that worked fine. I had no problem at all with overload even with a 5kw directional local 2 miles up the road that really tears me up at home. I had the wire running towards the Caribbean but wasn't hearing any Cubans at all. RVC Turks and Caicos was running S9 down on 530khz. Voice of Nevis had a weak carrier on 895khz, I heard some very rapid SS on 1170khz, and some SS under WSB on 750khz. I worked my way up the band and stopped on 1620khz when I heard a very strong station running upbeat reggae type music, I parked here hoping for an ID that I never got but I'm pretty sure it was WDHP Frederickton, US Virgin Islands ... peaking S9 !! This was at about 0230z. Here is the clip in Real Audio (8 mins 14 seconds), it's big, 1 mb, but worth it: http://members.aol.com/j999w/DX Any Real Audio player should play it since I used an old version of RA Encoder to make it. It sounds a little muddy at max signal because the recorder is getting too much audio from the receiver. I need to fix that. Yet, not bad for a 12 year old recorder. The only other time I've heard this station it was very weak with poor copy. I guess these BOGs (Beverage on Ground) really DO work !! It took me 15 minutes to set up including walking the wire out, and only 12 minutes to pack up from "radio off" to swinging the pack on my back. The water pipe cable winder worked well. More expeditions to follow as time allows. 73, John Wilke WB9UAI Milwaukee, WI Palstar R-30, 700ft BOG ---[Start Commercial]- World Radio TV Handbook 2003 is out! [HCDX] Portable MW/SW receiver opinion needed !
I am in the market for a portable receiver with the following requirements: - Must fit in backpack/daypack without breaking my back. I still need to be able to ride my bicycle while carrying it. - Must have good performance when connected to longwires/beverages without undue overloading. (perhaps with loose coupling or preselector inline). - Low battery consumption. Either internal or external. - Have a functional S meter (meter or LEDs). - Selectable AGC would be a plus. (or on/off) - Digital readout would be a plus. Something like the Icom R71a or Kenwood R1000 is on the large side. They will fit in a backpack, but are on the heavy side. Perhaps Sony 2010 ? I have some mini dxpeditions in mind and need to find a suitable receiver. Thanks, John Wilke WB9UAI Milwaukee ---[Start Commercial]- World Radio TV Handbook 2003 is out! Yippee! Heard my first transpacific carriers on medium wave. Using my Icom R71a and 55 ft vertical I heard carriers (no audio) on 738, 846, 1017, and 1503khz. 1503khz was the best, peaking at 0340cdt. 846 wasn't audible until 0420cdt and then only for about 10 minutes. Check out the audio clip of 1503 here (200k .wav file) : http://members.aol.com/j999w/DX Also checked other bands ... nobody on 160m, Alice Springs Australia was very good on 2310khz at 0400cdt ... gone by 0430cdt. I believe that it's accepted in ham radio that to make any claims of DX, the telephone must be hung up ... i.e. you can set up the contact via phone, but then hang up. [HCDX] MW loggings
The following stations were heard while doing some in the shack work. I parked on 1520, started the recorder and went over it later. Too early for KOMA. Trying to clean up the winter antenna damage before the bugs get too bad. Lots of rust on my EWE termination boxes, and on the vertical, so I cleaned and painted them. I also added a counterpoise under my E/W EWE and boy did it make a difference ! Not so much in the nulls, but the gain came way up. I'll have to make some daytime comparisons to see just how much it helped, but now the EWE runs equal to my 55 ft vertical which it never did before. Re: [HCDX] New EWE antenna
My EWE report: I found this to be a good time to make repairs on mine as well. My north EWE had come down over winter, and water had gotten into the termination box, rusting everything. Hope to have that one up soon. My east/west EWE has been working well lately, allowing me to log 800khz XEV Chihuahua in late May, and 1620khz WDHP US Virgin Islands early in June. I usually change directions manually by swapping the coax and termination cables, but hope to put in relays later this summer for instant E/W switching. I use remote termination by using cheap photocells ( 75 cents each) and a small 12volt automotive lightbulb mounted in a metal or plastic box. Controlling the voltage from the shack via a twisted pair of wires provides great control of the nulls, enabling me to swing it about 30 degrees each way off the back. High angle signals such as WJR Detroit (400 miles east) are difficult to null very well, but New York City and Toronto can easily be put into the noise leaving the channel completely clear for western DX. My north EWE is 15 ft high and 75 feet long and works great on longwave for Canadian NDB's and transatlantic LW broadcasters. The E/W ewe is 20 ft high on one end, 15 ft high on the other end, and approx 50 ft long. My other antenna setup that is killer for DX is a 55 ft piece of hardline hung in a pine tree phased against a 3 ft box loop. Gives great nulls and is very sensitive to low angle skip signals such as Cuba and Mexico. As an aside, I find that on shortwave, the EWE works like a short longwire, favoring signals away from the fed end, rather than towards the fed end as on MW and LW. Good DX to all ! 73, John Wilke WB9UAI Milwaukee, WI USA R71a, EWE, Vert, loop. ---[Start Commercial]- World Radio TV Handbook 2003 is out!
