[HCDX] 15 March Log

2010-03-15 Thread Sean Gilbert, International Editor - WRTH
No monitoring over the weekend due to SWLing in the RSGB Commonwealth CW
contest on the ham bands. Found unusually good conditions on most bands. 3
5MHz/80m was open to New Zealand early on Sunday morning. 7MHz/40m opened to
Oceania Saturday evening and Sunday morning, 21MHz/15m had great signals
from all over Africa, while 14MHz/20m was open to just about everywhere
during the 24 hours of the contest. The only band that was poor was
10m/28MHz where I only found a couple of stations. Today though, 10m was
open to Western Australia, the first VK I have heard on that band since 2007

Here are todays broadcast loggings:

CHINA
CRI 15230 via Sackville, in English, 1432 15 Mar. OM
translating a YL talking in Chinese about friendship,
then back into China Drive prgr. (s9+10) - (S.Gilbert, UK)

CUBA
Radio Habana Cuba (presumed) 15120 via Habana, in Spanish,
1353 15 Mar. Presumed to be RHC. YL talk with some music.
Heard in clear occasionally over BSKSA. Most of time beating
with or below Saudi Arabia. Appears to be a few Hz off
frequency as there is a SAH when the two stns are near the
same strength. (s5) - (S.Gilbert, UK)

EGYPT
Radio Cairo 15080 via Abis, in Arabic (I think),
1338 15 Mar. Incredibly distorted audio. Worst I have ever
heard R.Cairo. OM announcer. Overall this signal is not
useable. Urgent repairs needed! Switched to FM and the
signal is just as understandable as it was in AM, if not
slightly better! (s8) - (S.Gilbert, UK)

FRANCE
Radio France Internationale 15300 via Issoudun, in French,
1445 15 Mar. 2 OM's talking. Some flutter and what sounds
like utility/digital (4-6 short pulses then 1 longer pulse,
rough/raspy sounding signal on AM or SSB, certainly not CW).
QRM on signal. (s7) - (S.Gilbert, UK)

Radio France Internationale 21580 via Issoudun, in French,
1208 15 Mar. YL talk, various mentions of "President",
comments from om's. Rapid, deep QSB from s4 to unreadable.
(s4-s0) - (S.Gilbert, UK)

GERMANY
Deutsche Welle 15275 via Kigali, in German, 1439 15 Mar. YL
and OM. Playing excerpts from an American accented speaker
(sounds like a politician) and then presumably translating
and commenting on it. OM with ID in German. (s9) - (S.Gilbert, UK)

INDIA
All India Radio 15050 via Dehli, in Sinhala, 1328 15 Mar.
YL singing Bollywood type song. Then OM with slower song.
Audio level dropped very noticeably when songs finished and
OM announcer started. Audio so low it is difficult to hear
more than an occasional word against background noise on
the signal. (s2-s7) - (S.Gilbert, UK)

KUWAIT
Radio Kuwait 15110 Kabd, in Arabic, 1347 15 Mar. OM with
talk, into instrumental ME music with comments from OM.
(s9) - (S.Gilbert, UK)

LIBYA
Voice of Africa (presumed) 21695 Sabrata,
in Swahili (presumed), 1230 15 Mar. very weak today, ME
style music. YL heard. Even using SSB with DSP noise
reduction, it is very difficult to make out what language is
being used. (http://www.hfradio.org.uk

[HCDX] 11 March log

2010-03-12 Thread Sean Gilbert, International Editor - WRTH
Some incredibly strong signals around today, the strongest being from CRI
which was reading 50dB over 9 on my Icom's S-meter. Interesting result when
listening to CRI. Because the sites used were quite a distance apart, even
though they were both in Western China, there was a sight echo as the signal
from the furthest site took longer to arrive (I would think that was the
reason, it was too short to have been long path vs short path). I could hear
the echo by using the 'dual watch' feature of the Icom, which is like using
a second receiver but it only really works in the same band and mode as the
main receiver. The audio levels from the main and sub receiver are balanced
with a front panel control. The audio from both of the receivers are fed to
both headphone channels, rather than having the main receive in one earphone
and the sub receive in the other earphone, as is the case with some of the
Yaesu radio's. This means that the echo is easy to hear.

CHINA
CRI 13670 via Kashi, in English, 1306 11 Mar. China Drive prgr. Talking
about the high rate of kidney disease in China. Massively strong signal.
(s9+50) - (S.Gilbert, UK)

CRI 13790 via Ürümqi, in English, 1309 11 Mar. China Drive, //13670 but
10-15dB weaker. Slight echo between the two (using dual receive on Icom),
caused by differing sites/distances. (s9+40) - (S.Gilbert, UK)

IRAN
VOIRI 15545 via Sirjan, in Arabic, 1553 11 Mar. Female with talk. (s9+20 QSB
to s6) - (S.Gilbert, UK)

NETHERLANDS
Radio Netherlands Worldwide 13740 via Madagascar, in Dutch, 1647 11 Mar. om
talking, with comments from another om. Mentioned 'Dutch' and 'Europe' a few
times (s9+30) - (S.Gilbert, UK)

SAUDI ARABIA
BSKSA 15435 Riyadh, in Arabic, 1547 11 Mar. Wailing/chanting, lots of long
pauses with blank carrier. 30dB QSB every few seconds, like aircraft flutter
but is continuous so could be change in ionosphere. (s9+40 some QSB) - (S
Gilbert, UK)

SUDAN
Radio Dabanga 13800 via Madagascar, in Arabic/Sudanese, 1533 11 Mar. ID
Radio Dabanga" and frequent mentions of Darfur by OM. (s9+20 ) - (S.Gilbert,
UK)

Radio Dabanga 13800 via Nauen, in Arabic/Sudanese, 1638 11 Mar. OM talking
with comments from another OM. Music jingle between programme segments.
(s9+40) - (S.Gilbert, UK)

USA
Family Radio Worldwide (WYFR) 13695 via Okeechobee, in Chinese, 1300 11 Mar.
Clarinet music followed by OM and YL talking in turns. (s4-s7) - (S.Gilbert,
UK)

Voice of America 13870 via Botswana, in Swahili, 1634 11 Mar. OM and YL
mentioning various place names in Africa such as Mogadishu and Somalia.
(s9+10dB) - (S.Gilbert, UK)

Radio Martí 13820 via Greenville, in Spanish, 1634 11 Mar. om and yl talking
some background QRM from BBC WS (Ascension Isl) on same QRG but Martí much
stronger. (s7) - (S.Gilbert, UK)

2010-02-27 Thread Sean Gilbert, International Editor - WRTH
9760kHz 1105 27 Feb, KBS World Radio DRM broadcast to Eu. ID is "VT Digital"

[HCDX] CVC Special DRM Txn 22-24 Feb

2010-02-23 Thread Sean Gilbert, International Editor - WRTH

INDIA:

23 Feb 10, 1215 UTC, 17590kHz, CVC DRM

ID: CVC Test India; SNR: very poor at 8.5dB; DRM Mode C at 9.18kbps, mono.

No audio recovered, signal just not strong enough for demodulation but solid
ID obtained using PC 'Dream' software and unmodified Racal RA1792 (16kHz B/W
filter with -6kHz BFO offset in CW mode) with the ALA1530. I will try
earlier tomorrow in the hope that propagation is more favourable. I am
certain that if this was an analogue signal, I would have had no problems
listening to it as it was a decent strength, but obviously not clear enough
for digital - such is the price of 'progression'.

[HCDX] Disco Palace

2010-02-16 Thread Sean Gilbert, International Editor - WRTH
DRM:
6015kHz @ 1400, ID: "The Disco Palace" (A06021), Issodun (actual carrier
switched on at 45 seconds late), pop music - "If I can't have you" by Yvonne
Elliman, then Star Wars theme by Meco (disco version, not the John Williams
one). Canned, sung ID at 1415: "All night, feel the music - Disco Palace",
then back into music - Dr Hook (When You're In Love With A Beautiful Woman).

Bit Rate: 20.96kbps Stereo; SNR 22dB; Last track/album info given at end of
song, in info box (using Dream software).

Website given as http://www.thediscopalace.com and email as
i...@thediscopalace.com. Some very brief dropouts at the beginning, like the
signal was being clipped - may be software related but not noticed on any
other DRM signal, seemed to settle down after about 5-10 minutes.

[HCDX] Late delivery of WRTH

2009-02-07 Thread Sean Gilbert, International Editor - WRTH
I have noticed that quite a few people are/have had problems with the
delivery of WRTH2009. The publisher is also aware of this and has asked me
to send the following explanation:

"We are very sorry for the delay in shipping of WRTH 2009 by Amazon.com.
Copies of the book reached the Port of New York on December 16. They were
trucked from there in a sealed container direct to the distribution center
in Virginia, USA. They should, and could easily have been, released from
there before Christmas. For some reason they did not get released
*officially* until January 15. We think they were actually released on
February 2.

We are aware that the late delivery to Amazon has also had an impact on
readers and clubs all over the world who ordered from Amazon.com or from
websites who do so.

This is the worst distribution performance ever in any country for any
edition of WRTH. Next year we will be using a different distribution system.

World Radio TV Handbook
--
I can only apologise for the distribution problems from Amazon. You can
order direct from our website http://www.wrth.com as well as your usual
sources.
