580 WHP, Harrisburg PA, heard at 0905 UTC on 27 February with special
DX test for IRCA, NRC, et al. Male announcement of test and its
purpose, sponsors and station address along with QSL guidelines, all
under a slow speed CW ID. Good reception here with minimal QRM from
CFRA Ottawa, and no sign of WKAQ, San Juan PR.

1460 WTKT, Harrisburg PA, heard at 0848 on 27 February with special DX
test, with announcement as in WHP above and Morse. Fair signal, but
fading bad at times in the mix of other US stations on channel. It
appears, at least this hour, that the test was three minutes late in
this slot. I'm glad I stuck around on-frequency to see if anything was
going to be heard!

Re: [HCDX] Log Report for Al Muick 29 January 2012

2012-02-04 Thread Eike Bierwirth
Hi Al and all,

take care when reading the csv file, it does include many inactive entries for
a reason. The last three entries of each line give a clue if and when the entry
is active:

 - If the first of the three is a 6, the entry was/is/will be active for the
dates specified, e.g.:
  6;3010;1911
means active from 30 October til 19 November of the current season, inactive
on other dates (cancelled txion, changed frequency, ...) This is useful when
you check your logs on a later date when the transmission has already been
cancelled and deleted from the up-to-date databases.

 - If the first of the three is an 8, the entry is INACTIVE until further
notice. This is used for domestic stations that might come back at random, or
for some wooden entries when I don't know which of them actually will be used.
When the station is clearly IDed to be on the air, then I just change the 8 to
a 0 to make the entry active.

Entries such marked as inactive are not copied into the bc and freq files,
which are generated from the csv file with a date filter.

These and more codes are explained in the readme.txt.

Sorry for the confusion!

73,
Eike

[HCDX] Log Report for Al Muick 29 January 2012

2012-01-29 Thread Albert Muick

QTH:Whitehall, Pennsylvania, USA
RX: WinRadio G303e
ANT:Wellbrook ALA1530P active loop

BRASIL Radio Brasil Central 11815, coming in about S4 right now at 2350
UTC on January 29 2012. This could be a good night for Brazilians.
Playing Brazilian and international oldies and pops with thundering,
full IDs by male announcer in Portuguese. Heard Badfinger's Day After
Day from their live album, which was rather nice to hear. Killed by
REE Digital DRM sign-on at 2356, but the REE DRM signal faded down many
times and was drowned out by Brasil Central. REE is beamed to South
America, so Brasil central apparently can overcome the
back-of-the-beam field strength.

BRASIL Radio Clube do ParĂ¡ 4885 caught with very strong signals at 0442
UTC on 29 January 2012 with Brazilian music with latin beat. Lots of IDs
and commercials as well in Portuguese. Really enjoyable. Makes me
definitely want to go see Carnival!

OMAN Radio Sultanate of Oman 13750, caught at 1433 with Arabic to
eastern Africa. Koranic chanting into long-winded discussion program
between two men. Fair signals, considering the broadcast is supposed to
be beamed to eastern Africa.

Al,

Are you sure about Oman? I haven`t seen this reported before. Not in EiBi or
Aoki, but in HFCC, likely one of several wooden registrations from them. But
Iran in Hindi is on 13750 at 1430-1530, and at that hour would have been
starting the transmission in Arabic (Qur`an).

Since this was Sunday, lucky that Cuba was not on 13750 until later for Alo,
Presidente.

2012-01-29 Thread Albert Muick

Hi Glenn,

EiBi has Oman here 1400-1730 UTC in their 15 January update. I'm also
wondering if Iran would have had the Arabic Koranic chanting on a Hindi
program? Haven't listened to Iran in ages, so I do not know for sure.

Is there anyone else has heard this? Guess I did get lucky with Cuba.
Was surprised that they were not there. I will give it another shot
tomorrow before I make a final call on it, unless someone else has some
input one way or the other.

Let us move this one onto the tentative pile until I can have a crack
at it again tomorrow. I didn't come across the signal until 1433, so
the sign-on would be a definite giveaway! You're more than likely right
and it is a wooden entry, but now I've got to make sure.

AUSTRALIA, VMW Wiluna Meteo, 12362 USB, heard at 2140 on 06 January 2012
with maritime weather including sea heights. Several IDs. Male voice
had that borderline quality where it was hard to tell if it was real or
synth'ed. Very weak, but no QRM and no major QSB. At this time of day,
probably due to the loop qualities and orientation.

BRAZIL (TENT)., Possibly Radio Aparecida on 11855 at 2350 on 06 January
2012 with long talks by a woman in Portuguese, then a booming
announcement by a man and continued talk. Station was weak and somewhat
under-modulated, so I could not get a clear enough ID even on USB or
Synch AM. Another long booming announcement on the hour, and definitely
Portuguese, so I am going with Aparecida, supposedly running only 1kW.

Time to do the Snoopy Dance! After only a couple of weeks of arguing
with my local utility (PPL), I finally got them to repair the 500kV
transmission line which runs about 300m behind my property and was a
real buzzkill almost 24/7. They also cleaned up a few of their utility
poles again. Now 518kHz is free for NAVTEX DX and overall noise is down
about 15dbB. I am now at something approaching normal listening conditions.

JAPAN (non), Furusato no Kaze, 9550, transmitting from Taiwan, in
Japanese with talk by female and male announcers. Heard at 1337 UTC on
23 December. Announcements were interspersed with short instrumental
jingles or sound effects. SINPO 45434. Positive ID at 1345 UTC. They've
had a bit of jamming in the past, but today I noticed nothing. I wonder
if North Korea has its hands too full with other matters at the moment?

KOREA, SOUTH, HLO Seoul Radio Coastal Station, 12843, heard at 2250 UTC
on 23 December pounding the brass with a Morse CQ channel marker. SINPO
25522. Unusual to hear them at my QTH this time of day. I presume it's
due to the loop antenna. This station is a very friendly QSLer, BTW.

USA, WLW, Cincinnati Ohio, 700, heard at 0051 UTC on 23 December with a
slew of commercial announcements, station IDs and a short news/weather
break. Heard a commercial for Skyline Chili, which, by all accounts, is
some pretty decent grub. Like a local at SINPO 45544. Could not hear
the QRM for the strength of this signal today.

[HCDX] Log Report for Al Muick 19 December 2011 - CORRECTION RE VOICE OF PUJIAN

2011-12-20 Thread Albert Muick

QTH:Whitehall, Pennsylvania, USA
RX: WinRadio G303e
ANT: Wellbrook ALA1530P active loop

9705 - The station I reported as tentative, Voice of Pujian, Shanghai
China, has been investigated by both myself and Ron Howard, and it seems
that it is indeed the Voice of America from Tinian, Northern Mariana
Islands, and NOT Pujian. I have no explanation for hearing Pujian
spoken twice, outside of completely probable coincidence as well as bad
ears and wishful thinking. Nevertheless, there always existed some
doubt in my mind, and that is why I listed it as tentative.

I heard VoA's sign-on at 1300 today, with a much clearer signal than
yesterday.

EiBi does list Pujian on during this time frame, but Pujian's own
website http://www.yicai.com/news/2010/12/641494.html lists all their
shortwave frequencies but this one. I have been shown communications
between other DXers stating that 9705 is a summer frequency, but EiBi
and even WRTH 2012 do not show this.

This is disappointing, but it is yet another reminder to me to always
make triple sure of logs and to mark things tentative when one is not
100% sure.

Thanks to Ron Howard for his help and guidance in this matter!

560 CANADA, CFOS, Owen Sound, Ontario, heard at 1101 UTC with short
local news, into some international news, full station ID, and
anti-drink-driving PSA and the morning show with Fred and Bob. SINPO
43533 with co-channel QRM. The station is a reduced-power nighttime
operation with 7.5kW/1kW. If the Canadian DOC rules track with the FCC
regulations, then this would have been before local sunrise and
operating at 1kW.

9705 CHINA (*TENT*), Voice of Pujiang, Shanghai, heard at 1347 UTC on
19 December with presumed Mandarin talks by female announcer with short
telephone recordings of a male speaker. Mention of Pujiang at 1348 then
into another announcement by a male, also mentioning Pujiang, then more
from the female announcer, interspersed with a fast-paced music bed and
telephonic announcements by the male. At 1354 there was a bit of music
and then there appeared to be an English lesson, with the English read
by a man and translated by a woman. At 1358 CRI suddenly came on 9700
with an Chinese lesson and the VoA swamped 9705 and Pujiang was lost.
SINPO 35522 until decimated at 1358. Can anyone confirm that Pujiang
does any kind of English lessons? The IDs seemed to fit, but the
English lessons threw me off. This is the only station scheduled here
during this time frame.

11714.8 USA, KJES New Mexico, heard at 1445 UTC on 19 December with
scripture read by female with children answering. SINPO 45533.

15260 CANADA, Polskie Radio via Sackville in Polish heard at 2218 UTC
on 19 December with news and commentary. Only SINPO 45433 and a very
unstable fading condition.

Well, I have to say the Wellbrook loop definitely is much, much better
than my straight 100m longwire. My line noise and other locally
generated junk is down at least 35-40 dB. The loop really was a good
investment and it has paid off with my first logging of Radio Itatiaia!

9335 KOREA, NORTH, Voice of Korea KCBS, heard at 1235 UTC on December

enjoyment of the listening audience. SINPO 45433. This is supposedly
aimed at Latin America, which begs the question of how many people in
Latin America actually speak Korean and listen to this? For a nation
that is so broke, they sure expend a lot of money sending their

gone altogether. Requesting reports to

I am *very* impressed with the noise cancelling and properties and
superior performance of the Wellbrook loop which I just installed
yesterday evening! I can now hear things that were in the dirt and
noise with my previous longwire.

I am hearing a lot of NDBs as well and plan to spend a lot more time on
the tropical, mediumwave and LF bands now.

518	ICELAND, TFK Grindavik Radio, heard at 0354 UTC on 14 November 2011,
in SITOR-B with NAVTEX transmissions in English. Fair signals but very
clear as no one else was operating on freq at the time. This is my
first trans-Atlantic NAVTEX reception! I will be interested to see what
the antenna type and power are if they QSL.

4645 USB	ESTONIA, Tallinn VOLMET, heard early afternoon here at 1924 UTC
on 13 November 2011, with English aviation weather and ILS approach
information. Just barely peaking above the noise and the horrible
interference from French NATO Station FUG on 4644.8 kHz. The QRM was so
extreme, that the station barely was audible even on peaks. FUG runs
NATO STANAG 4285 modulation which sounds a lot like the old multichannel
FSK transmitters, i.e. a roaring plane engine, however this is pure PSK
and about 3.3 kHz wide. I checked on several European remote receivers
and the QRM is just as bad there, which makes me wonder exactly how
effective this station is in providing its service to its intended targets.

Propagation is definitely getting better, as it seems to me that 4645
would definitely be towards the LOF/LUF for that time of day. The
Estonian station is supposed to be a 24/7 operations, so hopefully
others will be able to hear it at their QTH's as well.

1 BRAZIL PPE Time Station. Heard easily under WWV at this QTH on
03 September 2011 at 0040 UTC. Female voice saying Observatoria
Nacional, then time, then three pips before the minute followed by a pip
every ten seconds during the minute. Heard best in USB mode.

I know, I know, nothing special, but it's been a slow week.

HAPPENING NOW

4810 UNID Heard at 2122 UTC on 20 June with two men in English talk,
mentioning lots of factors that have to be considered, very, very
lucky to be here. Decent signal level even after local sunrise here in
Pattaya. Continuous talk in English, but then seem to have slipped into
another language by 2150. Bad static, but without QRM. Still going
strong at 2207 UTC!! One of the guys seemed to have an English accent.
OK, so Armenia does not seem to be scheduled at this time, and no other
Indian stations are on at this time.

Any ideas on this? Couldn't sleep so managed to catch this, and now
it's nagging at me. Probably I'm missing something, but help would be
appreciated.

5030 MALAYSIA Radio Sarawak FM, heard 15 June at 1548 UTC with female
vocal pops and announcements in Bahasa Malaysia by male announcer. Bad
static tonight. Went off-air at 1600 as per schedule. Kinda weak even
for 10kW.

6030 ETHIOPIA Radio Oromiya, heard at 1648 on June 15 with African
music interspersed with male announcer talking, like a news highlights
show with a report by a female announcer. Many Radio Oromiya IDs. Very
strong signal with a somewhat fluttery fade. I've seen it spelled
Oromiya and Orimiya. The announcements sound like Oromiya to me.

6049.67 MALAYSIA, 12 June, 0845 UTC, Radio Asyik, regional service in
vernacular with lots of DJ patter and Malaysian pops. Running a little
off of nominal frequency, but with decent signal level when the band is
otherwise dead.

6175 MALAYSIA, 12 June, 0856 UTC, Suara Islam (Voice of Islam),
regional service in English, heard initially with Arabic-style vocal by
soft-voiced male, when suddenly drums started and there was a bit of pop
music, Arabic-style as well. Kinda catchy. I wonder if this is
Islamic Rock, as opposed to Christian Rock? ID by a female announcer
and time pips on the hour into news read by a female announcer. She got
tripped up over several news items on Indonesia.

6765 USB THAILAND, 12 June, 0907 UTC, Bangkok Meteorological Radio,
with weather forecasts in Thai and English read by a man. These guys
issue a very nice QSL card, so it's well worth the while to make the
effort to log them. They are very friendly and happy to receive reports!

7906 USB VIETNAM, 12 June, 0916 UTC, Ho Chi Minh Radio coastal station.
Maritime weather being read by female announcer in English with
coordinates and thereafter in Vietnamese. Series of beeps at 0920 and
then apparently off-air, to be replaced by another station, which was in
the grass and not identifiable.

6165, TCHAD, 11 June, 1810 UTC, RN Tchadienne, with shouted
announcements in French by male announcer into a five minute drum solo.
Station ID by a woman at 1815, then into talk show with a man in both
French and some Arabic. Seemed to have some vernacular programming
mixed in, although I will admit that my French is execrable. Very good
signal level with some fluttery fades.

9559.79, ETHIOPIA, 11 June, 1713 UTC, Radio Ethiopia external service in
French with lots of African drum music and male vocals and occasional
French announcements. Good signals with slight fade. Apparently
slightly off frequency.

9835, MALAYSIA, 11 June 2011, 1642 UTC, RM Sarawak FM, heard with
call-in show into time pips and full ID in Bahasa Malaysia as news on
the hour. Fair signals and regular fades, so presume I'm catching the
fringe of the signal as it skips over me. Pretty much alone on the freq.

My Afghanistan contract is finally finished after three years (!) and I
am taking a few well-deserved months off. I have had no time for DX'ing
since shortly after New Year, and only have the job to blame for that.
Pattaya is normally an extremely noisy environment, but I managed to
score an apartment on the 11th floor of the View Talay VI building in
Central Pattaya. The noise level is quite tolerable, even if my antenna
is of somewhat limited length.

Mediumwave is suffering a lot of noise, so until I resolve that issue,
there won't be any DX on there!

I am eyeballing a tall tree in the adjacent vacant lot as an anchor
point for a longer antenna, but don't want any kind of trouble, so I
think I'll make a few discrete inquiries first! ;-)

Hope everyone is well.

Anyone else hearing this?

5000 02 JAN, 0150 UTC, ISRAEL, 4XZ, Israeli Navy, Haifa. Banging away
in CW on a time and frequency channel! No sign of BPM or WWVH this
morning. Station was in its normal V marker, then went into 5
digit/letter groups and then back to its V marker now at 0227.

At first I thought I had a spur or an image. Israel is bit too far away
for most of that and I see nothing that can mix to produce this. The
rest of the band is normal and I have no such effect anywhere else. My
rx is not really susceptible to such. I mean, it is dead-on at 5000.

This raises the question, WTF? Bad tx on their end? On purpose? Sure
would make the signal easy to find.

Fairly good signals but fighting a losing battle with China, also in

Thanks for the help Alokesh! The reggae-style music leads me to agree

5025 27 DEC, 0131 UTC, CUBA, Radio Rebelde with latin music and echo
announcements. verified by streaming audio. Very weak at the time I
caught it. I will try to get up earlier tomorrow and see if the signal
is stronger. Two positive Rebelde IDs.

Radio Habana also coming in on 5040 which is supposedly beamed towards
North America. Much better signal on this frequency.

5045 27 DEC, 0156 UTC, BRAZIL, Radio Cultura do Para, heard in
Portuguese with some Brazilian pops into a full ID by a male announcer
at 0159, several commercial announcements and then news read by a woman
(or a very light-voiced man). Fair signal level with some UTE QRM and a
slow fade

Haji sent his love and Season's Greetings on Xmas night and last night.
One of the rockets hit a contractor compound and killed a person on
Xmas night. The rocket last night was very close as it rocked our

Very nice openings to the Caribbean and South America the last couple of

4830, 25 DEC, 0058 UTC, MONGOLIA, Mongolian R., in Mongol, and kickin'

Great signals with a slight fade. Time pips and beautiful full ID on

4844, 25 DEC, 0106 UTC, INDIA, AIR Mumbai (tent.) in Hindi with
subcontinental music and long talks by male announcer. Off of nominal

a carrier on 4845.

4880, 25 DEC, 0112 UTC, INDIA, AIR Lucknow in Hindi with subcontinental
music. Local level signals, but horrible, tinny modulation without any
real depth to it.

4885, 25 DEC, 0115 UTC, BRAZIL, Radio Clube do Para in Portuguese with
romantic songs and some RB. Beautiful, echo and full ID at 0128.
Strong signals, no QRM, but fluttery. Incredible! This is quite the
Xmas present. 7686 miles away! Supposedly only 2kW?

4895, 25 DEC, 0146 UTC, MONGOLIA, Mongolian Radio 2nd Channel, rockin'
out for Xmas. Very haunting melody and music, and such good quality
that it was actually a pleasure to listen to. Great signals with a
slight fade.

Well, a very merry Christmas to all! This is the first breather I have
had in two months and I closed the office today, so I could do some
DXing. I'm glad I did. It hasn't all been a joyous Holiday season tho
as my mom is currently in hospital for a rather serious infection in her
artificial knee. I hope all of you out there are doing much better than
this!

The knob-ends in the compound across our alley here have somehow
converted a spark-gap transmitter into a power generator and they are
blissfully destroying mediumwave and low-band DX for me. All appeals
have fallen on deaf ears, so I guess they need some sugar in the fuel
tank...

Last night an international group of military officers got it into their
small heads that somehow it might be a cool idea to go around base
caroling. As Project Manager, I am also responsible for the compound
and its security and their horrible screeching and jodeling combined to
form a new doric scale, frightening my staff. I went out on my doorstep
and held up a finger and they mistook that for a request for one more
carol. The must have misidentified which finger I held up.

Christmas meal is being served at the UK Cambridge Lines today and I am
looking forward to the pomp and circumstance. Civilians are allowed
between 1130-1230 (which, really, is kind of rushed for a Christmas
meal). Hopefully I can find some outlaw alcohol somewhere on the base
later, but I think mostly I'll be drinking coffee and diet coke and DXing.

I'll check in more during the day as the DX rolls in. Just wanted to
post these off and say hello!

About ten seconds after the transmitter left the air, the BBC came up in
French. Excellent signals from Samara, Russia with no QRM and some
minor fading.

11730 18 NOV, 1730 UTC, PHILIPPINES, Radio Pilipinas in Tagalog with
male announcer reading news headlines. EIBI says this should be English
and AOKI doesn't list it. Great. Powerhouse signal with no QRM and
minimal fading.

11760 18 NOV, 1616 UTC, CLAN, Voice of Oromiyo Revolution with east
African music and long-winded rants by a man. Good signals and no QRM.

strength and no QRM to speak of. CNRI must not have discovered this
frequency yet.

7200 16 NOV, 1525 UTC, SUDAN, Sudan RTVC, Heard with man in Arabic
talks with many mentions of Sudan. Fair signal, but beat up by CNRI on
7205 with a 20kHz occupied bandwidth. Sure wish the Chinese would get
it together on splatter and occupied bandwidth...

A light night of DX'ing. I was also listening on 7120 kHz and it seemed
like Voice of the Broad Masses Program 1 was active there judging by the
languages, but Chad also shares the frequency. I did not hear any
French in over three hours of monitoring, but I kept hearing what I
thought was N'Djamena, but might also have been Eritrea. Signal not
as good as 7175 if indeed it was Eritrea.
