A fascinating look back 60 years ago to 1953 and the radio stations that could be heard from the Philippines has just been released by the Radio Heritage Foundation at www.radioheritage.com. You'll find a complete list of stations along the dial on both mediumwave [AM] and shortwave [SW]. In fact, most of the stations were only on shortwave. There was no FM. Only a handful of stations were outside Manila. There was a strong American influence, with two large relay bases for the Voice of America and several US Armed Forces Radio Service stations around Manila. This was a period less than 10 years after the end of WWII when broadcasting was in its post-war recovery phase. In 1953, the first TV station in the Philippines had just gone to air [DZAQ-TV] and a new president [Magsaysay] inaugurated. The Korean War ended in the middle of the year. Retro Radio Dial Philippines 1953 is the latest of a new series exploring the global radio dials at important times during the last century. The Cold War was in full swing in this region.
