That's a nice write up thanks.

That enclosure however only supports up to 250GB though :-( Newegg have
a lot of enclosures and I think that FAQ gives me enough info on the
chipsets to make a semi informed decision.

Thanks

I have found this helpful:
The official external ENCLOSURE thread
http://www.fatwallet.com/t/28/496281

I just bought this for a client from www.ZipZoomFly.com (isn't that a
stupid name?).
http://www.apricorn.com/product_details.php?ID=332
http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/ProductDetail.jsp?ProductCode=103007

It had a rebate that went out on 8/31.

Hi,

I need to get an external enclosure for a 500GB drive. I haven't got the
drive yet so it could be IDE or SATA I'm flexible. I do prefer not to
have an external power supply but that's not a hard constraint.

Any recommendations?

Thanks in advance,

Gary Hunter

I just checked mine. 8080, 443 (SSL), or a custom port is what you could
use. WRV54G here. Piece of crap, if anybody wants one...

I beg to differ, Ben. I have several customers with Linksys routers (different models) as long as you set remote administration to
enable select port 8080, you can access the router from the outside thru your browser by typing in the IP addy:8080. This setting is
under Remote Gateway Access under the Administration tab on my Linksys. It is slightly different areas on others.

I'll second that in addition to Telnet and/or SSH
access on the
WRT54G/GS's if enabled.

Yeah, if you intend to leave them on 24/7. If you only have it on
during use, no fan can work.

Re: [H] External HDD recommendations

2006-09-11 Thread Harry McGregor

I disagree with this...

I tend to like the no-fan external HD setups, as long as they are a
direct contact aluminum case. I have over a half dozen deployed without
issues, including one attached to a co-loed server to data backups
(remote backups to the drive from outside the co-lo). 64F in the room,
and the hard disk is running just fine.

I have used these ones mostly (and the FW version)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817146306

I look at it this way, it might not be quite as good at cooling as one
with a working fan, but it's far better than one with a dead fan. Most
of the ones with fans use tiny 40mm fans that die quickly around here
(very dry in Tucson Az). I would rather deal with a slight cooling
issue the entire life of the drive instead of a major cooling issue
after 6 months or so.

the ones I have with a tight fitting AL case get quite hot when left
running...

Re: [H] External HDD recommendations

2006-09-11 Thread j maccraw
All I know is that both my 7200 RPM drives would go
offline randomly and
were extremely hot to the touch when running in
Speedzter 3 enclosures
which are aluminum. Open the cases or set them,
sealed, in airflow from
a 80mm fan, all was well.

For the past 2 years I have been blaming MS Firewire
support until I ran
both off a USB 2.0 controller with the same Delayed
Write Failure
resulting from drive dying and going offline. Of
course SMART does not
work through USB so I can't read the running temps.

Personally I think the heat affected the bridge boards
worse because
both drives work fine outside those cases, one drive
even works in the
Speedzter case if I leave the cover off, and one
bridge board has
definitely given up the ghost since no drives spin up
attached to it.

YMMV but I will look for better cooling/bigger case
(hence the addonics
enclosure) or use 5400 RPM drives next time.

How long a run? I've been running an 80GB 7200 for over a year with
no problems thus far. (I test it about once a month.)

I bought 2 speedzter cases 7200RPM maxtors in 2003,
started screwing
up after the 1st year via firewire. A few months ago I
attached them to
a GX260 via USB and had the same problems. One is
dead, the other works
via USB as long I leave cover off, dunno about
firewire side.

On the other hand my ADSTech 5.24 case w/ fan has
kept that drive happy
via USB though the fan has started to randomly buzz
last few months.
Easy enough to swap fan in the end.

all of a sudden my 10/100 router (netgear fvs318v3) is only showing 10mb

weird, this is a new modem ( v3 to replace my v1 )
