[H] Swaping processors
In the process of building a new pc. - To start with, I will use my old Pentium 2.53 ghz processor. I will replace that in April when Intel drops their prices. The old processor is single core, I will replace that with either the dual or quad core. It used to be that if you were going from a single processor to dual that you had to re-install the OS as it would not properly recognize the second cpu. This new machine will run both XP and Vista - will I have to do fresh installs with the new processor, or can I just pop the new processor in and be off to the races? Thanks Bob

I can’t confirm this 100% but I think that you should be okay with the swap. Just pop it in, reboot and everything should be……….faster…. The 975 Chipset motherboards (with the new revisions) support single core, hyperthreading, dual core and quad core processors. All those processors are based on the LGA 775 socket, so only BIOS/Chipset support is required. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Anthony Q. As does 965, NV 680i, RD600, and even some 945's (not QC). That is not to say that any LGA775 chip will work on any LGA775 motherboard. RE: [H] Swaping processors
If your 2.53 has hyperthreading as is enabled, you'll already have the MP HAL installed. Even if it isn't, XP (and presumably Vista) can pick up the change without a reinstall. I still prefer to do a clean slate install, but it isn't required. Ok...I just want to make sure I understand you guys. You're basically saying that I can go buy a new mobo that has PCI-X for graphics that I can drop my P4 3.0 GHz CPU into and then later upgrade that puppy to dual/quad core? I'd have to upgrade both memory, graphics card, and PS right? Only memory at first, though, right? I'm asking because i'm starting to get a little tired of sucking so much hind tit, these days. RE: [H] Swaping processors
Yes, provided that you buy a mobo based on the 965, 680i, RD600, or later 975 rev chipsets, and your current proc is LGA775 and not s478. You almost certainly keep your PS. Memory and graphics would need upgraded immediately. Also, PCIe is the shorthand used for PCI Express...PCI-X refers to something quite different. :) Greg -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:hardware- [EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Anthony Q. However, I need my upgrades to be very, very meaningful, or such I say impactful. Not unless your current CPU is a S-478, in which you're kinda SOL since the Socket 478 PCI-E mobos aren't all that great. A nice go between mobo would be the Asrock 775 VSTA, which takes an LGA775 CPU (both P4s and Core 2s) and gives you the flexibility of AGP + PCI-E, DDR + DDR2. It won't overclock quite as well as say an eVGA 680i or a Gigabyte DS3, but people seem to like it. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16813157092 So I guess you could say no the memory and graphics upgrades. What PSU do you have currently? If it's a 20-pin with a strong 12V rail, you should be alright since you can get MOLEX - 6-pin PCI-E adapters to sate a more power hungry PCI- E card and most 24-pin mobos don't mind running with just 20-pins. You'll have to watch out for PCI-E graphics cards that don't have a separate power connector though, since they'll try to suck power from the unconnected 4 ATX pins. I guess one last thing would be that it might be beneficial to dump your older RAM now before RAM prices start to dip even further. I did exactly that in Dec and got top dollar for my Crucial DDR400 - switched to Kingston DDR2-667. Hope this helps :) -- Jin-Wei Tioh Without C, there'd be BASI, PASAL, and OBOL
RE: [H] Swaping processors
I had a 300x series PCI-e ATI video card when my Epox died. So at this stage I just had to buy memory and the board. Even though the board I bought was pricey, I bought the open box version, which from Newegg saved me $55.32. All the gadgets (100% were in the box) so if it boots I'm gold. Buying from Newegg was the only reason I went with an open box as I have never had 1 issue rma'ing anything with them. In fact not one package of wire, cables, 1000 other parts had been opened. Either someone refused shipment or cracked the lid, saw 1000 parts and figured they were over their head and returned it. Upon close inspection not one part had been opened from its original packing, not even the motherboard. So for me, this purchase should have me set up for quite some time. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Anthony Q. I sure there are some others out here that are wondering the same thing that I am. What MB did you buy that 1000 parts? Are you soldering the board yourself like a do-it-yourselfer?
