Re: [H] VISTA Ultimate

2007-02-25 Thread FORC5
I'm using Vista Ultimate on my server only, does a decent job. FTP runs OK.
Does it's job well.
My only main complaint is I do have SW on my main box I do not care to loose so
putting it there for now is not a option. I have not run MS's diagnostic yet
though. Some of this stuff may work if I do a upgrade but I would prefer a
clean but then the problems with some of my sw would surface.
FWIW the first release was more of a hog then the final release which seems to
adjust itself. My server is only a 2400 Barton with 1 gb of ram and a fx5900
video card and it runs fine.
Only have Vista Business final so I will have to clean install my server which
is still RC2. In all their wisdom that is what MS sent me.

I just installed VISTA Ultimate on my computer.

My computer is a very simple i945G chipset based mobo with Pentium D 805 @
3.66Ghz and 2 GB of RAM.

Vista runs fairly smooth, and surprisingly Aero Glass is enabled on the
integrated graphics card.

I must say that VISTA really does feel like XP with a thick layer of makeup
on. However, I can feel the difference in the new TCP/IP stack. All my
torrents are going much faster and also my network copies are going more
smoother.

Flip3D is super lame compared to Expose' but still better than nothing.
Instant search is a godsend!! Using spotlight on the mac really made me miss
it on the PC side.

Overall I really do think that VISTA is too much of a hog for what it is, I
think OSX is better but that's more subjective.

But as far as MS is concerned, they have done a decent job of a new release.

All my drivers and such work fine and I have faced no problems, so far, but
then again, I really haven't stressed the system too much as such.

Regards,

Anyone played around with this? I am using it to serve my HTPC
content over my LAN because it does a great job but I am having some
trouble with configuration, specifically the nodes for navigation of
video files.

They recently released v4.1 which is great but it changed some things
and the manual pretty much sucks.

Is there any kind of web site that lists Vista supported legacy
software. I figure sooner or later somebody is going to start
 compiling one of these.

And I'm one of the unlucky ones totally unable to run Outlook 2007 in Vista
Ultimate, It crashes within 10 seconds of opening. Even with all the evil
add-ins disabled.. I have Google's this thing to death without an answer.. And
though I may be in the minority, I'm not alone with this issue.. Clean install
all the way around, by the way...

[H] Sharing MP3 files online

2007-02-25 Thread Veech
What do you folks recommend as an easy and free way to post MP3 files
online, which can be opened and listened to by anyone else? I'm looking
for a way where I send a link and other people can click on it and it plays
automatically in Windows Media Player or whatever. Yousendit requires that
you download the file, I just want it to open and play...

thanks..

No. Aero Glass is an all-or-nothing feature. Time to replace that AIW...I
decided a long time ago that I'll never use an integrated video+capture
solution again. :)

Unfortunately, no support for All in Wonder so I doubt I will be
switching any time soon. One thing I would like to know is if you
are using a Aero supported video card on a primary monitor and a old
unsupported PCI card on the secondary monitor , will Vista still
 support Aero on the primary?

So both video cards would have to support Aero, which means, of
course, that no PCI video cards are capable of supporting Aero

yes, but there are so many unsupported things about Vista, that
matter to me, that I am not in a big hurry to switch to Vista. But I
do want to buy a 30 inch monitor, and for that I need to upgrade the
video card.

[H] Connecting a DVD changer to HTPC?

2007-02-25 Thread Brian Weeden

Anyone experimented with this? A possible alternative to several TB
of HD space would be to get something like this:

http://www.pricegrabber.com/search_techspecs_full.php/masterid=9723273/

The question would be, how would one connect it to the software in the
HTPC so you could browse and select a disc to play?

BTW, I am using Meedio for my HTPC software. MCE wasn't configurable
enough for me and I use DirecTV so I don' need any timeshifting,
recording, or real time TV viewing.
