[H] New AGP video card
I have a dual 3.56 dual Xeon that I am not going to upgrade any time soon. However, it has a AGP 8 slot in it that currently is using a All in Wonder 800XT. The TV tuner quality is so poor it is worthless. It does allow me to capture from my digital cable modem, and that quality is very good. I am not a gamer, but I would like a Dell 30 inch monitor. For that I will need a different video card. Then I will probably try a Haupage 350 as the TV turner unless somebody can recommend something better. HD turner is out of the question for me because there is no over the air broadcasts...reception is pretty much non existent outside of the local station. I thought I would start looking for the best ATI or Nivida AGP card available, in as it will be my last upgrade to this Xeon PC. I understand that would be either a 7600GS or a ATI X1950. The X1650Pro would be sufficient. All you need is one dual-link TMDS transmitter and one single-link TMDS transmitter (for a 30 WQXGA and a simultaneous lesser monitor). I'm pretty sure that all 1650's are at least one dual and one single, but I know some are dual dual-link. The chip is fast enough to play some games, but it would be slower than your X800XT. Unlike your x800xt though, it is a Shader Model 3.0 part. If you aren't interested in major gaming, no point in spending any more cash. I went for the x1650Pro in my HTPC. [H] Video card voltage/amps ?
Have a AGP GF 7800gs that says it needs 20 amps on the 12 volt. ( at least 400 watt ) I see no PSU's with this many amps on one 12 volt line. Are they talking about total amps ? Particular card was hooked up to a 500 watt Thermaltake claiming 17 amps on 12 volt. It died and took the MB as collateral damage. Was it not enough amps ? Replaced the Thermaltake with a Antec ( 19/17 amps on 12 volt ) is it enough ? or is the card talking about total 12 volt amps ? Need to know b4 this thing gets fired back up. It's a total system recommendation. The 7800GS doesn't require anywhere near that (20*12=240W) amount. Hell, even the 8800GTX doesn't pull that much. By the way, kind of a tangent...the ATX power supply spec has been revised such that a 12 volt rail no longer must be limited to 18 amps. It's just UL listed in a different class now. About damn time, 4 +12v rails was getting idiotic. Indeed, some of the power supplies on the market now that are labeled with multiple 12v rails are in fact tied to the exact same internal output. The chip is fast enough to play some games, but it would be slower than your X800XT. Really?!? I am really surprised. My AIW 800XT card is 17 months old. I don't know if I want to get something that is slower then my AIW. I think I would rather pay the extra money and get the X1950PRO, since I will be keeping this for a while. Thanks for telling me.
