[H] looking for a motion controlled security camera.. quick!

2007-07-06 Thread Veech
Thisis a last minute thing that has come up, I need a solution as soon as
possible, i.e. something available at Best Buy, Circuit City or Fry's.

I'm looking for a security camera that can be mounted remotely, is motion
sensored and can send data to a PC or recording device such as a DVR when it
detects motion.

We are on vacation for 10 days and I need something such as this for inside
the house.

Any suggestions?

I doubt you'll find anything worth a damn for any quality thwre. Get a real
bnc type varifocus camera with ir and weather proofed and a decent 60fps or so
dvr.

Management usually doesn't fare so well in these types of situations. What
kind of info you are looking for, tips on what?

I'm a one man band - essentially they are buying me - I would come
work for them... just never been in this situation before and I don't
even know where to begin - even with what tips I need...

I know, not much help...

[H] external drive enclosures ?

2007-07-06 Thread FORC5
Have a customer with those stupid little Dell cases so I set her up with a
external drive enclosure with a drive for backup with System Guardian.

Enclosure failed, has to go 24/7

any recommendations of something that can take the pressure appreciated. The
one I used was cheap, probably not the best solution. :'(

Well I just was in the position of needed an external
3.5 case so I
searched and agonized, finally choosing to get a
IcyDock a AMS Venus
DS3. I tested the no-fan Icy first and found it ran
40C under continous
disk usage for hours so I put the unopened fan equiped
DS3 up on eBay.

Would recommend either brand, with emphasis on the Icy
since it's got a
removable tray that can be docked into a mutli-drive
PC bay made by
them. These were SATA to SATA+USB cases but they also
make IDE models
and ones that are Firewire+USB.

About $50+SH from NewEgg and elsewhere.

Hello Wayne,

you're the only one that can decide. They'll probably make you an offer
 then think about it.

So, it's best to let them make the offer? Is it possible they would
want to see my books to base their offer? God, I hope not. Ideally, I
would like to get all our debts paid off and have some cash at the
end. We've been paying into our mortgage (which is also where the
business resides) so much so that out 30 year loan would be paid off
in 7 years. We have 3 years left at that... IIRC. Then there are my
student loans...

Also another consideration is what if any benefits does the potential new
place offer. How much would it cost you to buy those for yourself ? You
then have to add that to their monetary offer.

Yeah and benefits are one of the main reasons I am even considering
this at all. I would like salary, benefits, and retirement.

Sorry but the largest /or riskiest moves make for the hardest decision
 making processes.

That ain't no shit.

OK, here's the story. I've been with this company as a customer for
years. When they were just a little thing, I got on board with them.
For many years, I encouraged them to bring services to my town.
Finally, I got frustrated and started to look elsewhere. I got a deal
that I was going to bring in and as soon as I did, they made the move
here. I just dropped my plans and let them take the show. I supported
them publicly and privately. I did some outside work for them here and
there and it ALWAYS went well.

Now, I see just from the size - they
are taking my customers from me. So, I contact the big bosses I know
and tell them - hey, I have been with you guys through thick and thin.
Now, I am seeing my profits fall and my clients going to you. While
this isn't deliberate - it's still happening. No sooner do I contact
them about all this but I hear through the grape vine they are going
to do a geek squad type thing. Two things, this would really screw
me but this may be my opportunity to get with them.

Now some background. The guy I am dealing with... he had made me a
verbal promise that he would allow me to provide product and services
when they came into town - it never happened. I never went to bat
about it - I just held my tongue. Even further back, they were having
some issues with services which I was the first to figure out and
discover. I talked to them about it but they sand bagged on it and
finally I told them if you don't take action, I will by informing
everyone of this issue. They took care of it. Last but not least, I
managed to successfully penetrate their network and I left little txt
files on some bosses desktops for them to read, and how to fix the
issues / holes they had left open. Now, this was almost a decade ago.

That's the situation in a nutshell. Oh except the guy I am dealing
with and some other big wigs, I used to smash them in Quake 2 on my
dial up - while they connected to the Q2 server from the LAN. LOL.
True story. I raped them. Mind you, I was never cocky about it but I
was ruthless. Wife says not to sweat the Q2 thing but I know the guy I
will be working with got pissed about it and quit playing.

There have been times when they had issues and I helped them resolve
them. I spent a day on the phone running tests for them on my end,
never asked for a thing - this was only a few months ago. I was just glad to
help.

It's been a mixed and sorted past, but all the negative stuff was
mainly a long time ago. I wouldn't mind working for them. I just don't
want to screw myself and regret it.
