Re: [H] Acer to buy Gateway
It's a funny world when Acer can make things better. I still remember them when they were extreme bottom of the barrel crap. I had a 5x CD-ROM from them (probably 5x because it wasn't able to reliably do 6x.) DHSinclair wrote: Just heard on npr that Acer plans to buy Gateway Comp. Hmm, more consolidation. RE: [H] Acer to buy Gateway
Do Gateway actually build their own systems? What's the chances that Acer manufacture at least some of Gateways range anyway? Acer and Asus are pretty huge, but don't really have much of a name for themselves outside of the tech community. Both of them want to become more mainstream and not just build for others. A bit like Lenovo. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of DHSinclair Sent: 27 August 2007 13:32 To: Hardware Group Subject: [H] Acer to buy Gateway Just heard on npr that Acer plans to buy Gateway Comp. Re: [H] Acer to buy Gateway
We have several of their widescreen LCD's at work. They're OK - not great - and not something I'd get excited about except over price. The stands are junk. All of my developers who have Acer monitors have to stuff a few O'Reilly books underneath them to get them to a comfortable viewing height. [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I thought the same a while back. You didn't create a stream account when you 1st installed? You shouldn't need anything more than that to install w/o the CD over the internet. zaske wrote: I bought HalfLife2 from Walmart for $40 and my 4 month old WD hardrive died. Re: [H] Better Vidcard for Old System?
It's a good card as is the XT version, both are ~$200 and dead end AGP. Not much of an improvement over 9800pro unless you're going to use it for a few years. Re: [H] The Disaster that is BioShock
If I recall correctly you can't play the game without a Steam account to validate and activate it. When my hardrive died and I replaced it when I reinstalled the game with my legitimate CD key Steam complained saying my key was already in use. This is with the same Steam account. My best guess is that Steam had something on my former hardrive that was missing @ that point and that I was trying to rip them off. Oh course, all of this may have changed in the last couple years. I ended up giving it away to a young man @ work who wanted to play Counterstrike with some friends. j maccraw wrote: You didn't create a stream account when you 1st installed? Re: [H] The Disaster that is BioShock
wow, I installed Bioshock without a hiccup on the XP system you built for me Chris. It runs beautifully with almost all the settings maxed out. I have AVG, AdAware and Spybot, and have not had a single issue yet. That's not to say it won't happen but at this point Bioshock is a visually beautiful and extremely immersive gaming experience and one that hasn't created a single problem for me so far other than getting toasted by the bad guys because I'm too busy gawking at the pretty stuff. - Original Message - From: CW [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: hardware@hardwaregroup.com Sent: Saturday, August 25, 2007 2:21 PM Subject: [H] The Disaster that is BioShock Thank goodness someone else had these thoughts and put them to pen: http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=41921 Let me add what is not in the above: Running Vista 64 bit? Prepare for wild, uncontrollable crashes at random. Have K-Lite or other CODEC packs installed? Good luck avoiding blue screens. Run AVG Antispyware or Ad-Aware 2007? Prepare for the software to not run. What garbage

Date: Sat, 25 Aug 2007 10:14:51 -0400 Ok...I know my PC is getting old.since I don't play games, I've been forcing myself to stay off the upgrade curve so much...I'm still running a Pentium 4 @ 3.06 GHz with 2 GB ram and plenty of HD space. I have an ATI Radeon 9800 Pro AGP driving the displays. I just added a second Samsumg 204B and I'm running both at 1600 x 1200. XPSP2 is the O/S. Questions: 1) Is there a better vidcard for this system for 2D? It needs to be AGP. If you do not play games, integrated video is all you need, much less a 9000 series ATI. Comment: I'm not playing any games these days (not that I wouldn't like to). 2) Also, for mostly office work (I do manipulate graphics), should I really consider upgrading this machine? Unless it's in the realm of 3d, no. Comment: I do like new, but I like to get some real-world bang for my buck. Just knowing I have the latest and greatest ain't good enough any more. Then dont bother, you are set :) Comment: Seems like Vista would just nullify any gains I'd get from an upgrade. Thanks. _ See what youre getting into before you go there http://newlivehotmail.com/?ocid=TXT_TAGHM_migration_HM_viral_preview_0507
