Re: [H] another recommendation

2008-04-18 Thread Hayes Elkins

Both systems will do fine with a 3-series chipset board with an E8400 (~$200).
I recommend intel retail desktop boards. Your 2nd system as described (dealing
only in 2D imaging) needs nothing more than integrated graphics as far as
speed, but you'll want a digital output so I would recommend intel's DG33TL
(~$120) with integrated GMA 3100 graphics and DVI output. Trust me, you DO NOT
need any add-on PCIe GPU. Throw in 2GB of JDEC spec DDR2 (~$50) and a 74GB
Raptor (~$140) and you have a screaming system for general I/O just north of
$500.

I recommend an intel-based rig because a) nothing tops the price performance of
the new 45nm core 2 duo's and b) the ICH9R RAID is a superior performing RAID
southbridge when compared to nvidia's and amd/ati's current southbridges.

 Subject: [H] another recommendation

 Hi all,

 Need to build 2 systems.

 1. Strictly business. Don't need fancy graphics, or sound, so onboard
video/sound is fine. (I will up the RAM) Dual HDD that are Raid Mirrors are
 needed.

 2. System 2 can be almost like the one above, but needs a better video card.
My wife is a Medical Transcriptionist. This will be her work system and her
playing with digital pics system. I want dual hdd, and a raid mirror on
this as well. I have a Raptor SATA drive that I am going to put in along with
another Raptor of same size. Speed is important to her as she is paid on
 production.

Both systems will be using 19 inch basic flat screen monitors. Both systems
will be running XP. System 2 will be XP Pro. (Hospital requirement) and a
medical version of Word. Speed is important here, but nothing that has to be
ripping fast. (also, as the hospital upgrades she needs to be at least close,
so at least dual core if not quad if I can swing it)

1st system will be running XP home. So XP drivers for both systems will be
 important.

Both systems will be on networks. System 1 wireless and system 2 wired.

I have looked on Tiger and Geeks and haven't quite seen what I need. Budget
is 800 for system 1, though I can go to 1k if needed. About 1000 - 1400 for
 system 2.

 Any and all help appreciated.

BTW, I have the legit copies of XP so that doesn't have to be part of the
expense. And, I can put my own systems together, so individual components, if
a better deal, is not a problem.

 Thanks all,

 Harvey

JoeUser,
Understand. But, for me it is cheaper to use my local sources. I save on
shipping costs.
And as far as I can tell these commercial replacements are of equal quality
of the APC
replacement batteries. I now use the PowerSonic gel cells and the Yuasa
Genesis AGM

cells. The original APC cells lasted 3-4 years. Time will tell of course.
Oddly, I also have a Belkin 350VA Gold ups whose single 12v cell just
failed recently. It

lasted ~7 years of pretty constant use.

Whoops should have read this post first. I buy my batteries at
provantage or directly from APC and I buy APC batteries. It does seem
to make a difference in how long they last. Like no name brand
lasting 2 years and APC lasting 3. YMMV. Make sure you send the old
battery back for recycling.

True, batteries are heavy as hell and soak up shipping charges, so if
I could get mine locally I would. I'm going to give Battery Mart a
try, only thing is I won't be able to say anything good about them
for 3 years. 8)

Re: [H] UPSes

2008-04-18 Thread Al

Just wanted to offer; when the batteries in a couple of my APC UPS's
went out, I just happened to have a couple of very large deep cycle RV
batteries. They have been working fine as substitutes for well over a
year. And my power-out run time is measured in hours, not minutes. ;-)

If I had a very lengthy power out and wasn't around to shutdown the
computers; I would probably recharge then with my auto battery charger,
rather than ask the APC units to do it.

[H] Nice Case Mid Size Tower

2008-04-18 Thread Al

I've been looking at getting some new cases. Came across this one and
liked it. Thought I'd share:

http://www.pro-clockers.com/review.php?id=276page=1

Nice finish inside and out. Lots of room for a mid size. No POS power
supply to deal with. Oh and wheels :-)

From the review:
The Power Bar power distribution system eliminates cable clutter inside
your case by giving you easy access to 4-pin peripheral and 8-pin PCI-e
power connectors in a more convenient location.

A little expensive but I think worth it.

Regards,
Al

Thanks Al,
Looking for something to replace a very old, heavy, In-Win Tower.
Will re-read the review a few times to make sure it may support an
old full-size ATX m/b... :)
Like the wheels!

Re: [H] another recommendation

My choices:

Asus Rampage (X48 vs. X38, forget AMD 680/780)
Intel E6550 (core2) or Q6600 (core2Q)
Thermaltake *toughpower* 750W PSU (or OCZ,
Silverstone, CWT, Seasonic)
Thermaltake Armor case
2 (1024x2) or 4GB (2048x2) RAM DDR2-800 because it's
cheap right now XP will use
3GB for sure.
Graphics? anything ATI = X1950 or Nvidia = 7800
(forget future SLI upgrades since
Nvidia too stupid to allow support on an Intel
chipset.)

Why? Supports the fastest DDR2 RAM for the $$$,
handles all Intel CPU's (it's X48),
won't become obsolete in 2 years IMHO, allows for
upgrades.

Look for deals/rebates and you could build core box
for $1000 sans HDD, CD/DVD, new
KB, etc

Chris on the other hand will have you buying some AM2+
jobbie in a ultra case w/
ultra branded PSU. Just poking Chris! =)
