Hey Lopaka!
I'm not sure how much that PC would cost at Best Buy, but take a look at
ecost.com before you buy it. They have some great deals over there
generally!

Take care,

I need to address this office PC situation quickly as the Windows on
here is hosed. This AMD ought to be good for non-gaming, non-HD

One advantage is with 4 cores I can run parallel matlab on 64-bit

My gamer headphones are very cheap, my hearing not so good and I can
easily tell direction from the sounds L4D 2 Zombies make. Simple to frag
them when I can hear them coming and pay attention..

Thanks for the reply Fred; yeah headphones get into a whole 'nother realm of
crazy (like my friend who spent $5k on his headphone listening "system" b/c
he didn't have the place or money to build a proper listening room and deck
it out with the speakers he would want for that! :P), but I also like having
5.1 for games and stuff...

What have other folks out there done for computer speaker systems? Just
bought the rather expensive Logitechs or just eschewn the whole 5.1 category
and gone 2 or 2.1 like PC Mag was saying (which I still find hard to
believe! :P)?

RIP on the sub

FWIW I use headphones for games and basically hardly ever use the speakers.
Mine are old, think 4.1 even.>:-o Doing that 2 channel ought to be fine.
Headphone are great, sound is fantastic and doesn't bother the family 8-) (
if sleeping or watching TV )

Mine are USB. (Plantronics) Would not mind going wireless.

In the meantime I got a pair of the M-Audio Studiophile AV 40 speakers on
sale at Amazon for $99-which seems like a great deal. They sound awesome
but they're only 2-channels and I'm not sure I don't want to get 5.1 for
gaming and stuff.so just wondering what thoughts people might have as to

how

to solve my dilemma (possibly come up with a configuration that uses the 5
speakers I have now that're still good with my computer)?

Winterlight,
I suspect you may be playing the same game I am.
I'd suspect your psu or your m/b finally died. I've seen this twice this
year via other circumstances.. I don't drive video.

I see another Viking Funeral in the offing.

Though both of us like Matrox; even our old Matrox cards do die eventually!
Really SUX; but it really does happen.

The funny part is that my "old" machines are so less spectacular than
your collection. With some thoughtful TLC, that puppy should do another
5-10 years. :)

In the end; Stuff happens. Hmm
Best,
Duncan

I was running it with the TV on and all of a sudden, without any

computer was still powered on but nothing on the screen.

First I powered off at the cord, waited a bit and then powered up again.
Nothing appeared on the screen. Tried this numerous times after checking
cable connections.

Then I hooked up my laptop to the VGA cable... the monitor worked.

Then, leaving the AGP AIW 9600 PRO in place I put a known working Matrox
PCI G450. Still no video appears... even at POST.

But it will boot up to XP PRO and I can access all the hard drives
across the network. Just no video

It is very strange but I am thinking PS. The Antec True Power is
problematic and the problem is a strange one, as are most PS problems.
I put a meter on a powered up molex and got 5 on the red and 11.94 on
the yellow. Any thoughts?

Bobby,
I like the DLink DGL-4300 that I use ATM.
It is costly.. :(
Am thinking about an update to the DGL-4500, however.
Has been a no-problem router for the past 6 years.
Best,

Could be power supply or even mobo components going out. I've had similar
happen where some board component went out first, then eventually board died
completely. Power supply is easy enough to check if you have a spare.

[H] AMD Athlon™ II X4 Quad-Core Processor-base d PC

2009-12-11 Thread Anthony Q. Martin
I'm thinking of buying an off-the shelf PC for my office needs. I don't
have big needs there, but I want to get my stuff moved over quick.

I see Best Buy has an HP with this AMD Athlon™ II X4 Quad-Core Processor
inside. Runs at 2.7 GHz. Boy...this seems like a down grade of sorts,
as I'm running a P4 at 3.6 GHz now. But this HP has 6 GB ram and comes
with 64-bit Win7 home premium. That ought to be worth something, right?

I could reformat and load Win7 on this machine, but I'm then limited to
32-bit windows and thus can't even address extra memory. And no Win XP
mode, either.

I need to address this office PC situation quickly as the Windows on
here is hosed. This AMD ought to be good for non-gaming, non-HD moving
making, but perhaps heavy multitasking and probably running Matlab, right?
One advantage is with 4 cores I can run parallel matlab on 64-bit
windows and actually used the extra RAM. So that seems like a big plus.
Is the AMD a number-crunching pig compared to an Intel Quad Core?
