Re: [H] Router recommendations?

2009-12-14 Thread Naushad Zulfiqar
Been using the WNDR3700 for a day now and so far so good.

I love the fact that it has dual 5Ghz radio's. And I can set up a guest
SSID for each. Seperate the Guest SSID so it does not see my local
network. It also is quite fast and handles torrents very well. Furthermore
the router looks cool also!

I will issue a final verdict after a month, but so far so good.

Big improvement over the trendnet router that I previously had.

Re: [H] Freeze up

2009-12-14 Thread Robert Martin Jr.
I've had this happen a few times from poweroutage, no UPS backup, etc.
Sometimes you can fix this running BootCD utilities and it's easiest if you can
roll back to a previous restore point (if you have this enabled on the affected
computer). Normally my order of attempts would be

1) choose boot option for previous known good settings (works occasionally)
2) boot safe mode and run chkdsk /f on any available HDD's (usually you'll get
same error in safe mode)
3) bootcd (Hirens is what I use, or BART) and check HDD/files for errors using
utilities and chkdsk
4) use system restore using old restore point (also from Hirens mini-xp mode)
5) use install cd for XP to do system repair install

Sam,
From what I read, your wife downloaded something (?wow64?) that may
require 64-bit processing. W2K, IIRC, only does 32-bit anything.
You may need to dig down and get rid of what she last downloaded and
tried to run/launch. That is all I can see for now.

Best,
Duncan

WoW64 (Windows-on-Windows 64-bit) is a subsystem of the Windows operating
system that is capable of running 32-bit applications and is included on all
64-bit versions of Windows — including Windows 2000 Limited Edition, Windows XP
Professional x64 Edition, IA-64 and x64 versions of Windows Server 2003, 64-bit
versions of Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008, as well as the 64 bit
edition of Windows 7. In Windows Server 2008 R2 Server Core, it's an optional
component. WoW64 is designed to take care of many of the differences between
32-bit Windows and 64-bit Windows, particularly involving structural changes to
Windows itself.

[H] APC Question?

2009-12-14 Thread DSinc

I use APC ups's. Always have. Always will.
Just bought 2 RS-series 1500VA BackUps (LCD). They were built in the
Philipines.
Seems to me that APS is still confused about their XS series and their
RS series. At least from all the past and present research I have done.

One of my new RS series BackUps's (Philipines) PHONE filter interfaces
is broken. Odd because the RS series premium over the XS series is the
PHONE/DATA/? filter.
The phone jacks of the PHONE/DATA/? interface both appear to be
RJ31/RJ45 size. I suppose this is for commercial/business class
PHONE/DATA/? wiring. OK. SUX that I do NOT have same!! LOL!

If I try to plug in my normal RJ11 home-type PHONE plugs, I start
loosing my phone line/xdsl/internet connections. Hmmm.
This is proved because my phone line/xdxl/internet connection is now
running thru an RJ11 cable connector (small white plastic block with an
RJ11 female connector in each end; wired 11).

Not likely I will attempt an RMA with newegg. Shipping costs
Other than this small ???, this new ups is full active and works
well. really like the LCD display!
Besides, I can still swap it with an older RS-1500 (India) whose
PHONE/DATA/? interface connectors (logic) DO WORK! Even though my
research says this interface is NOT operable!

Confused I remain. But, I remain a loyal APC customer.
Just sharing recent observations. :)

Might there be some RJ11--RJ31/45 converters?
No. I have not looked yet. Never supposed I'd ever have to! LOL!
Best,
Duncan

Thanks Mark,
Don't understand the question.
If you mean the DSL Filter in the phone plug; NO.
That filter works fine anywhere in the house.
Even so, in/out, this UPS blocks PHONE/DATA/?.
Thanks. Good thought. Not yet.
