Re: [H] MS and WinXP?

My understanding from a Microsoft website is that support ends on Apr 8,
2014http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/endofsupport.aspx

If you do not want to run an unsupported OS, and do not want to upgrade to
something newer...what is there left for you to do ? Just curious.

RegardsGary

Subject: [H] MS and WinXP?

Has MS pushed up their schedule about WinXP?
I am working to an 02-2014 'plug-pull' datethat I believe I got from the
wise MS mavens here on our List.
No. I do not wish to upgrade to W8.1 right now. I do not own it yet.
No. I do not wish to upgrade to W8 right now. I do not own it yet.
No. I do not wish to upgrade to W7 right now, even though I own it.

I am still working a HALissue of a C2D cpu that may have a dead core.
This is an old issue and I truly appreciate all the help I have received.
Sorry, nothing worked. So,.
I bought a supposedly old, clean, copy of WinXP. After 3wks of dicking with
it, I finally got it to erase the root partition and install itself. Funny,
the install never asked for the 'product key. Odd? I just trucked on. It
lives today. But, I am now stuck with no answer from MS Windows Update. Most
depressing.
Opinions, suggestions welcome.

A fresh install of Windows XP actually has problems with Windows update at
this point, especially if you're starting pre-SP2. If you have Windows XP
with no service packs, you need to get a copy of SP1 or SP2 to install to
get Windows ready for SP3. This may not be required, but I have had issues
in the past going from non-SP XP to SP3. I'm not sure if this was due to a
requirement or just that I had issues once and now that's how I do it. If
you have SP1 or SP2 included or installed you should download SP3
installing. Once SP3 is installed you should use internet explorer 6 to
download firefox. Once you download firefox you should use firefox to
download internet explorer 8 from microsoft. Install IE8, then using IE8
start your windows update process.

I've had to do this a couple of times in the last month as I recycle old
computers and donate to families around town who either have no computer,
or it's REALLY old (Where a 5 year old PC is an upgrade).

Good Luck,

Christopher,
Thanks for your share. Yes, I believe I did have this round-robin. But,
after leaving the PC on
all night, things have improved. MS shoved 6 updates at me-installed.
Yes, I installed IE8because

I knew that IE6 was dead to Win Updates..
The WinXP CD I purchased state it was SP3. The old PC is now up and
running well. And, I can
now get to Windows Update. I checked my 'Update History' and find that
MS may have shoved/installed
some 162 patches on me. Seems likely because when I ran Defraggler (from
the CCleaner folks) I noticed
that my tiny sliver of XP on the root partition is now up to ~30% of the
root partition-almost 12GB.
Some big magichas taken place perhaps. Anyway, the old 'tst' PC is up
and running again!
