Bryan,
Thanks. OK, I'll ignore STP and leave it with you and the other IT Pros!
Still reading about SNMP and how it relates to my NAS. Have not used
it (I believe) yet, and don't plan to loose sleep about it anyway. The
LAN runs just fine here.

Best,
Duncan

Yes, and unlike the 2700 series, the 2800 series supports STP/RSTP and

That was my biggest complaint for an otherwise solid inexpensive basic

something

stackable and PoE), so unfortunately I'll be stuck with over a dozen

Yes. I am a big fan, and own 2 Dell 2716 GBit switches.
Both are so much better that the Netgear 10/100 switches they replaced.
My Brother still only does 10/100, but even it seems spritlier on the
Dell switches.

I gladly give the 2716's 5 STARS.

You can even "manage" them if you choose to! I do not.

I second the HP Pro Curve recommendation.

The lifetime warranty is amazing.

Unmanaged:

Nicely managed (expensive):

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833316044&cm_re=procurve-_-33-316-044-_-Product

And web managed...:

I have used a combination of the managed and web managed switches.

If you only need basic vlan support, the web managed will work (I have
used the 1800-8g quite a bit), the fully managed is simpler to configure
in a full environment, and does virtual stacking, etc.
