[H] Win7 Install on Intel SSD

2009-12-30 Thread Anthony Q. Martin
I can't seem to get Win7 Pro to install on the Intel SSD. After Setup
loads, it pretends it can't see the SSD.

I know the SSD is working because when I boot off the HD (which is
currently unplugged) and can use the SSD as drive E:. I have copied
files to it and whatnot.

The computer BIOS sees the drive as well as the DVD I'm using to install
Win7.

Any ideas?

I'm mainly just testing a fresh install onto the SSD before I move it to
my main system (home).

Just finished a Win7 Pro install on an Intel 160 gig SSD, created a
boot cd to update the firmware before doing anything and all worked
smooth. The only bad part is now I know how slow the DVD drive is for
installs since once it got to the part limited by the drive speed it
was only a few secs if that.

I have 7 installed on a OCZ Core with no problems and nothing done out of
the ordinary :/ Maybe try a Linux install, see if that installs ok and then
trouble shoot from there.

Wow, new one on me..

Intel does say in the firmware upgrade program that some SATA port
configurations don't let the SW see the drive...

This tool will only function correctly with the BIOS SATA ports
configured to Legacy / Compatibility mode, or AHCI mode.
Some BIOS configurations support SATA port modes such as IRRT,
RAID, and Native + IDE mode, which are not supported by this
utility.

I hadn't install the firmware update as the date on the SSD is October.
However, I see they do have an update since then which I have just
installed. Now to remove the HD and reboot from CD to see if Setup will
see the SSD now.

Well, the fireware upgrade worked fine. And I can see the SSD in the
bios, and in Windows 7 when booted from the HD.

Well, the firmware update didn't help matters. Setup refuses the see the

No, don't think so. Vidcard is a ATI Radeon and the no/so bridges are
AMD. I guess I should flash the mobo bios, though. Doing that now.

Re: [H] Win7 Install on Intel SSD

2009-12-30 Thread JRS
Found this in another forum..

I had an identical problem where the BIOS could see my SSD (Kingston
v-series 128GB), and when I booted into windows I could see it and
format it and assign a drive letter. But Windows 7 install COULD NOT
see the SSD, and Acronis True Image could not see the SSD to clone my
old system disk to it.

Very frustrating and it took me 2 days to work it out. I tried
EVERYTHING and didn't really find an answer on ANY forum. But the
solution was simple...

Physically remove connections to ALL disks on your computer EXCEPT
your SSD so it's the only disk connected. Then Windows install WILL see
the SSD and you can install Windows 7 to it (and I assume Vista).

Thanks for looking.

What is being suggested is exactly what I was doing. I had only the SSD
and the CD rom drive in the system. The HDD was completely unplugged.

By the way, I used the easeus program that was pointed out here. It
created a boot CD and it was able to see both the SSD and the HDD in the
system.

This is strange. Win7 must be at fault.

I'm doing all of this as a test runthe SSD will not live in the
system I'm doing this on right ...but this doesn't bode well...

Win7 is now installing on the SSD. Somehow, I must have done something
weird with the partition I had established on this disk.

YAY.

Thanks, JRS and everyone.

Thanks!

I booted to a WinPE CD and deleted the partition on the misbehaving
drive and then Win7 RC could see it... I don't remember If I
re-formatted it as well, or just deleted the partition
