I do not see this as a good thing, they would get less support from Nvidia and they are the ones that have helped them come out from under lintels' rein.

PHILADELPHIA (Reuters) - Advanced Micro Devices Inc. (AMD.N: Quote), the No. 2 supplier of computer processors, is close to a deal to buy graphics chip maker ATI Technologies Inc. (ATYT.O: Quote) (ATY.TO: Quote) for $5.5 billion, a source familiar with the situation said on Friday.
Such a deal would shake up the processor industry, which is witnessing a tooth-and-nail fight for market share between AMD and larger rival Intel Corp. (INTC.O: Quote). AMD would gain one of two major graphics chips makers, the other being Nvidia Corp.
(NVDA.O: Quote).
Markham, Ontario-based ATI is also a big supplier of chipsets -- the cluster of secondary chips and interfaces that surround a computer's processor -- for AMD and Intel products.
Unless talks break down, a deal could be announced as early as Monday, the source said.
ATI and AMD both declined to comment.

I think this is a big mistake. Now they are competing with two
companies that have traditionally been winning. Plus they lose
NVidia's chipset support. I can see NVidia dropping AMD (which sucks
for those of use with their crappy NForce chipset drivers) and
focussing completely on Intel. Imagine what NVidia could do if they
turned their full attention to Intel's chipset. That plus the Core 2
is going to put AMD in a bind, I think.

I think this is an overly worried look at this.

Nvidia will not drop AMD chipset support. It just doesn't work out for them
to do so, as it is very profitable for them, plus provides a solid base for
them to sell their cards.

In the end, Nvidia may actually like this combination because it pulls more
of ATI's resources away from developing high-end cards which lower Nvidia's
profit margins and pull them instead toward 4x4 physics processors, etc.

I'm not sure what sucks for those of use with crappy Nforce drivers the
Nforce chipset drivers have always been a snap for me, and very rarely cause
any hiccups anywhere.

I think Core2 puts AMD in a bind, because it is such a great performer,
though board level support for it right now still sucks - which is a very
short term problem.

Try setting up RAID. It's a POS, as has been discussed on the list before.

Well, since NVidia makes only the chipsets I am not sure why it matters
how much either of them make. If NVidia's chipset is profitable they
will continue to make them. I don't know of many businesses that
dispense with their bottom line only to prevent someone else from making
a buck.

Perhaps. But who makes more money from an AMD motherboard, the
chipset maker or the CPU manufacturer?
