From your description it is difficult to tell. If they have
commentary, that may add to their value. If they are in frail
condition, no one may want them. It is unlikely they have any
unusual monetary or scholarly value. To appeal to a collection they
would need to be in good or better condition and have some special
interest such as a place, editor, or supplemental material.

For scholarly value they would need to have some distinctive feature
such as the first edition from a famous rabbi, first from a
particular place or publisher, or have commentaries.

Someone at my shul once said it would be interesting to have a large
collection of siddurim, but he has never followed through on his
idea. I offered to give him 10 siddurim, but he never came to get them.

In my personal collection I have only a handful of 19th century
siddurim. They are examples of early American editions. I have no
interest in obtaining more.

Hi,
Tree of Life Judaica and Books, where I work in Seattle, is also
selling the DVD. I first saw it at the Jewish Film Festival in March
in Seattle and it is excellent. It highlights the history ofJews in
the past 2 centuries mainly in Egypt, Libya, and north Africa. I had
not known, for example, that about 100 years ago, 40% of Bagdad was
Jewish, or that a Jewish lawyer helped write the consitution of Egypt.

The DVD is $24.95 less 10% to Jewish librarians...plus shipping.

The DVD is on our website

get the 10% discount and to confirm shipping methods, it is best to

an almost identical format.
I did see it at CJH recently , W. 16 Street, N.Y.C.

But I lost his contact information.

I build on it with clippings and dates that I add as I read.
It is likely iimpossible to include everything in the world

I'm still trying to determine whether it was from

[ha-Safran]: Boston AJL attendees interested in Sephardic music

2006-06-11 Thread Joel Bresler
Dear friends:

I have been researching a comprehensive discography of Sephardic
music and collecting recordings for some time now. I have 8,000 song
performances digitized to date and the covers for 1,000+ recordings.
You may read a bit about the project here:
http://www.klezmershack.com/articles/madsen/bresler/ I am working
together with the Jewish Music Research Centre at Hebrew U to take
the discography, digitized cover art and possibly sound samples and
mount a website encompassing the first 100 years of recorded Sephardic music.

I will attend the Tuesday II-4 session, Preserving Jewish Recordings
(10:30 to 12 noon.) If there's interest. I would be happy to arrive
early or stay late and show attendees a work in progress on my
laptop somewhere at the hotel. I would also benefit greatly from
hearing from attendees (or others on this email list) about how such
a Sephardic music site could be of use to the wider library and
patron community.

Many thanks, shabbat shalom, and enjoy your Boston stay!!

[ha-Safran]: Graetz: History of the Jews

2006-06-11 Thread Barbara Rosett
Greetings:

As the chair of the Collection Development Committee of a small
Judaica Library (about 3,000 volumes) I would appreciate comments
regarding the 6 vol. set of books called THE HISTORY OF THE JEWS by
Heinrich Graetz.

The library has been given three sets of this work (over the years)
and there is a need to decide whether to keep one set or not keep any.

It would be extremely helpful to me and my committee if we could
hear from those of you involved with small Judaica libraries - or
large ones - as to your thinking regarding this work. Also, would
anyone be interested in receiving a set.

With many thanks,

Barbara Rosett
