RE: [ha-Safran]: Two Brothers
Daniel Stuhlman researched the answer to this question in the February 1997 issue of his Librarian's Lobby http://home.earthlink.net/~ddstuhlman/crc2.htm. Apparently, the story is of unknown origin. There is a similar story about two brothers who lived on opposite sides of a hill. One was childless and the other was blessed with many children. Both brothers were extremely jealous of each other. The childless brother was jealous of his sibling because for him, the harvest was extremely easy with such a big family to help. The brother who was blessed with many children was jealous of his sibling because he had only one mouth to feed and certainly had plenty of harvest left over. Each night, the two brothers would sneak over the hill to each other's barns and steal some of their brothers' barley. This continued on for many many months. One night, the two brothers met on top of the hill. When they realized what was going on, they began fighting and eventually beat the living you-know-what out of each other. This, according to legend, is the place where God chose to build the Keneset. Re: [ha-Safran]: Two Brothers
I think there was discussion of this on Hasafran a number of years ago, but I don't remember all the specifics. I think it was found in a late source, and possibly is of non-Jewish origin, especially since many elements of the story contradict the Tanakh and the Talmud. -Stanley Nachamie [EMAIL PROTECTED] Messages and opinions expressed on Hasafran are those of the individual author and are not necessarily endorsed by the Association of Jewish Libraries (AJL) === Submissions for Ha-Safran, send to: Hasafran @ lists.acs.ohio-state.edu SUBscribing, SIGNOFF commands send to: Listproc @ lists.acs.ohio-state.edu Questions, problems, complaints, compliments;-) send to: galron.1 @ osu.edu Ha-Safran Archives: Current: http://www.mail-archive.com/hasafran%40lists.acs.ohio-state.edu/maillist.html History: http://www.mail-archive.com/hasafran%40lists.acs.ohio-state.edu/history.html AJL HomePage http://www.JewishLibraries.org

[ha-Safran]: Ancient Jewish History/Non-Fiction Books
Hello, all: Does anyone have any helpful non-fiction sources for the topic of ancient Jewish history. I have a together who would like to pull together a research project in the library for her 6th and 7th grade class and would like to focus on using books. [ha-Safran]: Two brothers
The earliest appearance of this story seems to be in the book of Alph. De Lamartine, Voyage en Orient, 1, 1875, p. 329. the author states that he heard it from Arabs when he visited Palestine. These facts, and the further history of the story, appear in Z. Vilnay, Legends of the Sacred Land (Hebrew) p. 365 (no. 81). The book waa apparently published in English under this title by JPS in 1973-1978 but I don't have a page reference. . Re: [ha-Safran]: Two Brothers
The source is most likely an Arab folk tale. [ha-Safran]: Speakers for ALA Grant
A New Jersey colleague is applying for the Let's Talk About It Grant from the American Library Association, but she would like to ascertain that she can get an appropriate speaker for her programming: Fanwood Memorial Library is located in central New Jersey. What I need for a facilitator for the Jewish Literature series is, as is stated in the guidelines of the grant: The qualified scholar should have a Ph.D. in English Literature, Jewish Studies, or other related humanities subject; a strong knowledge of Jewish literature and culture; experience teaching literature at a university or college; and experience speaking before and facilitating discussion with adult audiences. Below are details of the grant (if anyone is interested in applying).
