RE: [ha-Safran]: Two Brothers

2007-10-18 Thread Bernstein, Steven (Library)
Daniel Stuhlman researched the answer to this question in the February
1997 issue of his Librarian's Lobby
http://home.earthlink.net/~ddstuhlman/crc2.htm. Apparently, the story
is of unknown origin.

There is a similar story about two brothers who lived on opposite sides
of a hill. One was childless and the other was blessed with many
children. Both brothers were extremely jealous of each other. The
childless brother was jealous of his sibling because for him, the
harvest was extremely easy with such a big family to help. The brother
who was blessed with many children was jealous of his sibling because he
had only one mouth to feed and certainly had plenty of harvest left
over. Each night, the two brothers would sneak over the hill to each
other's barns and steal some of their brothers' barley. This continued
on for many many months. One night, the two brothers met on top of the
hill. When they realized what was going on, they began fighting and
eventually beat the living you-know-what out of each other. This,
according to legend, is the place where God chose to build the Keneset.

2007-10-18 Thread Stanley Nachamie
I think there was discussion of this on Hasafran a
number of years ago, but I don't remember all the
specifics. I think it was found in a late source, and
possibly is of non-Jewish origin, especially since
many elements of the story contradict the Tanakh and
the Talmud.

[ha-Safran]: Ancient Jewish History/Non-Fiction Books

2007-10-18 Thread Dora Salm
Hello, all:
Does anyone have any helpful non-fiction sources for the topic of
ancient Jewish history. I have a together who would like to pull
together a research project in the library for her 6th and 7th grade
class and would like to focus on using books.
Any titles that you have used would be helpful!
Many thanks in advance,
Dora Salm

[ha-Safran]: Two brothers

2007-10-18 Thread Joseph Tabory
The earliest appearance of this story seems to be in the book of
Alph. De Lamartine, Voyage en Orient, 1, 1875, p. 329. the author
states that he heard it from Arabs when he visited Palestine. These
facts, and the further history of the story, appear in Z. Vilnay,
Legends of the Sacred Land (Hebrew) p. 365 (no. 81). The book waa
apparently published in English under this title by JPS in 1973-1978
but I don't have a page reference.

The source is most likely an Arab folk tale. I wrote about it on my
blog last year.

[ha-Safran]: Speakers for ALA Grant

2007-10-18 Thread Kathe Pinchuck
A New Jersey colleague is applying for the Let's Talk About It
Grant from the American Library Association, but she would like to
ascertain that she can get an appropriate speaker for her programming:

Fanwood Memorial Library is located in central New Jersey. What I
need for a facilitator for the Jewish Literature series is, as is
stated in the guidelines of the grant: The qualified scholar should
have a Ph.D. in English Literature, Jewish Studies, or other related
humanities subject; a strong knowledge of Jewish literature and
culture; experience  teaching literature at a university or college;
and experience speaking before and facilitating discussion with
adult audiences.

Below are details of the grant (if anyone is interested in applying).

Thank you for your help,
Kathe

The American Library Association (ALA) Public Programs Office (PPO)
and Nextbook, a gateway to Jewish literature, culture and ideas, are
pleased to announce another round of grants for Let’s Talk About It:
Jewish Literature – Identity and Imagination, a theme-based reading
and discussion series. Under the new deadlines, two new themes and
increased

Based on the “Let’s Talk About It” reading and discussion model
pioneered nationally by ALA in 1982, Let’s Talk About It: Jewish
Literature features scholar-led, theme-based discussions that explore
the best in contemporary and classic Jewish literature. Over the
past three years, Let’s Talk About It: Jewish Literature grants have
been awarded to 159 libraries nationwide. Participating libraries
will each host a five-part discussion series featuring one of six themes.

The two new themes and book selections are:

Neighbors: The World Next Door

A Journey to the End of the Millennium, A.B. Yehoshua

Red Cavalry, Isaac Babel

Neighbors, Jan T. Gross

The Assistant, Bernard Malamud

Mona in the Promised Land, Gish Jen

A Contract with God, Will Eisner

Julius Knipl, Real Estate Photographer: Stories, Ben Katchor

The Quitter, Harvey Pekar

The Rabbi’s Cat, Joann Sfar

Previous themes, which also are included, are
Your Heart’s Desire: Sex and Love in Jewish Literature
Demons, Golems, and Dybbuks: Monsters of the Jewish Imagination
Between Two Worlds: Stories of Estrangement and Homecoming and
A Mind of Her Own: Fathers and Daughters in a Changing World.
