Re: [ha-Safran]: Damaged books

2009-05-03 Thread Bernard Katz
Susan Ellman asked about restoring books that had been showered a
while ago by a bowl of flying honey nut cheerios and milk and are
now not only ?? but stuck together'. In my experience, the cost
of doing something to correct the results of the shower will far
exceed the cost of straight replacement.
Good luck,
Bernard.

For those seeking an authoritative yet concise guide to the Bible, a
review by Barbara M. Bibel of the Oakland Public Library in Oakland,
CA recommends The Jewish Bible: A JPS Guide as a valuable resource
for anyone engaged in Bible study. The review, from the
February/March 2009 issue of the AJL Newsletter, states: … JPS…
assembled a group of eminent scholars… as well as educators and
librarians to create a guidebook that covers everything from the
origins of the Bible to methods of study and commentaries. The book
includes information about the history of the Bible, the Torah
scrolls, Bible translations, and the question of gender when
translating. It also discusses law, poetry, prophecy and
storytelling… Commentaries and famous commentators, midrash and
summaries of the books of the Bible appear, often beautifully
illustrated with photographs from rare books. She also mentions the
charts, glossaries, maps, bibliography, list of recommended books and
Web sites provided to further aid students.

She adds: This is an excellent book for school, synagogue, and
public libraries. Both students and teachers will want personal
copies as well.

2009-05-03 Thread library
Barbara,
These two recently published books come to mind as Jewish-related mysteries:

Yellin, Tamar, The Genizah at the House of Shepher
Rozan's Shanghai Moon

The first would interest those with patience for a literary
novel. The latter is more main-stream mystery, set partly in
Shanghai when some Jews fled there to escape Hitler's advance.

Our synagogue library tries to appea to readers with a range of interests.

RE: [ha-Safran]: Seeing a list of past book reviews

2009-05-03 Thread Linda Silver
My computer died and this is the first time I've been reading or
writing email messages in quite a while. I'm not sure of the origins of the
discussion about access to AJL Newsletter book reviews that was summarized
by Suzi Dublin in her HaSafran message of April 21, but I want to chime in
and say how important I think it is for there to be online access to AJL
Newsletter reviews. My concern for years has been that our reviews reach a
very limited audience and not the wider world of book selectors who could
certainly use a Jewish perspective on Jewish books. For example, the large
public library database that I use most frequently (Clevnet) has a feature
in its catalog called Online Extras. It consists of published reviews from
SLJ, Booklist, etc. As we know, those are not always the best sources of
reviews of Jewish children's books and they are sometimes misleading. Each
time I read one, I wish that the AJL Newsletter review was also available.
In researching books of Jewish content, I often use Novelist, one of
hundreds of databases available through Clevnet. Again, reviews from
secular media are in it but never reviews from the Jewish media. Moreover,
some important Jewish books are not included and other rather poor ones are.
This, I'm pretty sure, is a result of the available reviews. If AJL
Newsletter reviews were available online, they would be accessible to
database searchers and could be more easily included in some of the big,
popular databases like Novelist. It is worth noting that AJL Newsletter
reviews of books for children and teens are included in the Children's
Literature Comprehensive Database (CLCD) and have been for about five years.
CLCD is a subscription service so its contents are limited to those who pay
the yearly fee or, like some AJL members, have it waived.
Recently, I suggested to the Newsletter editors that they look into
posting Newsletter reviews on Amazon. This seems like a good way to make
them available to the wider public but someone in AJL would have to be
responsible for finding out if and how it could be accomplished.
Regarding the questions in Suzi's messages from AJL Council:
1) Which reviews do we make public? Why not all of them? How else would
one choose? Certainly not just the reviews that are positive. Negative
reviews are very important as well.
2) How far back do we go? Start with the current and work backwards as
time allows.
3) Password protection for current reviews: Not necessary IMHO. How many
people join AJL just for access to Newsletter reviews?
To add one more thought to the mix, why not consider publishing the
entire Newsletter online? Do we really need to have it in print anymore?
This seems like something that the Newsletter editors and AJL's Publications
VP among others should be involved in researching and presenting as a
recommendation to Council.

[ha-Safran]: Encyclopedia of Jewish-American Literature

2009-05-03 Thread Lisa Silverman
I was just sent this reference book for review: Encyclopedia of
Jewish American Literature by Gloria L. Cronin and Alan L. Berger,
which is part of the Encyclopedia of American Ethnic Literature,
published by Facts on File. It is a rather curious collection of
short articles in alphabetical order by both writer's name and title
of work, such as; The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay comes
after the entry for Woody Allen.

But they have included a number of authors who may have been
Jewish, but have not made the Jewish experience a basis for their
work. At least I would imagine that to be the case for Isaac Asimov
or Erica Jong. And, I would never consider putting Dorothy Parker or
J.D. Salinger as typical inclusions in this type of anthology. And,
is John Irving even Jewish? Or should Sholem Aleichem even be
considered American?

So, this is just a heads-up for those thinking they may purchase
this book. I also don't feel the articles are necessarily written by
scholars who are experts in the field, to say the least.

MORE INFO Michael Nash michael.n...@nyu.edu

It has become an accepted truth: after World War II, American
Jews chose to be silent about the mass murder of millions of their
European brothers and sisters at the hands of the Nazis. Whether
motivated by fear, shame, or the desire to assimilate, the Jewish
community in the United States simply did not memorialize the
Holocaust until the Eichmann trial and the 1967 Arab-Israeli War made
it socially acceptable for them to do so.
Hasia R. Diner's new book shows this assumption of silence to
be categorically false.
Uncovering a rich and incredibly varied trove of
remembrances—in song, literature, liturgy, public display, political
activism, and hundreds of other forms—We Remember with Reverence and
Love shows that publicly memorializing those who died in the
Holocaust arose from a deep and powerful element of Jewish life in
postwar America. Not only does she marshal enough evidence to
dismantle the idea of American Jewish forgetfulness, she brings to
life the moving and manifold ways that this widely diverse group paid
tribute to the tragedy.
Note: Prof. Diner made use of diverse resources at
Tamimenet/Wagner, including the archival collections of the Jewish
Labor Committee, and related collections of Julius Bernstein, Edward
Goldstein, Isaiah Minkoff and Jacob Pat.*
Her work revealed a wonderfully rich and incredibly varied
trove of remembrances — in song, literature, liturgy, public display,
and hundreds of other forms — that show that publicly memorializing
those who died in the Holocaust was a deep and powerful element of
Jewish life in postwar America. Not only does she marshal enough
evidence to utterly destroy the idea of American Jewish
forgetfulness, she brings to life the moving and manifold ways that
this widely diverse group paid tribute to the tragedy.
Diner also offers a compelling new perspective on the 1960s and
its potent legacy, by revealing how our typical understanding of the
postwar years emerged from the cauldron of cultural divisions and
campus battles a generation later. The student activists and new
Jews of the 1960s who, in rebelling against the American Jewish
world they had grown up ina world of remarkable affluence and
broadening cultural possibilitiescreated a flawed portrait of what
their parents had, or rather, had not, done in the postwar years.
This distorted legacy has been transformed by two generations of
scholars, writers, rabbis, and Jewish community leaders into a
taken-for-granted truth.
