[ha-Safran]: Sydney Taylor Book Award Author Blog Tour
Yasher Koach to Barbara Bietz and Heidi Estrin for organizing this wonderful event. Thank you to the bloggers for interesting and incisive questions. I have an even greater appreciation of the books and the authors and illustrators. I learned about the authors' and illustrators' inspirations, research processes, Jewish influences, and some of their favorite books. You can link to any of the stops on the tour from http://jewishlibraries.org/blog/?p=63. Re: [ha-Safran]: Value of Encyclopedia Britannica
Nechama, the donor should have a book appraiser or an accountant determine the value of the books. IRS Publication 561 explains the procedure that donors should follow. All that you, the librarian, need to do is provide the donor with a letter stating that such-and-such items have been donated. [ha-Safran]: Responses to 5 Books
The titles which received multiple votes were As a Driven Leaf, Night, Diary of Anne Frank, and Sarna's American Judaism. Some 1-voters were: Eban's My Country, Dershowitz' Case for Israel, Dimont's Jews, God, and History, Sandmel's The Hebrew Scriptures, Telushkin's book of Ethics (actually, there are 2 of them now), Rise of David Levinsky, Victor Frankls' Man's Search for Meaning, Outwitting History, and Songs for the Butcher's Daughter. Oh yes, All-of-a-Kind Family got a vote, and 2 authors were mentioned simply as authors: Heschel and Ozick. As a Driven Leaf is my favorite novel of ideas, but I've found that when I've recommended it to patrons, it seems to fall flat. If anyone is interested to reply, I'd love to hear responses from those who share my love of the book as to the factors that endear it to you Andrea --- Messages and opinions expressed on Hasafran are those of the individual author and are not necessarily endorsed by the Association of Jewish Libraries (AJL) === Submissions for Ha-Safran, send to: hasaf...@osu.edu SUBscribing, SIGNOFF commands send to: Listproc @ lists.acs.ohio-state.edu Questions, problems, complaints, compliments;-) send to: galron.1 @ osu.edu Ha-Safran Archives: Current: http://www.mail-archive.com/hasafran%40lists.acs.ohio-state.edu/maillist.htmlhttp://www.mail-archive.com/hasafran%40lists.acs.ohio-state.edu/maillist.html History: http://www.mail-archive.com/hasafran%40lists.acs.ohio-state.edu/history.htmlhttp://www.mail-archive.com/hasafran%40lists.acs.ohio-state.edu/history.html AJL HomePage http://www.JewishLibraries.orghttp://www.JewishLibraries.org
[ha-Safran]: Reading level of the Encyclopaedia Judaica 2nd Edition
BSD It might just be me, but it seems that the Encyclopaedia Judaica Second Edition is written at a very scholarly level? I am currently working through the article on Sociology (Volume 18 Page 728-737 and I noticed right away that it is a challenge to get through. Does anyone know what grade or education level the articles are written for? [ha-Safran]: Hebrew language comics for MO MS/HS?
Hi all, I had a request from an Ivrit teacher for comics/graphic novels in Hebrew that are authentic literature (ie., not translations) and appropriate in both language complexity and content for Modern Orthodox students learning Hebrew in middle and high schools. Comic books, graphic novels, anthologies, magazines and/or websites would all be welcome. Sources that I have used in the past are generally not in Hebrew, or if so, for a mature audience. They include: http://jewishcomics.blogspot.com/ http://www.ou.org/index.php/jewish_action/article/8845/ http://www.seraphicpress.com/archives/2005/09/migdal_david_1.php http://live-from-israel.blogspot.com/2007/09/gadi-pollack.html Thanks for any recommendations! Re: [ha-Safran]: Value of Encyclopedia Britannica
Some libraries have their policies posted online, such as http://libweb.uoregon.edu/colldev/cdpolicies/gift.html , http://www.hsl.unc.edu/AboutLib/collections/donating.cfm#value , and http://library.udayton.edu/basics/policies/giftbooks.php . I've seen websites that advise the donor to consult with an accountant, a tax expert, or a lawyer. None say that the librarian should make the appraisal. [ha-Safran]: Maggie Anton (Rashi's Daughters)
She spoke here in Cincinnati Thursday evening, and I found her presentation enchanting. Lots of humor and I learned a lot--about Talmud and about Jewish life in Europe before the Crusades, especially the surprising status of Jewish women. She went a bit longer than other speakers, but the audience really enjoyed her. Re: [ha-Safran]: Responses to 5 Books
Growing up in the 60s my Jewish identity was bracketed by The Source Exodus Portnoy's Complaint The Chosen I've filled that narrative out a bit since but those were my foundation stones. So here is my more rounded out list. I'll add another vote for As A Driven Leaf ... also Tanakh, preferably the Artscroll for its index and appendices .. I notice that only one other person mentioned the Bible, but only the five books of Torah ... but I'd want it all Portnoy's Complaint, because it covers all the bases of the seamy underbelly of the Jewish-American experience The Chosen, Potok, because after Portnoy you will want to believe in something good about being a Jew... Exodus, Uris, the founding narrative of the State of Israel, pretty much everything I know about those times If you gave me a little more room on the bookshelf, I'd want to add, in no particular order: A Tale of Love and Darkness, Amos Oz To Pray As a Jew, Donin Home to Stay, Daniel Gordis Living a Jewish Life, Diamant/Cooper Jews Without Money, Gold A Bintel Brief, The Daily Forward The Source, Michener A Pigeon and A Boy, Shalev Past Continuous, Shabtai -- Lee Jaffe, UC Santa Cruz --- Messages and opinions expressed on Hasafran are those of the individual author and are not necessarily endorsed by the Association of Jewish Libraries (AJL) === Submissions for Ha-Safran, send to: hasaf...@osu.edu SUBscribing, SIGNOFF commands send to: Listproc @ lists.acs.ohio-state.edu Questions, problems, complaints, compliments;-) send to: galron.1 @ osu.edu Ha-Safran Archives: Current: http://www.mail-archive.com/hasafran%40lists.acs.ohio-state.edu/maillist.html History: http://www.mail-archive.com/hasafran%40lists.acs.ohio-state.edu/history.html AJL HomePage http://www.JewishLibraries.org
