Fwd: [ha-Safran]: Cataloguing Judaeo-German

2010-03-14 Thread Martin Kaminer
Fascinating. My colleague, recently returned from remote regions,
contributed this observation on the Yiddish-German relationship and
the question of self-hatred as expressed by choice of language:

The impetus behind Moses Mendelssohn's Biur, or translation of the

bible into proper German, though in Hebrew script, was an intense

and irrational hatred of Yiddish, his mother tongue. This jargon

contributed no little to the immorality of the common Jews,

Mendelssohn wrote. Having internalized the hatred Germans felt for

Yiddish, Mendelsohn thought Yiddish was a corrupting factor, even

going as far to say that rational thought was not possible in Yiddish.

As a result, Mendelssohn's attempts to promote German language among

Yiddish-speaking Jews were strongly based on hatred of their language,

the main vessel of their culture.

Re: [ha-Safran]: Cataloguing Judaeo-German

2010-03-14 Thread scorrsin
Sorry, I haven't been paying close attention, but did someone on this list
actually argue that Yiddish is merely a form of German? Hard to believe
that anyone here would say that.

German in Hebrew script is, however, well-attested, included in the first
Jewish-interest Warsaw periodicals in the early-mid 19th c. Forget the
titles right now.

Re: [ha-Safran]: Cataloguing Judaeo-German - 2

2010-03-14 Thread scorrsin
Once upon a time (in a galaxy far, far away) I tried to track down
the saying about a language is a dialect with an army and a navy
(or whatever, approx like that). I found Weinreich referring to a
night school class he taught in the Bronx, in Yivo Bleter, ca.1945.
That is, he said that it was one of his students who said that, or so he said.

Did someone on this list actually say that Yiddish was only a dialect
of German? Well heck.

[ha-Safran]: Shabbat Classes

2010-03-14 Thread Ellie Shore
Our Jewish Religious School has recently instituted classes on
Shabbat, as part of a monthly community-wide Shabbaton. The director
is seeking ways to provide educational experiences within the
requirements of Shabbat, and would like to talk with people who are
doing this. If you can suggest someone for her to contact, please
send the information off-line. Please send to
elsie.sh...@wichita.edu, as my home email has developed an
attitude. Thank you in advance for any assistance you can provide.

[ha-Safran]: Reopening of The Hurva Synagogue

2010-03-14 Thread Jacob Richman
Hi Everyone!

Jerusalem's historic Hurva Synagogue has been rebuilt after
nearly a decade of construction. On Sunday, Adar 28, 5770
(14th of March 2010) a sefer Torah was dedicated in the
synagogue. On Monday evening there will be an official
reopening ceremony.

I posted photos of the synagogue at:
http://www.jr.co.il/pictures/israel/things/hurva-synagogue.htm

Please share this historical event with your relatives and friends.
Thank you!

Have a good week and a good month,
Shavua Tov and Chodesh Tov,
Jacob
