[ha-Safran]: Do a Mitzvah - Make a Minyan!

2011-06-15 Thread Marga Hirsch
If you wonder what the appeal is of early morning davening, consider
coming to a minyan at convention! The egalitarian minyan especially
welcomes participants who are not regular daveners to come and maybe
even experiment. Want to wear a tallit? There will be extras
available. Curious about tefillin? You can try them on. If you've
never had an aliyah, convention is a safe place to do it for the first time.

Minyanim are at 6:45 am every day: orthodox in Huronie A, egalitarian
in Huronie B.

Feel free to let me know ahead of time if you'd like to try something
new at the egalitarian minyan, or simply come at 6:45 am on Monday,
Tuesday or Wednesday. See you there!

[ha-Safran]: Why 10 for a minyan?

2011-06-14 Thread Marga Hirsch
In this week's Torah portion, Sh'lach l'kha, Moses sends a team of 12
scouts – one representative from each of the tribes – to scope out
the land of Canaan. Only Joshua and Caleb return with a positive
report. God then asks (Numbers 14:27), How long will this evil
'assembly' provoke [the Jewish nation] to complain against Me? From
the use of the word eidah, assembly, to refer to that group of ten,
the rabbinic sages deduced that an eidah, a congregation, must
consist of at least ten people.

Next Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday at 6:45 am, we will have two
minyanim: orthodox in room Huronie A and egalitarian in room Huronie
B. The orthodox minyan needs 10 men, and the egal minyan needs 10 men
and women in order for people to say all the morning prayers and read
from the Torah, and in order for mouners to say Kaddish.

Please consider participating in a minyan one morning of convention.
If there are ten participants for each minyan at 6:45 am, both
services can begin promptly and end in time for a leisurely breakfast.

Thanks in advance,

Marga

[ha-Safran]: Anyone driving to convention from New York area?

2011-06-10 Thread Marga Hirsch
Shalom l'kulam,

I am organizing the egalitarian minyanim at Convention – you'll hear
more from me about that – and I'm eager to introduce a new siddur,
Siddur Eit Ratzon by Dr. Joseph Rosenstein. We only need about a
dozen of them, but the cost and hassle of shipping them to Montreal
is prohibitive. If someone is driving to convention who would be
willing to bring a small carton of books, I would be most grateful.
In all likelihood, you would not need to transport them back again. I
will be encouraging people to buy the siddur as a resource for their
libraries (and to recommend to their congregations, if appropriate).
I'll take orders any day, and anyone who buys one can pick it up
after our final minyan on Wednesday morning.

But first we have to get the books there! Can anyone help?

Thanks,

Marga

[ha-Safran]: Cover design of Alcalay dictionary

2010-08-18 Thread Marga Hirsch
The graphic designer here – who doesn't read Hebrew – loves the
design of the cover of the Alcalay Hebrew-English dictionary. We have
a 1981 printing, but I think the design stayed the same for many
editions. He's particularly interested in the typeface. Any ideas how
I might find out who designed the cover and what the typeface is called?

Thanks.

RE: [ha-Safran]: Hadassah article about new, crime story books

2010-07-27 Thread Marga Hirsch
I suspect Rachel Kamin did mean A Secret, the film version of
Memory by Philippe Grimbert. The book's title in the original French
was Un Secret. One of our synagogue book discussion groups read the
book, an autobiographical novel about a Parisian boy's discovery that
his parents have kept secret not only their experience during the
Occupation, but even the fact that they are Jewish. A few weeks after
the book discussion, we showed the film as part of a film series.

[ha-Safran]: Questions for Synagogue librarians - DVD collectioins

2010-06-07 Thread Marga Hirsch
Fellow synagogue librarians,

How do you manage your DVD collections? Do you leave DVD's in their
cases, or keep them behind the desk? Do you assign them call numbers
or categorize them another way? I'm thinking of changing the system I
inherited here and am interested in what others are doing.

A related question: do you still have videocassettes? I have a
shelf-ful; they are rarely checked out. I'm very short of space, so
I'm thinking of removing them all and replacing the titles that I
think people will borrow with DVD's. Does anyone have advice to offer
on the subject?

Reply off-list; I'll summarize the responses and post the summary for
each question.

Thanks!

[ha-Safran]: Summer opportunity for 20-30 year olds

Shalom safranim/ot,

Please share the announcement below – about the Everett Fellows
Program at the National Havurah Committee Summer Institute – with any
20- and 30- something young Jews you know. It's a fabulous
opportunity. Institute is an inspiring, soul-refreshing opportunity
for study, Tefillah, and community for people of all ages. If you are
outside the age range for the Everett Fellows Program, please
consider coming to Institute as a participant. All the information is
at www.havurah.org, or you can ask me about it.

The National Havurah Committee Summer Institute 2010 is now accepting
applications for the Everett Fellows Program. Fellows participate in
the full Summer Institute programming and in four workshops designed
specifically for them. Fellows receive a scholarship for tuition,
room, and board, and are expected to pay only for registration and
dues ($120) for the full week.

Summer Institute is a week of learning and teaching with 350+
learners from across North America (and a few other places too). To
quote a former Everett Fellow, if a multigenerational Jewish
community were inclusive of educated laypeople, respectful of
individuals with or without families, and open to experimentation,
would it be a place for 20-and-30-something Jews like [me/you/us]?
Yes. You can see other comments about the Summer Institute at
http://jewschool.com/category/events/nhc-summer-institute/

To apply for an Everett Fellowship, you must be 22 through 32 years
of age, interested in exploring havurah Judaism, and willing to
participate fully in the Summer Institute. Preference is given to
first time Institute attendees. For more information,
visitwww.havurah.org or call the NHC office at 215-248-1335. The
application deadline is May 1.

RE: [ha-Safran]: Aleph-bet book

2009-03-31 Thread Marga Hirsch
Talya,

Could you be thinking of the Aleph-Bet Story Book by Deborah Pessin,
published by JPS. The stories are not about how each letter got its
name, but there's a story for each letter that relates to its name.
The first one is about creation. As the book progresses through the
aleph-bet, the stories go through the Tanakh and later Midrash. Even
if it's not the book you're looking for, you'll like it.

We are looking for a book or a series which is age appropriate and

be able to read it with her each Shabbat and incorporate it into our

We've looked into this a bit and found a series called Tell Me the

[ha-Safran]: Can anyone loan Elazar classification system?

2008-11-21 Thread Marga Hirsch
Does anyone have a copy of A Classification System for Libraries of
Judaica you'd be willing to loan me for a short while? This library
uses an eclectic system that seems to be a blend of Dewey and Elazar;
I'm still working on figuring it out. I'd like to look at Elazar, but
I don't want to buy the book if I'm not going to be using it going forward.

If you're in the NYC area, and if you're coming to the conference on
Dec 2, I could get the book from you then.

Hoping to hear from someone! Thanks,

Marga

It sounds like you have prints of the illustrations for the JPS

You'll find a good deal about him.

[ha-Safran]: Preschool book on kindness to animals

A patron is looking for a book to teach a 4-year-old kindness to
animals. I’ve checked the Jewish Valuesfinder; most of the books
listed there are retellings of Noah’s ark. This grandmother is
looking for something more specific, because the child in question
has a tendency to be rough on the family dog. Any suggestions?

[ha-Safran]: Survey on Language and Identity

2008-07-13 Thread Marga Hirsch
Begin forwarded message:

You are invited to participate in an interesting and entertaining survey
about language. Essentially, we're asking about the spread of Yiddish
(and some Hebrew) among English speakers in North America. We're
turning to both Jews and non-Jews to answer questions like these: Who
uses Yiddish words like shmooze and daven and phrases like Money,
shmoney? Why do some people say temple while others say shul? Who
prefers biblical names for their babies? Your responses will help us
answer these and other questions, and you might learn something about
yourself in the process. Please set aside 15-20 minutes, and click on
this link to participate.

[ha-Safran]: Bindery commendation

2008-07-09 Thread Marga Hirsch
Friends,

I have just unpacked a shipment of books that I sent to be rebound
and/or repaired at the Bridgeport National Bindery. The quality of
the work exceeded my highest expectations. I had sent books with a
variety of problems, among them:

One book, with just one loose signature, was repaired without any
visible alteration.
An old monograph has a new fabric cover, with title and author
stamped in gold on spine and front cover.
Several hardcover books were given new, laminated covers with
digitized images of their original covers or dust jackets.
Best of all, battered paperback copies of Gerda Weissman Klein's
Promise of a New Spring, now out-of-print, were converted to
hardcover books with laminated covers, also with digitized i div

For the library, the cost of rebinding was approximately $11/volume.
Individuals may send books for rebinding for approx. $33/volume. For
valuable books, the bindery has a conservator available to work on them.

In addition to doing fine work, the bindery was attentive and
responsive to questions and communication, whether by email or by
phone. I recommend the Bridgeport National Bindery without
reservation. Contact info below.

If you find it, let us all know!

Another story children's librarians might want to know about is Sorry
by Jean Van Leeuwen. It is not a Jewish book, but the story is
perfect for the season. Unfortunately, it is out of print, but school
and synagogue librarians may be able to borrow a copy from the local

/MFA/Facts+About+Israel/Education/EDUCATION-+Higher+Education.htm

The URL for the image itself is

http://www.mfa.gov.il/NR/rdonlyres/832BE5F2-4AFE-43FB-ADA2-8090C9A61DBE/0/MFAJ0byl0.jpg

If for some reason the URL doesn't work, go to Google Images, type in
Pilichowski university, and then search. (Note that the name is
Pilichowski, w/ an i after the L.) The painting will be the first
item that comes up. Unfortunately, the quality of the online image is
not great. It's an enormous painting and a small image. The original
is phenomenal in its detail. You can recognize each of the
dignitaries present on the dais. In the audience are representatives
of every sort of person who lived in Palestine at the time, including
Bedouin in traditional headdress, Hadassah nurses in uniform, etc.

Hope this is helpful!

Have you heard about all the changes about to happen at Akiba? - new
name, new location, new head of school!

I have duplicate issues of Nashim - my own copies, not the library's.
I would be happy to send them to anyone who wants them, for either a

No. 2 (Spring 1999)
No. 4 (Fall 2001) - Feminist Interpretations of Rabbinic Literature
No. 5 (Fall 2002) - Gender, Food and Survival

[ha-Safran]: Easy mitzvah to promote literacy

2007-02-08 Thread Marga Hirsch
Shalom safranim/ot!

Did you know that this year is the 50th birthday of the Cat in the Hat?

Do a mitzvah – Send the Cat a birthday card!
Random House has pledged to donate one Random House children's book
to First Book for every purchase of a Dr. Seuss title made between
January 1 and May 1. In addition, the publisher has created both
mail-in and online birthday postcards, available online
at www.catinthehat.com. For every birthday card received, Random
House will also donate one book to First Book, a nonprofit
organization founded to give children from low-income families the
opportunity to read and own their first books.

Spread the word!

Bible atlas for 5th graders

2007-01-25 Thread Marga Hirsch
A 4th-5th grade Jewish studies teacher would like the library to
acquire a biblical atlas. Our usual book jobber (Follett) seems to
have 4 in stock, but Amazon offers many more. Does anyone have a
favorite to recommend?

Thanks!

[ha-Safran]: Kids' resources on Mishnaic sages

2006-10-25 Thread Marga Hirsch
A 5th grade Judaic studies teacher is going to have her students -
working in teams - study some of the major Tanna'im, most likely some
but not all of Hillel, Akiba, Yohanan ben Zakkai, Elazar ben Azariah,
Tarfon, Rabban Gamliel II, Yehudah ha-Nasi. They will be presenting
their work in a variety of formats, e.g., a report, a skit, a mock
newspaper article. I'm compiling resources for them, and most of what
I find is aimed at adults. Can anyone recommend sources - written,
recorded, online, etc. - at a 5th grade or even middle school level?

Of course the teacher told me about this today, and the kids are
starting the project tomorrow, so I'd love to hear from you sooner
rather than later. Thanks in advance!

[ha-Safran]: Shoot: 1973 World Book Encyclopedia

2006-08-31 Thread Marga Hirsch
Sh'eilah: What does one do w/ a 1973 edition of World Book?

Teshuvot:
Use volumes as doorstops?
Press leaves?
Use instead of bricks in a bricks boards bookshelf?
Use pages for collage or rolled paper beads?
Recycle?
Any other suggestions?

Selling on eBay does not appear to be a viable option. There's a 1971
edition for sale now w/ no bids, and shipping would be $40.

Thanks,

Hi,
As you may know, the Jewish Book Council runs many projects, in addition to
scheduling author events at Jewish book festival through the Jewish Book
NETWORK. This spring, we are launching a new project, unlike any of our
current ones, but also dedicated
to the promotion of Jewish literature and writing and its legacy.

In May, the Jewish Book Council will co-sponsor, with the Mayanot Institute,
the first Israel in Print birthright israel trip. The birthright israel
program offers Jewish 18-26 year olds--who have not previously been on an
organized, peer trip--a free
10-day trip to Israel to experience the country, learn about the history and
culture, and just generally have an amazing, fun, whirlwind tour of Israel
with their peers.

Recently, special interest birthright trips have been forming, trips that
tailor their itinieraries and gather a group of participants with a similar
focus. This new Israel in Print is a focused on literature, journalism,
and writing. It will include
all of the standard elements of a birthright israel trip--like swimming in
the Dead Sea, hiking Masada, taking jeep rides in the desert, visiting
Jerusalem, Tel Aviv, Tiberias, and Sfat--along with special activities. The
partnership between Mayanot and
Jewish Book Council will allow participants to see an Israel that most
visitors never do - by meeting with Israel's most famous authors and
journalists, respected, award-winning writers as well as the hottest
up-and-coming young talent.

We're very excited about this trip, but it's brand-new, and no one knows
about it. Please help us spread the word. If you know of any Jewish 18-26
year old--students, grad students, friends--who is eligible for this trip
and is interested in literature
and journalism, please ask them to contact our office or visit
www.mayanotisrael.com/jbc. The trip is tentatively scheduled for the end of
May, after most universities are done for the year.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me. We do have
informational postcards that we could send to you to distribute, if you are
interested.

Thanks so much,
Miri

[ha-Safran]: Christmas and start of Hanukkah

2005-12-24 Thread Marga Hirsch
I referred the question to a friend of mine who knows a great deal about
the Jewish calendar. His response is below.

I'm pretty sure that the only time this CAN happen is on the 1st or 9th
year
of the 19-year cycle of Jewish leap years, which are the two latest years
of
the cycle with respect to the civil calendar. (If you divide the Jewish
year by 19, the remainder has to be 1 or 9.) 5766 is the 9th year of
the
current cycle. But the Hanukkah/Christmas thing doesn't happen each
time
there's a year 1 or a year 9, due both to civil leap years and to the
occasional need to add or subtract one day from the Jewish year.

So what do you mean by falling on Christmas? If you mean that the
first
candle is on the 25th, then that will next happen in 5785 (2024, year
9)
and in 5796 (2035, year 1). But if you also count the first candle
being
lit on Christmas Eve, then that will next happen on the next year 1:
5777
(2016). Furthermore, in 5804 (2043, year 9), the first candle will be
on
December 26th! That might be the latest possible start date for
Hanukkah,
I'm not sure.

Of course, all of the above is invalid if either the mashiach comes
before
then, or if a gigantic meteor comes before then and disrupts all the
astronomical calculations that have been done for the future. Though in
either of these cases, whether Hanukkah and Christmas coincide or not
will
be the last thing on our minds.

RE: [ha-Safran]: Defining what is Jewish

2005-02-15 Thread Marga Hirsch
Hevre,
The title Kaddish for Grandpa in the Name of Jesus Amen is most
unfortunate - I can't understand how an editor allowed it - but the book
in no way encourages intermarriage. On the contrary, it supports
conversion. The father in the book converted to Judaism. He is Jewish.
He is a partner in a Jewish marriage, not an intermarriage. I assume
that if the author and editor had titled the book Two Services for
Grandpa, it would be easier to buy.

RE: [ha-Safran]: What is Happening to AJL?

2005-02-13 Thread Marga Hirsch
I have not seen the books mentioned in the original post, so I can't
comment on their eligibility for an award or their suitability for
inclusion in one collection or another on the basis of their particular
merits. However, I want to register my opinion that to provide Jewish
children with books that reflect their reality, we must be open to
stories of interfaith families.

For the last year and a half I have been the coordinator of The Rabbi
Morris Goodblatt Academy of the Philadelphia Region of the Rabbinical
Assembly. We offer 30 weeks of Hebrew and Judaica instruction to
individuals who are interested in conversion within the Conservative
movement. Many of our students are engaged. After conversion, they are
married with Huppah and Kiddushin. They will, God willing, be blessed
with children whom they will raise as Jews. Those children will have one
set of grandparents who celebrate Christmas. When one of those
grandparents passes away, the Jewish grandchildren will participate in
the funeral, burial, and mourning. Not every interfaith family includes
an interfaith marriage.

Full citation:

Polychrome Historical Haggadah for Passover, Haggadah Me-ir Ay-nai-yim
by Jacob Freedman. It was published by the Jacob Freedman Liturgy

A friend of mine bought a used copy a couple of years ago from one of
the online used booksellers, I think.

Good luck to whoever is looking for it.
