And this second book is my bible which in 1968 was the very first cookbook I ever bought. Unfortunately today you will most definitely have to go scrouging around mouldy old back-alley used book stores. It is so full of crumbs, oil splotches and what have you that if push came to shove and a member of the Donner Party, you could boil it up and have it for supper: (2) The Israeli Cookbook. Re: [ha-Safran]: Cookbooks
I highly recommend Joan Nathan's Jewish Holiday Kitchen! I was given *two* copies at my own adult bat mitzvah 21 years ago, and still enjoy it greatly, both for the recipes and also for the all the information about the holidays, the people who contributed the recipes, and the many places around the globe where the recipes came from. At seder time, everyone raves about the Yemenite charoset I make from this book. http://www.amazon.com/Joan-Nathans-Jewish-Holiday-Cookbook/dp/0805242171/ref=sr_1_3?s=booksie=UTF8qid=1286370813sr=1-3 Best, Kimberley Shaw Wellesley College Library --- Messages and opinions expressed on Hasafran are those of the individual author and are not necessarily endorsed by the Association of Jewish Libraries (AJL) === Submissions for Ha-Safran, send to: hasaf...@osu.edu SUBscribing, SIGNOFF commands send to: Listproc @ lists.acs.ohio-state.edu Questions, problems, complaints, compliments;-) send to: galron.1 @ osu.edu Ha-Safran Archives: Current: http://www.mail-archive.com/hasafran%40lists.acs.ohio-state.edu/maillist.html History: http://www.mail-archive.com/hasafran%40lists.acs.ohio-state.edu/history.html AJL HomePage http://www.JewishLibraries.org

[ha-Safran]: Cookbooks
A patron wants a recommendation for a Jewish cookbook for a young lady converting to Judaism. A cookbook of easy to make recipes and which also tells something of the history and/or cuisine as background to some of the dishes. Any suggestions? URJ has a new one called Entree to Judaism. I'd like to hear views of it and/or other favorite titles. [ha-Safran]: Cookbooks query
It looks like my time away from the reference desk has made my research skills a bit rusty. At least that's the excuse I'm using for forgetting to double-check with LCSH first for the proper subject heading, which is JEWISH COOKERY, not JEWISH COOKBOOKS. Therefore, the URL I should have used is : http://www.worldcat.org/search?q=su%3Acookery+su%3Ajewishfq=fc=yr:_50qt=show_more_yr%3A The chronological breakdown for that search (back to 1900) is : Year 2007 (44) 2006 (61) 2005 (69) 2004 (70) 2003 (77) 2002 (81) 2001 (74) 2000 (99) 1999 (79) 1998 (83) 1997 (66) 1996 (75) 1995 (73) 1994 (58) 1993 (67) 1992 (56) 1991 (66) 1990 (97) 1989 (45) 1988 (44) 1987 (70) 1986 (58) 1985 (42) 1984 (54) 1983 (41) 1982 (59) 1981 (37) 1980 (57) 1979 (42) 1978 (50) 1977 (45) 1976 (52) 1975 (43) 1974 (34) 1973 (34) 1972 (41) 1971 (43) 1970 (51) 1969 (28) 1968 (28) 1967 (23) 1966 (28) 1965 (22) 1964 (17) 1963 (17) 1960 (46) 1958 (18) 1955 (19) 1950 (33) 1900 (49) while the language breakdown is : Language English (1964) Hebrew (266) Spanish (66) French (61) German (51) Yiddish (49) Russian (48) Italian (20) Portuguese (11) Polish (10) Czech (9) Hungarian (9) Dutch (5) Danish (4) Ladino (3) Finnish (3) Turkish (3) Undetermined (2) Georgian (1) Croatian (1) Swedish (1) Norwegian (1) Lithuanian (1) I added SU:translations to the search but that got no results.
