Stacia Deutsch, Hot Pursuit: Murder in Mississippi -- It was the
Freedom Summer of 1964. Civil rights workers Mickey Schwerner, Andrew
Goodman, and James Cheney were driving through rural Mississippi. When
a police cruiser flashed its lights behind them, they hesitated. Were
these law-abiding officers or members of the Ku Klux Klan? Should they
pull over or try to outrun their pursuers? The last day in the lives of
these courageous young men is re-imagined in this gripping story. Stacia
Deutsch is a rabbi and has published more than 23 children's books,
including the NY Times best-selling novelization Cloudy with a Chance
of Meatballs.

Meg Wiviott, Benno and the Night of Broken Glass -- A neighborhood cat
observes the changes in German and Jewish families in Berlin during the
period leading up to Kristallnacht, the Night of Broken Glass. The cat's
eye view introduces the Holocaust to children in a gentle way that can
open discussion of this period. This book received a starred review in
Booklist.

Deborah Lakritz, Say Hello, Lily -- On Lily's first visit to Shalom
House, she clings closely to her mom, overwhelmed by all the new faces
of the seniors who live there. But slowly Lily joins the activities,
makes new friends, and celebrates a birthday to remember. Author
presentation is a wonderful program for children and grandparents.

Norman H. Finkelstein, Jewish Comedy Stars: Classic to Cutting Edge--
From vaudeville to viral comedy on the web, short biographies of Jewish
comedians who heavily influenced the entertainment industry in the 20th
and 21st centuries. Sorted chronologically, the book profiles Jewish
comedians from Georgie Jessel to Sarah Silverman.

Heidi Smith Hyde, Feivel's Flying Horses -- A loving father carves
carousel horses that resemble members of his family as he saves money to
bring them over from Europe. A work of historical fiction based on the
stories of Jewish woodcarvers who came from the Old Country and turned
their talents to carving carousel horses on Coney Island. Heidi's first
book, Mendel's Accordion, was a Sydney Taylor Notable Book and the
winner of the Sugarman Award for Best Children's Book.

Re: [ha-Safran] Jewish Book Month

2007-04-11 Thread yoel sheridan
Dear Heather

There are many books on Jewish themes that do not get the promotion
or distribution that they deserve because they are published on
limited budgets by small publishers or by self-publication. Jewish
Libraries should encourage such publishers and writers by drawing
attention to those books, many of which are worthy of a wider
audience. What better place to start than to allocate a section to
lesser known books and invite recommendations. A classic example of
one such neglected book was Henry Roth's Call it Sleep which has
since been regarded as one of the greatest American novels of the
twentieth century.

[ha-Safran]: Jewish Book Month

2006-09-20 Thread Linda Silver

Jewish Book Month is sponsored by the Jewish Book Council and it
occurs the month before Hanukkah. Since Hanukkah starts on Dec. 15
this year, Jewish Book Month probably starts on or around Nov.
15. The Jewish Book Council doesn't post information about it on
their website and usually advertises it in Jewish Book World too
late to be useful, so the best way to get information about the
kinds of materials available for sale (poster, etc.) is to call the
Jewish Book Council and speak with Carolyn Hessel, the director at

[ha-Safran]: Jewish Book Month 2006

2006-01-10 Thread Shelly Weiner
Dear all,
Our library district wants to do programming for Jewish Book Month
this year (FINALLY!). I have searched for the 2006 dates, but can
not locate it on Google et al. Does anyone have this information?

Thanks

[ha-Safran]: Jewish Book Month Lists

2005-11-20 Thread Linda Silver
FROM THE AJL
WEBSITE, http://www.jewishlibraries.orgwww.jewishlibraries.org:
Just in time for Jewish Book Month, the Greater Cleveland Chapter has once
again compiled lists of recommended titles for
http://www.jewishlibraries.org/ajlweb/resources/JBM_adult_2005.pdfadults
and
http://www.jewishlibraries.org/ajlweb/resources/JBM_children_2005.pdfchildren.

Both lists are in Adobe Acrobat form and are appropriate for printing,
folding, and distributing. Thanks again to webmaster, Nancy Sack, and to
Julie Moss of the AJL-GCC chapter. Enjoy!

Re: [ha-Safran]: Jewish Book Month Activities

2005-10-20 Thread Susan Dubin
Several programs that have worked well:
A Jewish Book Bingo: Make a bingo card with different types of Jewish
books on it (Holiday story, Israel, Prayer, Judaic fiction, Holocaust,
etc.). Participants win a prize for reading books in the categories to
make a Bingo

One Book/One People: Choose a good recent book and have everyone in the
congregation read it. Then have a program to discuss the book.

Special storytellers: Everyone Reads Jewish Books: Invite different
members of the synagogue with different professions to come in and read
a story to a class during Jewish Book Month. We have had rabbi, cantor,
principal, crossing guard, member of city council, firefighter, police
officer, custodian come and share a book.

Jewish Storytelling festival: Have children sign up to tell a Jewish
story. Model by sharing a story with them first. Then present several
different retellings of Jewish stories or legends for students to retell
in their own words.

Hope these give you a start...

[ha-Safran]: Jewish Book Month Activities

2005-10-14 Thread Paula Fine
My apologies if this is a duplicate, but I am writing to find some
ideas or resources for Jewish Book Month programming for the children
in the religious school as well as for the adults. Have you done any
projects or programs that have worked especially well, or are there
any Internet sites that you've found particularly helpful?

Thanks in advance and my wishes for a peaceful New Year.

Re: [ha-Safran]: Jewish Book Month

2003-07-16 Thread by way of Yossi Galron [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Some say November and some say the month before Chanukah.
Wish we had definitive answers but seems we are in a Hillel and Shamai moment.
