Edythe Geiger English Library, P.O.B. 54, Safed 13100, Israel www.geigerlibrary.org Email: ed...@kinneret.co.il It also hosts a stamp club for 50-200 kids every second Friday afternoon, many of them children from disadvantaged backgrounds, who are taught geography and history and biography by young adults while they collect and swap stamps. (It's really easy to save your foreign stamps and send them there in an envelope every couple of years.) The English Library in Safed is staffed by a dedicated team of around 36 volunteers under the watchful eye of the indomitable Edyth Geiger, now 91 years old, without whom there would be no library. Edyth ran the library for 20 years from her own living room until there were so many books it became impossible to move. Once the library was given funds to move to a dedicated space, it became even more successful and now operates as a meeting place and notice board for the English speaking community of Safed. As of a few years ago, it housed 15,000 books for all ages and tastes, fiction and nonfiction. [update in 2010: the group is in the process of raising funds to actually buy their space.] Linda Press Wulf --- Messages and opinions expressed on Hasafran are those of the individual author and are not necessarily endorsed by the Association of Jewish Libraries (AJL) =========================================================== Submissions for Ha-Safran, send to: hasaf...@osu.edu SUBscribing, SIGNOFF commands send to: Listproc @ lists.acs.ohio-state.edu Questions, problems, complaints, compliments;-) send to: galron.1 @ osu.edu Ha-Safran Archives: Current: http://www.mail-archive.com/hasafran%40lists.acs.ohio-state.edu/maillist.html History: http://www.mail-archive.com/hasafran%40lists.acs.ohio-state.edu/history.html AJL HomePage http://www.JewishLibraries.org
