[ha-Safran] Mentoring for the AJL Conference 2013 in Houston

2013-03-18 Thread Stephanie L Gross
It's that time again. Time to register for the annual AJL Convention and time
again to recruit seasoned members to meet, greet and guide newbies at this
year's conference. Modeling the concept after that of other professional
organizations such as ALA, we of AJL strive to ensure that all attending
derive the maximum benefit from their experience. By contact the Mentoring
Committee before the conference begins, mentor pairs can jump start the process
by contacting one another and reviewing the new participant's goals for the
action-packed 3-day session in Houston. If you're hesitating about the
commitment, kindly remember the adage : Mi-kol talmidai hiskalti. Both mentor
and mentee are assured to come away winners! Oh, and by the way, this pair may
continue for an academic year based on availability.

Are you a library student, recent graduate, or simply a first-timer who'd like
to give this a try? Kindly send along your contact information with goals
you'd like to achieve to Stephanie (Sara Leah) Gross: ajlmentor...@gmail.com.
Please also remember to apply for the appropriate stipends and scholarships, as
well.

Looking forward to hearing from you all soon!

[ha-Safran] Zosa Szajkowski

2013-03-18 Thread James Rosenbloom
The new issue of Jewish Social Studies (volume 8, no. 2 -- Winter 2012)
contains the article Rescue or theft? Zosa Szajkowski and the salvaging of
French Jewish history after World War II, by Lisa Moses Leff. It will
prove fascinating reading for anyone interested in the transfer and theft
of Jewish archival material from Europe to the United States, and their
purchase by Judaica libraries.

You can use the Israeli Union List:

http://libnet.ac.il/~libnet/z39.htm

There used to be a way to access NLI itself but it hasn't worked for a while.

[ha-Safran] New Picture Book by Jacqueline Woodson

2013-03-18 Thread Rachel Kamin
A new picture book Each Kindness by Jacqueline Woodson, with illustrations
by E.B. Lewis, caught my eye on the new book display at my public library. I
checked it out and I read it with my 7-year-old son. When a new girl comes
to the class she is ostracized by the other girls because of her second-hand
clothes and shoes and the strange food she brings in her lunch. Chloe goes
along with her friends and won't even smile at or speak to Maya even though
she sits in the desk right next to her. The teacher then shows the class a
large bowl filled with water. She drops a small stone in the water and
explains: This is what kindness does . . . each little thing we do goes
out, like a ripple, into the world. She has each student share something
kind they have done while dropping a stone in the water. Chloe can't think
of anything and passes the stone to the next person. Later Chloe walks home
and stops at the pond. She throws small stones in the water as she thinks
of all of the things she wishes she had said or done to show kindness
towards Maya. But, Maya has left the school and she never gets the chance.
The watercolor illustrations are beautiful and expressive and the overall
message of the book is poignant and powerful.

Obviously, this is not a Jewish book but the teacher's message, Each
kindness makes the whole world a little bit better, corresponds closely
with Jewish values. The word mitzvot could easily replace the word kindness
in the text. I'm planning to buy a copy for the synagogue's library and I
strongly recommend it for school, synagogue, and community libraries.

Happy Passover!
