[ha-Safran] AJL Conference: Twitter hashtag

2013-06-10 Thread Heidi Estrin
Earlier I sent you a message about the AJL Conference being covered live on
Facebook. I neglected to mention that we'll be using the hashtag #AJL13 in our
posts to assist Twitter users in finding us. If you are on Twitter and you want
to mention the AJL Conference, please use the hashtag #AJL13!

AJL is on Twitter: @jewishlibraries.

Thanks!

[ha-Safran] The Journals of the Haskalah 1820 to 1845 (Magnes press)

2013-06-10 Thread Celestina Levant

Hello
We would like to introduce a new book published by Magnes press:

The Journals of the Haskalah 1820 to 1845

Monographs and Annotated Indices to Eight Hebrew Periodicals In
Holland, Galicia and Lithuania

 By Moshe Pelli
http://www.magnes-press.com/Authors/Moshe+Pelli.aspx?name=Moshe+Pelli

This book follows the publication of the monographs and annotated indices on
Kerem Hemed, titled Kerem Hemed: ‘Hochmat Israel’ [The Scholarly Study of
Judaism] As the ‘New Yavneh,’ An Annotated Index to Kerem Hemed, the Hebrew
Journal of the Haskalah in Galicia and Italy (1833—1856), in 2009, and
previously on Bikurei Ha’itim, titled Bikurei Ha’itim — Bikurei Hahaskalah [The
First Fruits of Haskalah]: An Annotated Index to Bikurei Ha’itim, the Hebrew
Journal of the Haskalah in Galicia (in 2005), and the publication of Hame’asef
Index and monograph — Sha’ar Lahaskalah [The Gate to Haskalah]: An Annotated
Index to Hame’asef, the First Hebrew Periodical (1783–1811), in 2000, by Magnes
Press. Following the publication of these three books, I continued to pursue
the indexing project of early Hebrew Haskalah periodicals, researching the next
group of eight Hebrew periodicals that were published from 1820 to 1845. It
involved studying the journals and their editors, contributing authors, and the
subject matters included in them, and examining their scholarly and literary
output, and preparing the indices and monographs. … read more

Shorley and Jubb draw together informed commentaries by international experts
from all sectors and backgrounds to discuss a global approach to defining the
future of research communication. Examining the technological context, changing
research behavior and the roles and responsibilities of major stakeholders,
this volume pinpoints the key agents of change in scholarly communication.
Governments and societies around the globe agree that a vibrant and productive
research community underpins a successful knowledge economy. But the context,
mechanisms and channels of research communication are in flux. Presenting
analysis of these new trends and drivers, their implications and a future
framework, editors Shorley and Jubb draw together the informed commentary of
internationally-renowned experts from a wide variety of backgrounds to define
the future of research communication. Essential reading for all concerned with
the rapidly evolving scholarly communications landscape, including
researchers, librarians, publishers, funders, and academics, the book's key
topics include

  * Changing ways of sharing research in chemistry
  * Supporting qualitative research in the humanities and social sciences
  * Creative communication in a publish or perish culture
  *   Cybertaxonomy
  * Coping with the data deluge
  * Social media and scholarly communications
  * The changing role of the publisher in the scholarly communications process
  *   Researchers and scholarly communications
  * The changing role of the journal editor
  * The view of the research funder
  *   Changing institutional research strategies
  * The role of the research library
  *   Perspectives of library users

This volume pinpoints the key agents of change in scholarly communication.

(SLG: I'm posting this to support the lively discussions both Council as well
as other members have held regarding trends in scholarly publication. Perhaps
those who read this volume might comment on how some of the phenomena manifest
themselves in Judaica/Hebraica publishing trends.)

I agree. It's worth discussion--what is the difference between
redemption and atonement.

OK. This is how I see it (you are all invited to thresh this to chaff if
you feel the urge):

Remember the story about this guy who bends Hillel's ear on and on and
on about something he did to this other guy and how badly he feels abou
it bla de bla de bla? Hillel listens to all this blather and after
looking at his Hermione-Granger sand-watch says: Enough, already! I get
it! Now get outta here and go fix it with the guy you screwed over;
he'll get it, too... maybe... probably.. I don't know... but one thing
is cotton-picken sure, you won't know unless you schlep on over there
and give it a shot.

Atonement: The Guy was recognising his wrong-doings and spilling his
guts out to Hillel.
Redemption, from the verb to redeem: Hillel says to go fix it. Pay the
piper so to speak, shell out the ransome to put things right side up
between you and the person you trashed..

Another example might be a shot-gun wedding.
The atonement words of the young man to the father with the shot gun
are: Sir, I admit that it was I, (Atonement), and I plan on doing right
by your daughter before you, the world and God. To which the future
father-in-law lowers the barrel and says: Damn, straight. (Redemption)

Yom Kipur is the last word in Redemption/Atonement.
Take time to recognise that you're a total goof (Atonement, the whole
month of Elul)
Manage to get through 10 days of asking everybody's forgiveness and
setting things right (Redemption with a time limit)

KolNidre/Yom Kipur: convince everybody that you really mean it.

Subject: [MLA-L] New American Cantorate web site

Dear MLA-L,

I’m happy to announce a new Web site devoted to a musicological project from
the 1980’s, the History of the American Cantorate, undertaken by Mark Slobin
(Wesleyan University) and Mark Kligman (Hebrew Union College). The current
project makes use of our institutional repository, WesScholar, a Digital
Commons site, to store and disseminate documents and recordings.

We’ve made available the audio examples from Mark Slobin’s book, Chosen Voices:
The Story of the American Cantorate (University of Illinois Press, 1989), which
grew out of the project, but additionally all the audio interviews, sung
examples, and various documents and surveys that formed the raw data for the
original project are available here as well.

The main American Cantorate site is at http://cantorate.wesleyan.edu/ .

Our institutional repository page for the project is at
http://wesscholar.wesleyan.edu/cantorate/ , and there are multiple links from
the American Cantorate pages to this repository.

Please forward this announcement to interested researchers.
