[ha-Safran] FW: LAND FOR THE NOMADS - EXCITING NEW FILM ABOUT THE BEDOUINS
LAND FOR THE NOMADS A film by Lipika Pelham Documentary, 55 min. Shalom Safranim Ve'Safraniot, Basic human rights – and human interactions are at the core of this documentary. The plight of a Bedouin community in the hills outside of Jerusalem is championed by an unlikely protector in the form of Israeli attorney Shlomo Lecker. Former BBC reporter Lipika Pelham tells the story in a gentle and convincing way. As you can read in the recent review of LAND FOR THE NOMADS in EMRO http://emro.lib.buffalo.edu/emro/emroDetail.asp?Number=5161 http://emro.lib.buffalo.edu/emro/emroDetail.asp?Number=5161 The Bedouin were displaced from the southern Negev desert around 1950 shortly after the creation of Israel. In what’s seen as a gradual process since the 1970s, state-sponsored Jewish settlements mushroomed up all along the desert, limiting the Bedouins’ nomadic way of life. Shlomo Lecker is an Israeli lawyer who defies all stereotypes. He is a Jew who fights for the Arab Bedouins. He is an Israeli who challenges the Israeli judiciary. The film explores Lecker’s personal relationship with his clients – the lone Israeli who claims that he has a Bedouin soul. LAND FOR THE NOMADS observes issues that are between the personal and the national, the modern and the traditional, the exotic and the familiar, with irony and humor that make the film accessible to a wider audience. Already purchased by Harvard University, Arizona State University and Penn State, LAND FOR THE NOMADS would be a wonderful addition to your collection as well. The purchase price for university libraries is $300 + shipping and handling, and for public libraries is 115 USD + shipping and handling. I was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York and I still have my Brooklyn accent (and proud of it!). Back in the 70's there was a t-shirt that said it all: I love New York but Israel is my home. If you want to know why I made aliyah, check out the videos and articles at: http://www.jr.co.il/aliyah/why.htm Next week is Rosh Hashana, the Jewish New Year. I posted Rosh Hashana educational resources at: http://www.jr.co.il/hotsites/j-hdayrh.htm The Rosh Hashana video list now has 256 video links. I am sure it will get larger over the next week. Enjoy the videos at: http://www.jr.co.il/videos/rosh-hashana-videos.htm Enjoy the holidays and have a good year! Shana Tova! [ha-Safran] Queen of the Jews Book Tour: CA, FL, NJ, NY
Shalom Safranim, Book your calenders for the *Queen of the Jews* Book Tour. Dates are below. Queen Salome Alexandra ruled Judea (modern-day Israel) in the first century BCE. Vividly evoking scenes of ancient Jerusalem, Judy Petsonk's novel brings to life the queen's stormy relationship with her husband, and her love for the people who called her Shalom-Zion: the peace of Zion. A GRIPPING, FUN READ... Judy Petsonk's sexy heroine, Queen Salome Alexandra, possesses the brains, hutzpah, and vision to save Israel not only from its many enemies but also from its own conflicted nature. A marvelous window into a neglected and little-known chapter of Jewish history. - Ellen Frankel, Former Editor in Chief of the Jewish Publication Society CALIFORNIA Tu 10/1 6 p.m. Sinai Temple sisterhood, LA W 10/2 10:15 a.m. ORT North Country Shores San Diego Th 10/8 7 p.m. Congregation Beth Israel, Carmel W 10/9 7:30 p.m. Congregation Beth Am, LA Th 10/10 10 a.m. Stephen Wise Temple, LA Sa/Shabbat 10/12 12:30 p.m. Valley Beth Shalom, Encino M 10/14 7 p.m. Alpert JCC, Long Beach W 10/17 7 p.m. Beth El, La Jolla Su 10/20 10 a.m. Temple Israel, Long Beach NEW YORK Th 10/24 1 p.m. Scarsdale JCC Sa/Shabbat 10/26, 1:15 p.m. Bet Am Shalom, White Plains FLORIDA Sa/Shabbat 11/2 luncheon after services Beth Am, Margate W 11/6 6:30 p.m. Temple Israel Sisterhood, Tallahassee F 11/8 10 a.m.. [ha-Safran] Preserving our Past for the Future”.
*From:* Rachel Bortnick [mailto:bortnic...@sbcglobal.net] *Sent:* Tuesday, August 27, 2013 11:05 AMDear Friends, ** The Quincentennial Foundation Jewish Museum of Istanbul – Turkey is launching its new campaign: “Preserving our Past for the Future”. Our aim is to build a virtual museum/library by digitally archiving the records of the Turkish Jewish Community: photographs, video and audio recordings, documents, objects and visuals. Examples of such records could be of: - Family photographs documents, - Family gatherings, religious ceremonies, - Social gatherings, conferences, plays, musicals, shows, folk dancing and similar events by the social culture clubs As it is very important to preserve these records, our officials can present vouchers upon receipt of a record and return to the owner the original after making a digital copy. If you are willing to donate your original record (an objet, a document) to the museum, we will make certain that viewers will know it has been donated by the owner. If you already have some digital records we will be happy to receive them over the Internet, to the following address: ni...@muze500.com For more detailed information and for questions you can write to : Mrs. Nisya Allövi Tel: +90 (212) 292 63 33 - 34 Fax: +90 (212) 244 44 74 E-mail : ni...@muze500.com Address: JEWISH MUSEUM OF ISTANBUL KARAKOY MEYDANI, PERCEMLI SOK. [ha-Safran] New book - Forgotten Memories by Jimmy Peress
Hi Safranim I would like to bring to your attention my newly released book titled Forgotten Memories. The book was published in July 2013 and it is available for purchase at Amazon in a print edition as well as the Kindle edition. Book description: Everyone has a story or two to tell about his life. The author’s life includes unique circumstances of growing up in three separate countries before he even reaches his teenage years and of having an utterly devoted and close-knit family around him. And then totally unplanned events simply occurred. He did not know all that until he retired from his professional career and realized that perhaps his story is not as typical or normal as he once thought. Slowly but surely the author begins to relive it again tentatively reaching back into the distant past. The result of this search is an exhilarating journey to discover himself and reconnect with his past and roots. And in the process he also finds a voice and a knack for storytelling that combines an irreverent style with self-deprecating humor. Here they are, the “Forgotten Memories”. Share this journey with the author and enjoy the ride and the reading as much as he did. About the author: The author is a retired engineer who lives in New York City. One day he took a turn on the wild side and squeezed out an autobiography that was always inside him. He recommends to other would–be writers who dream of becoming a published author, to follow their dream. On most sunny days you can find him at Cunningham Park tennis courts in Queens. When he is not playing tennis he is busy contemplating his next writing project. Those interested in learning more about the book can read one chapter for free at Amazon.com Thank you very much __ Messages and opinions expressed on Hasafran are those of the individual author and are not necessarily endorsed by the Association of Jewish Libraries (AJL) == Submissions for Ha-Safran, send to: Hasafran@lists.service.ohio-state.edu To join Ha-Safran, update or change your subscription, etc. - click here: https://lists.service.ohio-state.edu/mailman/listinfo/hasafran Questions, problems, complaints, compliments send to: galro...@osu.edu Ha-Safran Archives: Current: http://www.mail-archive.com/hasafran%40lists.service.ohio-state.edu/maillist.html Earlier Listserver: http://www.mail-archive.com/hasafran%40lists.acs.ohio-state.edu/maillist.html AJL HomePage http://www.JewishLibraries.org -- Hasafran mailing list Hasafran@lists.service.ohio-state.edu https://lists.service.ohio-state.edu/mailman/listinfo/hasafran
