FYI, the Jewish Book Council has announced its list of 2013 winners. I thought
you all might be interested. If you received their email announcement, be
aware that the link to more info at the bottom of the message incorrectly goes
to the 2012 list of winners. The correct info for the most recent winners can
be found here:

[ha-Safran] The Angel of Jewish History (Magnes press)

2014-01-15 Thread Celestina Levant

Hello
We would like to introduce a new book published by the Hebrew University Magnes
pressin Jerusalem:

The Angel of Jewish History
http://www.magnes-press.com/Book/The+Angel+of+Jewish+History.aspx?name=The+Angel+of+Jewish+Historycode=45-321085docNo=3qid=2

The Image of the Jewish Past in the Twentieth Century

By Ronny Miron
http://www.magnes-press.com/Authors/Ronny+Miron.aspx?name=Ronny+Miron

The relationship between the traditional Jewish past and the present is a key
question in Jewish intellectual thought from the Wissenschaft des Judentums in
the nineteenth century up to the present day. The Angel of Jewish History casts
a philosophical gaze upon the relationship between the traditional Jewish past
and the present through the metaphysical worldviews of five formative Jewish
Studies scholars: Yosef Hayim Yerushalmi, Amos Funkenstein, Gershom Scholem,
Baruch Kurzweil, and Nathan Rotenstreich. Their hermeneutic worldviews and
writings deal with the nature and formation of modern Judaism, Wissenschaft des
Judentums and historicism, the image of the Jewish past and tradition,
secularization, and God’s status in present-day Jewish reality. These issues
are explored in the book against the background of the tense discourse between
the perception of modern Jewish reality as a break from the past and tradition
and the argument for continuity despite the changes and developments of
modernity.

[ha-Safran] Accelerated Reader

2014-01-15 Thread Andrea Rapp
I'm putting the labels on the books, looking up the assigned reading levels
that AR gives each book.  Freefall, by Anna Levine, grade level 3.9?
Ridiculous.  I'd give it to kids in 6th or 7th grade at minimum.  On the other
hand, The Peddler's Gift/Shnook the Peddler is 5th grade level.
I am really surprised at the level assignments to so many titles.

Subject: [ha-Safran] help with book choice

Hi.

I'm teaching an undergraduate (upper-division) course in Jewish-American
Literature this spring. I've taught this class several times before and will
be using most of the same books this time. However, I'm not thrilled with one
of the books and am looking for one to replace it. That book is Allegra
Goodman's The Family Markowitz. I use it because it fills certain needs I have
at the end of the syllabus (which is organized chronologically). It is
partially set in California; it is fairly contemporary, being set in the late
20th century; it deals with conflicting views toward Israel, and it includes
characters who are baal tshuva.

Can you think of another book that fits most if not all of these criteria? I
really want a book that is set in California, and I want to make sure the
issues of baal tshuva and American conflicts about Israel come up in one book
or another. I would consider substituting the Goodman book with two others if
I needed them both to satisfy these needs.

Here are the desired traits again:

Contemporary (21st century if possible)
California setting (for some or most if not all of the book)
Baal Tshuva characters (they do not have to be the main characters)
conflicts due to differing views of Israel

Thank you in advance for any suggestions you make.

Happy Secular New Year to everyone.

Thanks again,
June Cummins

Fortunately I never had to deal with Accelerated Reader. However, in the public school where I worked, there were some teachers and administrators who wanted to level the collection. Fortunately, we librarians were able to talk them out of that.

As both a public and school librarian, I always tried to resist specific level labels on books. Labels take away that serendipitous discovery of a book that would never be found if the child were restricted just to books on his/her level.

Personally, I feel that this leveling and categorizing movement leads to mediocrity.

We are paid for our judgement and experience with literature among other things. These canned programs take that away.

Sorry for the soapbox. It's an issue I am passionate about.
