[ha-Safran] Hidden Treasures from Europe I

2015-10-14 Thread Celestina Levant
Hello
We would like to introduce a new book published by the Mekize Nirdamim
publishing:
Hidden Treasures from Europe I
By Simcha
Emanuel

The discovery of the Cairo Geniza has transformed scholarly research in
multiple areas of Jewish Studies and revolutionized several disciplines. It has
provided the materials for thousands of studies and is by no means exhausted.
Alongside the Cairo Geniza, an additional "Geniza" is slowly emerging in
Europe, one that consists of many thousands of individual pages that were torn
from Hebrew manuscripts hundreds of years ago and subsequently used for
bookbinding and as folders for archive files. Although the first fruits of the
European Geniza appeared considerably before the discovery of its Cairo
counterpart, this "European Geniza" has not been at the center of scholarly
interest, and relatively few scholars have made use of it. However, in recent
decades thousands of new fragments have come to light, increasing the quantity
previously known to us exponentially. Read

[ha-Safran] FW: LESSONS OF SURVIVAL: CONVERSATIONS WITH SIMON WIESENTHAL

2015-10-14 Thread Ruth Diskin

LESSONS OF SURVIVAL: Conversations with Simon Wiesenthal

Now - a SPECIAL OFFER FOR LIBRARIES - $150 PURCHASE PRICE (instead of 300
USD) for universities libraries and 99 USD for public libraries.

Fighting evil and challenging immoral actions are sadly still relevant in
today's world.

In conversations with the legendary Simon Wiesenthal, Inna Rogatchi allows
us to learn from this courageous man. Over a period of time and in chain of
friendly discussions with the filmmaker, Simon Wiesenthal shares his
insights into the psychology, philosophy and sociology of the Holocaust, and
its implications to this day. The universal appeal of his message continues
to be relevant, and this film provides unique insight in the lessons of
survival and actively opposing evil.

A rare peek into important perceptions by a singular man.

You can read a nice review of this film at

[ha-Safran] Sydney Taylor Book Award Committee opening

2015-10-14 Thread Diane Rauchwerger
One position on the Sydney Taylor Book Award Committee will be available
beginning January 1, 2016.

Applicants should be members of AJL, familiar with the scope of Judaic
children’s literature, experienced in writing critical reviews, willing and
able to read and review over 120 books during the course of a year, and able to
meet deadlines.

Committee members are expected to attend annual conventions and to participate
in committee-sponsored events, including speaking at the Committee’s annual
presentation. The term of membership on the Committee is four years. Each
committee member typically receives more than $1500 in books for review, which
may be kept for personal use or added to the member’s library.

Membership on the Sydney Taylor Book Award Committee is both fun and
intellectually challenging, but it also requires a substantial commitment in
terms of time and energy.

Members must be able to submit reviews electronically and correspond with the
committee members through regular e-mail. Familiarity with Google Docs is
helpful but not required.

To apply, send a letter indicating the reasons for your interest, a resume, and
several examples of your recent reviews of Jewish children’s books to Diane
Rauchwerger, Committee Chair, at ch...@sydneytaylorbookaward.org
 or mls4...@sbcglobal.net
.

Applications will be accepted through November 30, 2015.

Sydney Taylor Book Award Committee
